Just read it! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book completely changed my view about osteopenia and osteoporosis. Please, read it, specially if you're diagnosed osteopenia. I'm a very healthy woman and didn't have the habit or the necessity of taking any drugs since I discovered I have osteopenia. The doctor prescribed me Fosamax in order to try to avoid early osteoporosis. For the first time in my life I was taking a "serious" drug. I started to get fatter and fatter in my belly region. And then I read this book! It was my salvation and I'm back to normal healthy life.

Editorial Review:

"Gill Sanson's book is a well-researched breath of fresh air that will help women everywhere better trust the wisdom of their bodies." -- Christiane Northrup, M.D.

The Myth of Osteoporosis is a research-based work that provides clear insight into the myths of osteoporosis. These myths motivate both patient and physician into a lifetime of unnecessary testing and drug therapy — therapy that can in fact be life-threatening. Gillian Sanson's well-documented explanation of these myths can spare women great anxiety. She takes the fear out of aging and restores women's sense of control over their bodies. She gives women good reasons for challenging the common way that osteoporosis is handled in the United States and in many other industrialized nations.

CranioSacral Therapy is great! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is very difficult to read, but it is full of amazing information. I read it to prepare for a 4-day workshop on CranioSacral Therapy from The Upledger Institute. I had to read the book before the class, and again after the class. It made much more sense the second time.

I was a little skeptical at first, but I decided to give the therapy a try. I'm very glad I did, too. My son had been diagnosed with PDD (autism) and bipolar disorder before I took the class. After a couple of years of using CranioSacral Therapy (and a few other things), he now has ADD. He no longer takes the bipolar medication, and people who know him would never suspect PDD.

It has been A LOT of work, but it's worth every minute of it!

Editorial Review:

Craniosacral Therapy is the most practical, comprehensive textbook in this rapidly growing field of therapy involving the cranial bones, meningeal membranes, cerebrospinal fluids, and whole-body connective tissues. Craniosacral Therapy defines the physiology and anatomy of the craniosacral system, its function in health, and relationship to disease processes. It provides practical instruction in developing and extending palpatory skills which will greatly benefit all forms of manipulation, as well as basic physical diagnosis.

Two hundred drawings and photographs illustrate the mechanisms underlying the craniosacral system, and vividly demonstrate how to perform craniosacral techniques in the clinic.

If you're new to the topic of osteoporosis, this looks like a good starting point. But if you've been staying up-to-date by reading articles and talking to health professionals and people who've been diagnosed, you'll already know most of what's in this book.

I am one of those many young (-ish...44) women
who appear to be in good shape but
walk around with osteopenia and most of the
risk factors for osteoporosis. This book was
written in simple-to-understand English, based
on sound modern research. It gave me a place to
start my quest to get stronger. I am buying it
for many of my girlfriends.

Good News Bad News 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book has useful information for learning material that you will need to know in the classroom on on your boards.

That said, this book is riddled with errors. You have to be careful what you read, because there are typos on nearly every page.

The questions at the end of each chapter are moderately useful in asking about what you just read. However, the question blocks at the end of the book are atrociously bad. Many of the questions test your knowledge of concepts not presented in the book, so I suppose you can approach them as another learning opportunity, but as a question format they're not very helpful.

One example:
Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias that have been associated with hypersympathetic activity are most likely to arise from:
A. Right sided sympathetic fibers originating from T1-T4
B. Left sided sympathetic fibers originating from T2-T5
C. Left vagus nerve
(D and E are obviously wrong)

If you committed to memory the chart on page 104 (as you are supposed to for boards, see below) you will remember that the spinal cord level associated with the heart is T1-T5. There are 2 answer choices that fit that answer, and choice C is wrong because the vagus does parasympathetics. So you may be inclined to put B since the heart is, after all, on the left side. Well, you would be wrong, according to Savarese, as he explains in the answer explanation:

"Fibers originating on the right innervate the right heart and sinoatrial (SA) node...Left sided sympathetic fibers innervate the AV node." So the answer is A.

Very cute, but why didn't he include that information in the original text? He doesn't. Many of the questions end up this way, making for a frustrating exercise.

The one most important thing in this book, as regards to the board exams, is the chart on page 104 showing segmental sympathetic innervations. Since this chart is easily obtained from somewhere else, the value of buying this book is questionable at best. I suppose, looking back, that it might be worth it to get the book, if only just.

One thing going for this book is that it is a quick read; you can go through the whole thing at an easy pace in less than a week. Just heed my warnings about typos, errors, and the question blocks at the end are of dubious relevance.

Editorial Review:

The Guide to EKG Interpretation is designed as a practical guide for primary care physicians, students, nurses, physician’s assistants, and anyone else who interprets electrocardiograms as part of his or her practice. Unlike most other textbooks used to identify and interpret EKG tracings, The Guide to EKG Interpretation is designed to function in a dual role. If the reader wishes to look up bundle-branch blocks, there is a reference section discussing this abnormality in detail. If, however, the clinician notices only that there is QRS widening on the EKG, the problem-solving section of the handbook will help lead the clinician to that abnormality. This combination of functions and a convenient pocket size make The Guide to EKG Interpretation a useful pocket companion for the busy clinician or student. Based on a prototype and revised according to surveyed use, The Guide to EKG Interpretation is the first in a series of White Coat Pocket Guides, designed for practitioners in the field, and published in collaboration with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Editorial Review:

According to conventional wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable part of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do develop osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of commonsense advice, dietary info, targeted exercise, and tips on useful supplements. According to the author, sufferers can often entirely avoid the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery — approaches that, when necessary, can be used as an opportunity to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease’s progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer’s or physical therapist’s supervision. Nutritional and supplement strategies — including glucosamine and fish oil — are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.

A Grounded Vision 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 23 people found this review helpful.

As a computer systems architect and engineer with a strong knowledge base in the sciences, I tend to find most books that attempt to deal with metaphysical or esoteric topics shallow, inaccurate, and annoying.

What a pleasure, by contrast, to read Dr.Gintis's excellent, knowledgeable, and grounded vision of the continuum of body-mind-spirit!

Also, by contrast to the dry academic tomes with which I am all too familiar, this is a book that allows me to participate in the author's life, vision, and healing process. I find that reading it stimulates me, not only to new thoughts, but also to new ways of experiencing my embodiedness.

Editorial Review:

Engaging the Movement of Life is an invitation to discover new ways to experience health and embodiment. Osteopathic physician and Continuum Movement teacher Bonnie Gintis offers an approach that encompasses fluid movement, open attention, and awareness of sensation and breath as empowering practices to enrich all aspects of life. She presents a philosophy in which the body is a portal to “something greater”—an opportunity to join a grand experiment in deepening consciousness and connectedness.

Moving fluidly increases our vitality, just as water in the natural world is vitalized by flowing freely. Chronicling a path that encompasses views of body, mind, and spirit as a self-healing intercommunicating whole, Engaging the Movement of Life is equally useful for medical professionals, bodyworkers, exercise enthusiasts, and spiritual seekers.

okay, but you should really wait for the next edition 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

i'm a second-year D.O. student right now, and we were required to purchase this (very overpriced) book for our OMT class.

it's nice to have a full-color atlas of techniques, but the pros of this book stop there.

in nearly every lab, we are told about another omission or typographical error. not all of the techniques that we are required to learn are in the book. to make it even more confusing, the techniques are organized by type instead of region. this makes no sense since the labs are taught by region. it's much easier to understand the progression from a muscle energy technique to an HVLA technique if you don't have to flip 60-some pages and try to find the next technique. also, some of the explanations of the techniques are a bit confusing.

finally, there is no explanation for how the techniques work. there is a little blurb at the beginning of each chapter to explain some basic principles of the type of technique (e.g. for muscle energy, PIR vs reciprocal inhibition), but it would be much more helpful to explain with each technique exactly HOW it is improving the dysfunction (i.e., which m muscles or joints are being engaged)

this book has the potential to be good, but it needs to go through a few revisions first.

Editorial Review:

Atlas of Osteopathic Techniques is the only comprehensive full-color atlas of osteopathic manipulative techniques currently available. Richly illustrated with over 1,300 full-color photographs professionally shot for this atlas, this comprehensive, practical reference provides step-by-step instructions for 368 osteopathic manipulative techniques. Primary and secondary indications, relative and absolute contraindications, and general considerations are also discussed in well-organized textual sections preceding each technique. The fully searchable online text will be available on thePoint.

Editorial Review:

Overcoming suspicion, ridicule, and outright opposition from the American Medical Association, the osteopathic medical profession today serves the health needs of more than thirty million Americans. The DOs chronicles the development of this controversial medical movement from the nineteenth century to the present. Historian Norman Gevitz describes the philosophy and practice of osteopathy, as well as its impact on medical care. From the theories underlying the use of spinal manipulation developed by osteopathy's founder, Andrew Taylor Still, Gevitz traces the movement's early success, despite attacks from the orthodox medical community, and details the internal struggles to broaden osteopathy's scope to include the full range of pharmaceuticals and surgery. He also recounts the efforts of osteopathic colleges to achieve parity with institutions granting M.D. degrees and looks at the continuing effort by osteopathic physicians and surgeons to achieve greater recognition and visibility.

In print continuously since 1982, The DOs has now been thoroughly updated and expanded to include two new chapters addressing recent and current challenges and to bring the history of the profession up to the beginning of the new millennium.
