Good for class- too long for the Boards 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

If you are a starting MS1 this is a good book to use for class as it has alot of good detail condensed in an outline format. It comes with a CD that has been quite helpful. However, when it comes to the Boards is just too big of a book for a subject that is not high yield- think about it- this book is just as big as BRS Path. Do you really have that much time to read a low yield subject? No. So instead for Histo- I recommend using a smaller book to review for the boards: I recommed Road Maps: Histo as opposed to High Yield Histo.

Editorial Review:

This Fifth Edition continues the BRS tradition of an outline-format review for USMLE and course exams, with review questions at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive USMLE-format examination at the end of the book. Each chapter also features a high-yield section on clinical correlations. The book is concise and well illustrated, with line drawings and electron micrographs. This edition features updated content, additional electron micrographs, new conceptual line drawings, and review questions in current USMLE format. Additional multiple-choice questions, photomicrographs, and electron micrographs for further review will be available online at thePoint.

The best Histology book that I've found. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

Editorial Review:

Now it its Fifth Edition, this best-selling text and atlas is the perfect text for medical, health professions, and undergraduate biology students. It combines a detailed textbook that emphasizes clinical and functional correlates of histology with a beautifully illustrated atlas featuring full-color digital micrographs of the highest quality. This edition includes over 100 new illustrations, more Clinical Correlation boxes on the histology of common medical conditions, and new information on the molecular biology of endothelial cell function. Terminology throughout the text is consistent with Terminologia Anatomica. A powerful interactive histology atlas CD-ROM for students is included with the book and features all of the plates found in the text with interactive functionality.

Very helpful with great pictures. This book simplifies the material even for those that have never taken a course in histology. Great investment since many universities as well as medical and dental schools use this book.

Easy to read, interesting, good tables and charts, to the point, reader friendly.

Lack of communication and shipped exactly on due date 3 out of 5 stars.

The book came in good conditions as expected, but although I was writing the seller to ask whether the book was sent, I NEVER got a reply...I received the book by the due date, meaning that I paid for a faster shipping thinking that I would get my book faster, and yet it took as long as ground shipping.

Editorial Review:

Now completely revised and updated, this ground-breaking text focuses on the borderland between histology and pathology. The text describes human histology and its variations, with emphasis on avoiding overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of normal variants. Presented by leading international specialists in pathology, histopathology, anatomical pathology, surgical pathology, and neuropathology, the text is innovative, well organized and generously illustrated. Coverage includes the structure, composition, and function of tissues from a pathologic perspective; a systematic review of each major organ system, as well as structures of special significance; and histologic subtleties, such as unusual variations in staining reactions, little-known fixation artifacts, and frequently missed gross observations. This edition is reorganized to better reflect an organ-system approach to histology. Immunohistochemical findings in normal tissues have been added, based on the latest antibody panels. A bound-in CD-ROM image bank is included.

Good boards review 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My medical school mol and cell bio courses didn't emphasize the same concepts that I think the boards (Step I) cares about. I'm not sure this book is totally worth $30, but the section about mol and cell bio in First Aid was sparse (especially about diseases). A lot of these diseases come up again in organ system pathology. Nevertheless, I thought it was a nice to approach medical conditions from the angle of molecular biology. For example, it's a good review excercise to look at all the different kinds of cellular receptors and get clinical highlights (ie: associated pharmacology or diseases). I basically used it as a quick read, and I will review the sections that I am weaker at in more detail. "Upperclassmen" have stated that the boards tends to emphasize receptors and signalling pathways, and I found this book to be a good resource for those topics.

As far as learning actual mol/cell bio - this is a typical HighYield book - no frills, outline format. I think it'd be really advantageous to have familiarity with all the basic concepts before using this book. For example, it's not a good place to learn how meiosis works.

By the way, the binding is terrible. My book fell apart after I used it for less than a week (granted it was super-intense all day studying, but still!)

Editorial Review:

This completely revised and updated review book consolidates the most important clinical issues that medical students need to know to be prepared for questions on USMLE Step 1. The book reviews key cell biology concepts needed to study molecular biology, and reviews the key concepts of molecular biology necessary for clinical medical practice. Flow charts provide a clear overview of molecular biology techniques and how they are applied in medicine. A chapter on understanding the research literature provides a solid background in molecular biology protocol so that students can understand the purpose and thinking behind published research articles.

Editorial Review:

The workings of the suitable environment for cells—called the extracellular matrix (ECM) and ground regulation—has occupied the European medical tradition since the early part of the 20th century. As it has become more clear that the origin of disease and its first signals register in the connective tissue, or myofascia, cellular pathologists and biochemists have sought to circumscribe networks of cell communication and microcirculation in the ECM.

Alfred Pischinger (1899-1982) continued this line of work by further studying, in work published from 1926 through the late seventies, the connections of the ECM to the hormonal and autonomic systems. In the last twenty years Professor and Doctor of Natural Sciences Hartmut Heine and his colleagues have carried on Pischinger’s work, here summarized in one volume. Part One encompasses theoretical underpinnings; Parts Two and Three address applications and directions for further research.

This updated English-language translation not only is an account of the work of Pischinger’s successors—Heine, Otto Bergsmann, and Felix Perger, (the three editors of this volume) and their many colleagues—but notes the positive development of complementary therapies based on this understanding of histology. Acupuncture is referenced directly. Both in Europe and the States the work of manual therapists, including Rolfers, cranio- sacral therapists, and other somatic disciplines have been informed for many years by Pischinger’s outsider model of how changes in the EMC register in the central nervous system and the brain, and are conveyed back to the periphery and connected organs. Heine’s exciting recent work shows that the regulation and construction of the ECM have relationships to cybernetic non-linear systems and phase transitions.
