No answer explanations! 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am really distracted by this - I have the current (eighth) edition and it says on the back and on the description here that the end of chapter questions have full explanations for all answer choices, which I value. Yet the appendix at the back is just an answer key with no explanations at all, just letters. This is really distracting to me, I keep thinking they must be somewhere! But it's not that big of a book. They totally aren't there, they aren't anywhere - it makes me not trust anything this book says, if they're going to screw that up so blatantly.

Too complex 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I got this book free from a friend. This book was too complex for me in med school and is still too complex for me as an intern interested in Pulm Medicine. Stick with your school's curriculum to understand the concepts as best you can, like I did. I read reviews for another book entitled Respiratory Physiology: A Clinical Approach (Integrated Physiology) by a different author. I was so impressed by 10 5-star ratings for this book, I decided to purchase it now to regain better insight into pulm physiology. I wish I came across this book while in school. I'm purchasing it today, will go through it this June, and write a thorough review for it. As for John West's book on pulm physiology, save your money.

NPR 5th edition 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The new NPR 5th edition is an excellent resource for anyone needing to prepare for certification for NPR (i.e. ob/neonatal nurses, OB's, pediatricians, perinatologists, etc)

It is easy to read, has repitition that allows reinforcement of principles learned throughout the text. Quizzes appear throughout to assist in retention and integration of information.

The DVD-ROM included in the book is improved over the last one. For the visual learner, this is most helpful. The DVD-ROM includes, computer generated images, scenarios, and the book quizzes as well. An excellent adjunct to the book, that can be used as a stand-alone review.

There are a few discrepancies between the book and the DVD-ROM, but overall the set together is worth the price.

There is also the availability to take the NPR written examination on-line and then locate an instructor to complete the practical sessions. This is helpful for any busy practitioner when needing to schedule this exam, since the written component has close to 100 questions.

Editorial Review:

The new fifth edition provides students with a complete self-study program, including case scenarios for each major resuscitation technique; Medication Performance Checklist; required megacode; review modules, and more. Also, included with the text is the new interactive DVD, which includes video of actual resuscitations, laryngoscopic camera footage, interactive scenarios, plus 3-D demonstrations and other visuals not found in the book.

MUCH BETTER THAN WEST'S 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great pulmonary physiology text that exceeds the commonly used text West text in both content and teaching. This text brings the concepts together whereas the text by John West often leaves key connections out.

Sloppy and convoluted 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I had to use this book because it was required for the physiology course I took, and the test questions were taken from it. However, it is the most sloppy textbook I have ever dealt with. It is so cryptical and convoluted, it actually makes the material HARDER to learn. (For example, bizarre acronyms are introduced in the answers to sample problems that are never even been discussed in the text itself.) The different sections of the book refer you back and forth to one another without explaining anything in a basic way. In addition, the index is terrible, so you can't even try to dope things out on your own. I would advise you to not get this book if you can avoid it, especially if you are a student trying to learn this material for the first time.

Editorial Review:

Learn and understand essential concepts rather than just memorize facts

Concise, yet complete, Pulmonary Physiology 7e provides students with a solid background in the areas of pulmonary physiology essential for an understanding of clinical medicine. The figures, key concepts, tables, and appendices summarize the material in the book and provide an outstanding review for the USMLE Step 1.

Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-PN 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Not only does this book help you with the review for the n-clex, it is invaluable to you while you are still in the nursing program. Many times the questions in the book were very similar to test questions in my classes. This book gets you in the critical thinking mode. Also it explains the answers as well as why the other choices are incorrect. My study group swears by this book.

Excellent Book for PN Students 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is a very thorough book full of NCLEX questions for the PN student. You will be fully prepared when taking board exams. I found it to have a variety of difficulties in questions, ranging from easy to extremely hard, but that's what is needed to pass the board exam. I very highly recommend purchasing this book if you want to be ready to pass the boards.

Content is Worth The Price! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

One of the few NCLEX-PN review books that goes above and beyond for studying for the boards. I used this book to study for my finals in Maternal-Child and received one of the highest scores in that class. Other than using Del Mar's Publishing NCLEX-PN review CD, ATI Books (which you can't buy online at any bookstore but at ATI) and this book, you can't beat the value or the incredible content! I even used the older edition to pass the 2006 boards! Buy it used, doesn't matter what it looks like--it's the content that's precious!

Old School 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains the information needed by anyone who want to be a quality Respiratory Care Practitioner. I spent several years gathering this information in a hand written pocket notebook and I still did not have the scope and breadth of this pocket tome.

If you want to be good you need this book.

This book is EXCELLANT!! It is very easy to read & contains a complete, condensed "stock-pile" of the basics of Respiratory Therapy. It's great!! I recently returned to the Respiratory workforce, after taking a "sabatical" of approximately 8 years. This little book helped me to review what I needed to function in the field of RT. It's nice & compact for easy carrying and has valuable info needed to complete a days work!!

Editorial Review:

HOPE FOR MANY "HOPELESS" DISEASES, FROM ONE OF THE FOREMOST RESEARCHERS IN THE FIELD

When Randy McCloy, Jr., the sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster, finally walked out of the hospital to rejoin his family, it was in part due to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is based on an almost laughably simple idea: Oxygen can be used therapeutically for a wide range of conditions where tissues have been damaged by oxygen deprivation. Restore that oxygen, goes the logical thinking, and you can restore much of the lost function. It seems too good to be true, but Dr. Paul G. Harch’s research and clinical practice has shown that this noninvasive and painless treatment can help the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from a brain injury or disease, such as:

• Stroke
• Autism and other learning disabilities
• Cerebral palsy and other birth injuries
• Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and other degenerative neurological diseases
• Emergency situations requiring resuscitation, such as cardiac arrest, carbon monoxide poisoning, or near drowning

It can also improve conditions in which inflammation is the culprit, such as arthritis and asthma; promote healing in infections, burns, and skin grafts, such as diabetic foot wounds; and slow the aging process.

For the millions of Americans suffering from these seemingly “hopeless” diseases, here finally is the handbook of hope. Inspiring and informative,
The Oxygen Revolution is the definitive guide to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, from a pioneer in the field.

worth every penny 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

It's a little black 6-ring binder, a little awkward in the pocket but still sits with you. Nothing specific to certain brand-names of ventilators but includes everything else including basic parameter interphasing, waveforms, management, and some fluffy-out-there stuff like liquid ventilation with perfluorocarbon, high-frequency ventilation, ILV and ECMO.

Bring it with you on your ICU rotation and never be caught with your pants down. For the price you'll pay, it's three giant textbooks condensed into one no-B.S. quick-reference.

Editorial Review:

Effectively managing a ventilator today is a highly-specialized procedure requiring art, science, and highly specialized tools. Oakes' Ventilator Management is THE critical care tool clinicians throughout the world keep in their lab coat pocket. Not only is this is a mandatory text for many students - an essential tool in the classroom and during clinicals but also an essential reference for the bedside professional to ensure delivery of the latest evidence-based guidelines for patient-ventilator management. Contents include ALL national standards and guidelines (ACCP weaning guidelines, AARC CPGs, COPD GOLD standards, NIH asthma guidelines, etc), ventilator needs and indications, 24 modes of ventilation, 50 pages of graphics (waveform analysis made easy), equations, assessment, troubleshooting, and much more.

This book is really helpful if you're just starting out in Respiratory Therapy, the illusrations are great. The book is easy to read and understand. Great reference book. There are charts and quick references you can either cut out of the book or photo copy and have as a handy pocket guide.

Worth the expense 4 out of 5 stars.

This is not a very expensive text book for it's category. All the same it is a well written book by a reputable author and staff. The book demands that you pay full attention to every word in it's text. I mean that the text is written in a concise manner by a professional for the novice. Attention to detail is of utmost importance when you are studying. A solid basic knowledge of first year anatomy and physiology is essential. It wouldn't hurt to have your A&P text beside you. The author assumes that the student knows the basics and does not go into basic discussions but builds on each topic. Understand that this is a challenging text book pulling together all facets of A&P with full emphasis on Respiratory Care.
I personally find this text book a pleasant challenge. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal here is to be capable of keeping someone breathing. After all if you can't breath nothing else matters!

Editorial Review:

This innovative, best-selling book provides the most complete and accurate information about the structure and function of the respiratory system. The relevance to respiratory care practice clearly sets this resource apart, with clinical scenarios to challenge your application of principles and formulas as well as numerous illustrations of common pathological conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, and asthma.

Big Heavy Book Full of Info... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you were to add a chapter on anything that may be perceived as missing, you will turn this already massive chunk of wood into something the size of a CPU. I already hate lugging it around. The only way to improve on the size is to split the material into sections sell it as a similarly priced hard or soft cover set. Then we can add the chapter on TB, sure. Knowing my instructors they'd all be coming to class every day anyways. My only complaint is the weight.

The content is direct, concise, not overly boring, understandable even when this was new and after a couple of years, I'm glad I have the reference still. The order and organization is not what I would have chosen. I knew people who cut the thing up in sections and carried chapters/sections around in report folders... It is BIG. But it is the best. The only other basic reference/text on the subject out there that even compares is Kacmarek's Essentials, it's smaller... LOL. Kacmarek is actually co-writer of the new 2008 Egans.

I would definitely be interested in any new publications by these authors solely on manifestation/process of respiratory disease. That has potential!

Thanks for reading my review!
