Easy to use without a PHD 5 out of 5 stars.

I use this book to do Medical Missionary work throughout Central America, especially Haiti, where I usually find something I've never seen before and certainly have never treated. It is very user friendly and knowledgeable.

Excellent Source Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have multiple books on infectious disease which cover the topic in great detail. These books are very useful when intricate detail is needed. However, the "Control of Communicable Diseases Manual" is a book that in its concise format is extremely valuable when you need to get a quick, yet comprehensive overview of a particular disease.

I highly recommend this volume.

Editorial Review:

The 18th edition of this text is available, for the first time, online. Translations into several languages-currently Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Serbian, Indonesian and Italian make this text a global treasure.

More riveting than The Hot Zone 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you liked The Hot Zone, you will love this book. The Hot Zone told the scary story of a variant of Ebola that turned out to be harmless to humans. The Coming Plague narrates the history of little-known but lethal diseases such as Machupo, Ebola, Four-Corners Hantavirus, Lassa Fever, Marburg and others. In each of these cases, the list of victims was relatively small, but the onset and progress of these illnesses were frightful. Garrett examines how "disease cowboys" worked backward to patient zero, followed the course of the illness, discovered its means of transmission and identified each disease. In a few cases, the original vector could not be found, despite a careful search. How even medical professionals react when they find out that they too, have the disease is a fascinating psychological study. Often they go into a state of denial, like the researcher in New York who came down with Lassa after studying some samples. At the other extreme was one doctor, who, fearing he was exposed to Ebola, hit the bottle hoping that alcohol would kill the virus. To his relief it turned out to be measles.

A large amount of this book is devoted to AIDS. Garrett details its emergence in the early 80s. She is critical of the government's slow response, which she says was partly due to the insistence of some in the Reagan administration that since it affected only homosexual men it was beneath concern. On the other hand, she suggests that the rampant promiscuity of some members of the gay community didn't help matters either. While there was enough blame to go around, the real heroes were a handful of careful physicians who noted some bizarre symptoms among their gay patients and brought this medical condition to the CDC and the world's attention. While this book presents an excellent history of the emergence of AIDS in both America and Africa, Garrett's information on AIDS is now unfortunately out-of-date.

The author presents more chapters on antibiotic-resistant TB, Legionnaire's Disease, the problem with overdosing farm animals with antibiotics and even Toxic Shock Syndrome. At one point, I bogged down with information overload. But during Garrett's chapters on hemorrhagic and other exotic fevers, this book is difficult to put down.

Editorial Review:

Based on research and interviews with experts in virology, molecular biology, disease ecology, and medicine, an exploration of our battles with microbes examines the current outbreak of infectious diseases and outlines what can be done to prevent the coming plague. 25,000 first printing. Tour.

Good Book but a bit dry 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a dry but business-like book that presents all the essentials of strategic planning for public and nonprofit organizations. The book is well organized with concepts well explained. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the practical planning techniques and processes for those working for the common good. The author correctly highlights the critical importance of the link between strategic planning and leadership. John Bryson presents a useful planning process called "the Strategy Change cycle" which is a handy model successfully used in some public and nonprofit organizations.

This is a thoughtful, useful and helpful reference and guide book for those working in government, social workers or managers in non-governmental organizations. After reading the book, you will be clear about the differences between strategic planning process in the private sector and in the public and not-for-profit organizations. You will also learn how to reduce the costs of providing services whilst improving the quality of those services.

The book is well illustrated with insightful examples which will help practitioners learn about successful strategy formulation and implementation.

Editorial Review:

Shows leaders and managers of public and nonprofit organizations both how and why they should use strategic planning to improve the performance of their organizations. This expanded edition includes many examples to illustrate both successful and unsuccessful planning efforts, while new chapters address planning implementation, strategy evaluation and reassessment, and key leadership roles vital to effective strategic planning. In addition, the author presents a planning process used successfully by many public and nonprofit organizations--the Strategy Change Cycle--along with detailed guidance on its application.

Great history of American medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

For anyone interested in the healthcare as a profession or area of study, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Despite the 20 years since its publication, Paul Starr's Pulitzer prize winner is still relevant today and in retrospect his projections made of the future of healthcare in America are surpisingly prescient.

The first book describes the development of the medical profession in early America providing a fascinating look at the social evolution of American society. The second book delineates the rise of doctors, hospitals and medical schools in latter half of the 19th to the early 20th century with the rise of science and a professional authority. The third book shifts the focus from the doctors and to the industry that medicine became as well as the various attempts at healthcare reform in response to rising healthcare costs.

My only criticism is that Starr should have devoted more pages to the root causes behind the rising healthcare costs that drove the reforms of the 1960-70s described in the third book.

Editorial Review:

Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize in American History, this is a landmark history of how the entire American health care system of doctors, hospitals, health plans, and government programs has evolved over the last two centuries.

A great book 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 43 people found this review helpful.

Too bad there are'nt more writer's of the same mind, filling in the gap between costly expertise andlayman srticture. The book is a well-balanced workbetween hand drawn illustrationsand simple, succinct text, explaining procedures for teeth cleaning, pulling, simple filling, brokenteeth, etc., to the uneducated, 3rd -worldvillage healthcare worker, anddescribes how to construct the necessary instruments and materialsout of what bits can be found at hand, for all the procedures. At one end, we pay for the dentist's scent & muzak, at the other, with this book, they discardthe intervening fluff and tripeand get something done themslves. Actually, the book deals with poorer standards than readersanywhere else would like to seeaddressed.

An excellant book for those traveling in the wilderness. 4 out of 5 stars.

Information in the book will allow the non dental care person to give emergency care to those they may come in contact with in third world countries as well as themselves or companions. This book and a small dental kit will get one through the journey and back to civilization with reduced or "cured" pain fron the dental demons.

Health Behavior & Health Education, a good buy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Good book for a class on Health Behavior and Health Education Theories. Good for graduate level work. Theories broken into chapters. Each chapter has the theory history, significant time line for the theory, chart and descriptions of the constructs, and examples where research has used the theory effectively. Examples in book make use of the theory more understandable.

Editorial Review:

Since it was first published more than a decade ago, Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and Practice has become the leading resource in the field of health promotion and education. This thoroughly revised third edition provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of health behavior theories relevant to health education and includes the most current information on developments in theory, research, and practice.
