Good information in a dull format 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Marion Nestle has a lot of useful and important information in this book; however, her style is very clinical and mundane. I found myself working to stay awake whenever I read the book. I did finish it, because I think it's good knowledge to have, but a better writer could have made the material pop.

The same people pushing to "empower individuals" do all they can to disempower you 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There's much to say about Nestle's "Food Politics" and "What To Eat," but the overarching message is that the food industries lie compulsively in order to maximize profits. There's no reason to assume that food-company profit maximization would lead to any desirable outcome: they will produce more food every year in the quest for profit growth, and that food will be as artificial and toxic as the laws will allow them. They will resist any food labeling that might harm their sales. This includes:

* "organic" (which implies that some foods are better than others)
* warnings about toxicity (e.g., methylmercury in tuna)
* the USDA food pyramid, which explicitly places junk food at the top and low-profit vegetables near the bottom

They offload the regulatory burden onto consumers: if you're getting fat, it's your own fault. Of course, they say this while they fight tooth and nail against any labeling requirement that might help you choose. And they fight against any regulation that might make you safer at their expense.

And of course there's the advertising. The same companies that tearfully demand your 'freedom to choose' with hand over heart are the same ones that target your children: everything from Saturday-morning cartoon ads to McDonald's sponsorship of Teletubbies to Coca-Cola branded baby bottles. In-depth psychological research understands exactly what will make your child tug at your sleeve in the grocery store and beg for the most profitable sugary cereal. So you have the 'freedom to choose', defended by companies that do all they can to deny it.

Marion Nestle's magisterial books prove these points in extraordinary detail, yet they pull off the trick with an eloquence that makes them read like novels. The basic premise, though, is beyond dispute: food companies exist to maximize shareholder return. Their investors demand growth every year. There's no reason to expect that this demand will work in your favor.

Editorial Review:

An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics laid the groundwork for today's food revolution and changed the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. Now, a new introduction and concluding chapter bring us up to date on the key events in that movement. This pathbreaking, prize-winning book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why.

Improving Communications in the Health Care encounter 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Most patients feel rushed and not heard in their encounters with health care providers. This clearly written "how to" book provides principles and examples of conversation that can improve the quality of communication around life style change between provider and patient. Listening rather than telling, and guiding rather than directing or preaching are difficult skills for health providers. Giving the patient "a voice and a choice" in making changes in their unhealthy behaviors is essential to successful outcomes. This practical guide to health behavior change has made a difference in my practice when patients give me permimssion to discuss their drinking, smoking, drug use, over eating, fitness and seat belt use with them.

Edward Bernstein, MD
Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine
Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs
Department of Emergency Medicine
Boston University School of Medicine

Editorial Review:

Much of health care today involves helping patients manage conditions whose outcomes can be greatly influenced by lifestyle or behavior change. Written specifically for health care professionals, this concise book presents powerful tools to enhance communication with patients and guide them in making choices to improve their health, from weight loss, exercise, and smoking cessation, to medication adherence and safer sex practices. Engaging dialogues and vignettes bring to life the core skills of motivational interviewing (MI) and show how to incorporate this brief evidence-based approach into any health care setting. Appendices include MI training resources and publications on specific medical conditions.

Medical Professionals Please Read This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In my health care practice, I look for the toxins that throw our bodies out of balance as Donna so aptly describes in her book. We live in a sea of chemicals and if a health practitioner chooses to go looking for them, they will find them in a patient's body. Just look around at the average American today. It is obvious the medications that simply treat symptoms are not enough.

It seems so basic to clean up our bodies, our environment. Thank you, Donna, for writing such a comprehensive, truthful book about our state of affairs in health and industry today and its impact on all of us.

Editorial Review:

From the foreword by Dr. Douglas Kerr, Director, Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center

"The Autoimmune Epidemic by Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an astounding book....It is the kind of book that will rivet you and scare you. It will make you angry. It will amaze you with the courage of some of the people described in the book...The Autoimmune Epidemic is every bit as compelling as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle...It is also every bit as necessary as An Inconvenient Truth....

You will leave this book with no reservations about the veracity of the conclusions: put simply, there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and increasing environmental exposures of toxins and chemicals is fueling this rise. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable....

Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a necessary first step. Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a life-altering event. It needs to be."

Review of the other reviews 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I had severe chronic abdominal pain for the best part of a year. I had to quit my sport (rowing) and it really affected my studies. Truth is I was already beginning to realise that my problem was somatic and had begun to release the abdominal tension just by thinking about it. I discovered somatics after that. Personally I have found it an effective approach to releasing tension. It has worked for me but what I would like to know is whether it has worked for others?

The thing about this sort of book is that it is likely to attract positive reviews. We only see the successes and the failures are forgotten about thus distorting the reviews. Indeed this is a failure of the book itself. As a practitioner of somatics Hanna must have had people he could not help. What was their situation? How long did he work with them? As such the first part of the book which discusses case studies and its philosophical basis cannot be regarded as scientific. We can learn as much from failure as from success.

The only critical review at the time of writing is right to criticise the poor visibility of the skeleton diagrams. Others have criticised its lack of mention of the fact that there are people trained in somatic education. If you decide to take on the program then I advise you to go to someone trained in the movements otherwise you risk doing it wrong and wasting your time or at worst making your problem worse.

Somatics is not an alternative to Pilates or Yoga rather it takes certain aspects of those disciplines and refines them as well as adding some additional ideas not found in either. Pilates is about core stability, yoga is about... well yoga and somatics is about muscle tension. The book also fails to adequately put itself within context of other related disciplines.

Anyway, Somatics is a great discipline. I hope that the next edition works out these criticisms.

Editorial Review:

Building on the foundation laid by Moshe Feldenkrais, Thomas Hanna’s groundbreaking work completely redefines the body’s potential for withstanding decline. His gentle program for the mind and body proves once and for all that so many problems we accept as inevitable over time—chronic stiffness, bad back, chronic pain, fatigue, and, at times, even high blood pressure—need never occur if we maintain conscious control of nerve and muscle, replacing Sensory-Motor Amnesia with Sensory-Motor Awareness. The good news of Somatic Exercise is that most people simply do not have to become captives of age or injury. Once learned, this lifelong program can help almost anyone maintain the pleasures of a supple, healthy body indefinitely, with only a five-minute routine once a day.

I dont care what nobody says but Kevin Trudeau is telling the truth 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Since I have tried some of the many things he mentions in this book I have seen a major difference in my health and vitality. It is a disgrace that how the FTC and FDA would post fraudulent comments on the internet stating that he is a scam and dear to address his past (like who have not had a bad past). Don't believe the negative post messages on the site and other internet post message sites because they are either people of government agency and pharmaceutical companiies trying to debunk or discredit him through the use of false disguises. I personally experience my weight beginning to melt and my clothes begin to fit me loosely. He is not a fraud.

Save Your Money... 2 out of 5 stars.

The book wasn't clear, concise, or to the point regarding debt--not even close! It was repetitious and quite boring to be quite honest. Having the audio format, had I heard the phrase "it's a scam", one more time, I would have flung the disc out of the window, instead...I returned it for refund--I couldn't take it any more! Remember--timely delivery, straight forward, and a less whiney approach in conveying a message,Debt Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About is what it's all about!

Editorial Review:

In the battle for U.S. health care, patients and doctors are losing. .

Who Killed Health Care? shows how to win the war. . .

One of the nation's most respected health care analysts, Regina Herzlinger exposes the motives and methods of those who have crippled America's health care system-figures in the insurance, hospital, employment, governmental, and academic sectors. She proves how our current system, which is organized around payers and providers rather than the needs of its users, is dangerously eroding patient welfare and is pushing costs out of the reach of millions.

.

Who Killed Health Care? then outlines Herzlinger's bold new plan for a consumer-driven system that will deliver affordable, high-quality care to everyone. By putting insurance money in the hands of patients, removing the middleman in the doctor-patient relationship, and giving employers cost relief, consumers and physicians will be empowered to make the system work the way it should. Herzlinger describes in precise detail how her innovative program will provide

. .
    .
  • Smaller, disease-focused medical facilities that provide complete care for patients.
  • A national system of medical records that provides privacy with confidential access by approved practitioners.
  • Mandatory performance evaluations of all hospitals and all other medical organizations.
  • Mandatory health insurance with subsidies for those who cannot afford it.
. .

Who Killed Health Care? is a call to arms that must be answered; the welfare of every American hangs in the balance.

. .

A brilliant analysis A must-read. Bill George, Professor, Harvard Business School and Former CEO of Medtronic

. .

As it becomes more and more obvious to everyone that our current health care system is unsustainable, this is the book that had to be written. Daniel H. Johnson, Jr. MD, former president of the American Medical Association

. .

Regina Herzlingers ideas to tackle the crisis of the U.S. health care system are based on keen knowledge of the systems existing difficulties along with insights that introduce the reader to new streamlined choices that have the potential of getting both quantity and cost under control. Joseph Kennedy, founder, chairman, and president, Citizens Energy Corporation, CEO, Citizens Health Care, former representative (D-Mass)

. . Regina Herzlinger offers a vision of the way things can be, should be, and will be sooner or later. The only question is: how long do we have to wait? Greg Scandlen, founder, Consumers for Health Choices

. . Regi Herzlinger has brilliantly articulated a better way embracing the principles of competition and innovation that cause every other sector of our economy to thrive. Discharging American health care from the ICU can only happen by putting individual Americans not politicians and bureaucrats back in charge of their health care decisioins. U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla), M.D.

. . Following on the heels of her landmark Market-Driven Health Care, Herzlinger lays it on the line with her expose of what many who work in the health care industry have felt in their gut. Now it is articulated in an entertaining and must-read portrayal, with you and me as the only way out. Dennis White, executive vice president for strategic development, National Business Coalition on Health

. . A wonderful Orwellian romp through issues which carry a deadly irony. The killers of health care are, of course, the third parties, each of which has an itchy palm and a commitment to profit or power which exceeds the commitment to service, with each engaging the others within a politically shaped box. Rarely has the case for the public been made with so much force, foresight, and wit, and a better way forward shown so clearly. James F. Fries, MD, Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine

. . You can practically hear the war chants as Professor Herzlinger sets out her view of whats wrong with the health care system and how to fix it. Youd best read it so you can decide which side you will be on when the battle is joined. Paul Levy, CEO, Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA

. . . . . . Regina Herzlinger, the nations leading expert on consumer-driven health care, has given us a brilliant analysis of the flaws in our health care system and what it will take to get it back on track. Her latest book is a must-read. Bill George, Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School, Former CEO, Medtronic, and author of Authentic Leadership

. . You dont have to agree with her diagnosis and prescription for the U.S. health care system, but you do have to read her book. Once again, Professor Herzlinger has put together a well researched, well written, and very provocative blueprint for the future of health care. Peter L. Slavin, MD, President, Massachusetts General Hospital

It's good for the pictures... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Since a few of the other reviews are too over-the-top to take seriously, I thought I would add my comments: It's nice 'cause it fits in your pocket, & it's nice cause it has lots of the Bates pictures in it. Unfortunately, it includes a lot of basic text at the expense of the more uncommon presentations and PE tests. I'm in the middle of my PA rotation year and I already ignore this book most of the time for that reason. If you have already memorized the more basic aspects of the larger Bates text, don't expect to reference this often. I'll repeat though - it IS nice to have the pictures...

Editorial Review:

This concise pocket-sized guide presents the classic Bates approach to physical examination and history taking in a quick-reference outline format. The book features a beautiful full-color art program and an easy-to-follow two-column format with step-by-step examination techniques on the left and abnormalities with differential diagnoses on the right. This edition's health promotion sections have been extensively updated and expanded in all chapters. Detailed information on pain assessment is now included in the general survey, vital signs, and pain chapter. A new chapter presents assessment of mental health status and behavior to encompass the psychosocial dimensions of care. A bound-in CD-ROM contains a free PDA download of head-to-toe examination.
