Editorial Review:

Often described as "social phobia's cousin" and misdiagnosed as autism, selective mutism is a debilitating fear of speaking in some situations experienced by some children. The disorder usually presents in children before the age of five, but it may not be recognized until the child starts school. When requested to speak, children with selective mutism often look down, blush, or otherwise express anxiety that disrupts their engagement with people and activities. Selective mutism is related to social anxiety and social phobia, and more than 90 percent of children with selective mutism also manifest symptoms of one of these problems.

This book is the first available for parents of children with selective mutism. It offers a broad overview of the condition and reviews the diagnostic criteria for the disorder. The book details a plan you can use to coordinate professional treatment of your child’s disorder. It also explains the steps you can take on your own to encourage your child to speak comfortably in school and in his or her peer group. All of the book’s strategies employ a gradual, "stepladder" approach. The techniques gently encourage children to speak more, while at the same time helping them feel safe and supported.

Angela E. McHolm, Ph.D., is director of the Selective Mutism Service at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON. The Selective Mutism Service offers outpatient psychiatric consultation to families and professionals such as school personnel, speech and language pathologists, and mental health clinicians who support children with selective mutism. She is assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON.

Best choice for medical students who desire an introduction to Obstetrics an Gynecology. Includes guidelines for treatment. The first book at this speciallity for newcomers.

Great book for 3rd year med school 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I used this book as a supplement to my 3rd year clerkship in med school. It is not a huge text, so it was great for looking up the details that were not found in Blueprints, especially if you are interested in OB for a career. The book is well organized and is easy to read. Too much to read for board review or shelf exams, but an excellent reference book for OB/GYN.

Current OB and GYN Dx and Tmt 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a busy 4th yr resident, there is hardly any time to read the major OB/GYN textbooks. This text is a good review of major concepts in OB/GYN. It's a very easy read.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and updated, this comprehensive reference provides the latest clinically relevant information on all aspects of women's health care. New contributors offer up-to-the-minute reports on late pregnancy complications, multiple pregnancy, third-trimester hemorrhage, and infertility.

Editorial Review:

Written by a leading expert in the field, this comprehensive reference text enables users to properly screen for medical disease to make an informed diagnosis. The goal of this proven text is to teach the Physical Therapist how to determine if the patient has a true neuromuscular or musculoskeletal problem and to determine the specific dysfunction or impairment. Now with a new title that reflects a better understanding of the screening process as the first step in making a diagnosis, this text provides students, physical therapy clinicians and physical therapist assistants with a step-by-step approach to client evaluation, which follows the standards of competency established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) related to conducting a screening examination.

  • A systems-based approach to differential screening and diagnosis make it easy for Physical Therapists to find information and understand it in light of other systems issues.
  • CD-ROM with screening tools provides Physical Therapists with forms and checklists they can use in the clinical setting.
  • Case studies provide real-world examples.

  • New chapter on how physical assessment provides baseline-screening information to better explain the progression of the screening process.
  • Includes new information on musculoskeletal problems.
  • A separate chapter on pain introduces the concept of pain as a screening tool.
  • An entire section is devoted to systematic origins of pain to demonstrate how regional pain should be approached in screening for particular disorders.
  • Introductory information on the newer medical screening concepts sets the stage for how screening is presented in the rest of the book.

The clearest book on AT out there 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you are studying the Alexander Technique - whether just beginning or a more advanced student - this book is a Must! Easy to read and digest, it should be on every teacher's list. However, it is important to note that the Alexander Technique can not be learned by reading books alone. Reading this book is not a way to learn the technique. But it is a terrific supplement to private individual lessons with a good teacher!

Prevent Backaches! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Gelb writes very clearly, with good illustrations describing F. M. Alexander's technique for good body use. Many actors, singers, and dancers use this technique, and many people who suffer from joint and muscle disabilities can benefit from this book. Gelb's personal experiences help the reader to understand how to benefit from the techniques and exercises he describes.

Clear, Informative, Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I started practicing the Alexander Technique over the last couple months. My teacher "assigned" me this book to read, as part of our work together. It's an outstanding book. It's very clear and easy to read. Gelb offers many anecdotal stories and quotes and other stuff like that to make it more enjoyable and inspiring. He tells the fascinating story of how Dr. Alexander developed the technique. Then he proceeds to give a clear and practical explanation of all the different aspects of the technique. I learned a lot!

Editorial Review:

This new, fully revised and updated edition confirms Body Learning's status as the classic work on the Alexander Technique for maintaining the health and efficiency of the body.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology 5 out of 5 stars.
100 of 103 people found this review helpful.

Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Editorial Review:

Applied kinesiology uses diagnostic muscle tests in conjunction with standard examination procedures to determine the causes of health problems. Written for professionals and nonprofessionals alike, Applied Kinesiology includes 32 muscle tests and a step-by-step guide for applying specific correction techniques.

As a specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy, i found this book extremely refreshing. Finally, a text that offers a non-dogmatic review of manual therapy and evidenced based physical therapy. I greatly enjoyed having the a specificity and sensitivity of most ortho special tests collected in one book. Moreover, i found the manual therapy techniques easy to understand and apply in clinic. I highly recommend this book to all who aspire to succeed in the ortho physical therapy arena!

Editorial Review:

Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects

For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.

Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. The Omega-3 Connection provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including

  • Which omega-3-rich foods to eat

  • The most effective over-the-counter supplements

  • How to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans

  • Simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, and more

Maybe it's just me 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I really didn't like this book, and I'm not sure if it is just the topic that I struggled with or if it was the text. I had a tough time reading the book...I didn't like the blank lines to fill in the answers, it seemed distracting to me trying to learn the information and having to stop and fill in the blank as I go along.
As far as the information, it was really very compelete and there were A LOT of practice strips in the text. That part I did find useful. It does take a lot of practice in class, in the field and in clinical settings to learn the cardiolody and ekg intrepretaion. If you can get passed the fill in the blanks part, or if that doesn't bother you than it seems to be a very good book. It just didn't seem to suit my learning style.

Editorial Review:

Newly revised edition of a BEST-SELLING EKG book! Revised and updated to include topics such as the use of pacemakers and implanted defibrillators. A FREE in-book CD will give users an opportunity to practice in an interactive and fun environment. Appropriate for any student or practicing health care provider who needs to learn or review basic EKG or arrhythmia concepts.

Great book...I think 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I just thought I'd let future customers know that this book has some of the same questions as the second edition, not all though, so I think it's worth the investment. I have both and have found both to be helpful. I haven't used the CDs because I acquired the books from friends who lost the CDs, but the books are great. I haven't taken the test yet, but highly recommend these books from my experience so far.

Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.

Just took my exam a month ago and this was then only book I purchased. I would recommend this book to anyone who is preparing for the NBCOT exam. The CD in the back of the book is nice to have, but I found the book itself to work better.

Editorial Review:

Tell your students to prepare for the computerized NBCOT OTR exam with the book that comes with a money-back guarantee that they will pass the test! Over 1,000 review questions in five practice examinations help identify areas of weakness and improve students' test taking performance. The questions help them become familiar with the format of the questions in the actual examination.

How one simple nutrient can prevent, treat, and help to reverse high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

This important book brings to light an often overlooked but central factor in some of the most prevalent and serious disorders that affect Americans today: magnesium deficiency. Written by a medical doctor and researcher who is considered to be the world's leading expert on the actions and uses of this vital mineral, The Magnesium Factor explains how magnesium deficiencies develop, why they are so widespread, and how they translate into metabolic disruptions that ultimately threaten the health of virtually every bodily system. The author then details how to determine whether you have, or are at risk for, this problem-and what you can do about it.

Backed by the latest scientific research, yet written in a clear, accessible style, here is the authoritative source for information on a topic of critical interest for all health-conscious individuals.
