Still the Best Basic Text 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Over the years I have purchased many editions of this classic text and have never been disappointed. Years ago I sat in Dr. Katzung's classes when he was a young man (and I was younger!) This book is invaluable because of its varied content--1. background physiology which is so important when one needs to review and keep up-to-date on new developments, 2. comparisons of chemical structures as new products come onto the market and 3. summary tables showing the different characteristics of the various drugs in any drug group and classification. This is the one clinical pharmacology text I wouldn't be without.

A tough read 3 out of 5 stars.

This is one of those books where you have to read a paragraph again and again to actually get what it's saying. It's got great topics, if you can sift through the words! I don't love the writing style.

Editorial Review:

This best selling book delivers the most current, complete, and authoritative pharmacology information to students and practitioners. All sections are updated with new drug information and references. New! Many new figures and diagrams, along with boxes of highlighted material explaining the "how and why" behind the facts.

Very good, if used correctly 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I'm a surgical intern about to take the ABSITE for the first time in a few short weeks. I have been carrying the 2nd edition of Fiser with me everywhere I go for the last 2 months or so. It is great for those 5 minute downtimes while waiting for room turnover or while the MVC is in the scanner. The new edition is easier on the eyes with the color images (yay pictures!). While there may still be small errors, for the most part this book gives you great, concise, important information on the major areas of Gen. Surgery. One good strategy is to read a chapter in your main text, then read the corresponding chapter in Fiser during downtime the next day or two, then do questions on the subject.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Second Edition, The ABSITE Review is one of the most popular study guides for the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE), which residents in general surgery must take each year and residents going into surgical subspecialties must take during the year of their general surgery training. This easy-to-use book presents concise, digestible chunks of information in lists and outlines that facilitate quick memorization. Every component of the exam is covered--basic science and clinical knowledge in all areas tested. This edition incorporates common decision-making algorithms and covers the material that has appeared in the most recent exams.

Get ready for straight bullet point details. 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very intense. For those of you familiar with the BRS series the golden books of the series include physiology and pathology. These books are very well written and easy to understand. This is in direct contrast to what this book is. I would compare it to the BRS neuroanatomy. These books are extremely long and very detailed! Much too long for a quick board review book, so don't be deceived by the title. I cannot over emphasize enough how weighed down in detailed these books are. Although high yield facts are present in the books, they are mixed in with very low yield subjects and this makes it difficult to discern what the most important things to remember are. In other words, reading this book is not going to be pleasant. After reading the BRS neuroanatomy multiple times, I feel like throwing up every time I consider that I might read it again to refresh. This book gives me the exact same feelings. You are hardly reading anything. It is just fact after fact given in bullet point format with no flow between information, making 100% recall almost impossible even after reading each chapter 3 times (unless of course you have idiot savant capabilities). You will definitely understand anatomy more fully by memorizing this book, but be prepared to make a major investment of time and effort. As an alternative, take a look at high yield and USMLE road maps.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Sixth Edition, BRS Gross Anatomy is a primary course review and textbook for medical students in first-year anatomy courses. Written in concise, bulleted outline format, this text offers USMLE-style questions with answers and explanations at the end of each chapter and in an end-of-book comprehensive exam. Other features include nearly 150 two-color illustrations, 50 radiologic clinical images, Clinical Correlations boxes, end-of-chapter summaries, and muscle tables. New to this edition are highlighted "Development Checks" sections on embryology. Terminology has been updated to conform to Terminologia Anatomica. The fully searchable text and a question bank will be available online at thePoint.

PANCE 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is all I used to study for the PANCE and it was worth every penny. I read several reviews that were not recommending this book but I strongly disagree. I paid a lot of money and attended a course in Chicago and I actually got more from reading this book. To be honest I read the book before I attended the review and learned nothing new at the review. Save your money on the course and buy this book.

Editorial Review:

Developed and endorsed by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), this comprehensive review book offers the most thorough preparation for the NCCPA examinations. The book features review material, test questions, and detailed explanations covering the critical content areas on the certification (PANCE) and recertification (PANRE and Pathway II) examinations. This Third Edition includes thoroughly updated content, new test questions, and new chapters on geriatrics, pediatrics, and surgery. A 300-question pre-test and a 300-question post-test which simulate the NCCPA exams and incorporate the PAEA's GRADRAT self-assessment exam are provided both on a bound-in CD-ROM and online at thePoint.

Excellent. Do be fooled by other texts, this rocks!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

First of all, if you consider yourself a 'pre-med' and serious about the MCAT, then as such you probably would've done some research about your products you are using... judging from the other reviews, they have not.

These texts are for reviewing the SUBJECTS specifically... NOT for the MCAT!!! There designed to fill in the gaps you may have missed that some teachers 'leave out' during your education.

If you want reviews specifically for the MCAT, and you are already a master of all the subjects covered, then get the Examkrackers Complete Study Package here on Amazon.

The 1001 and 101 question series by Examkrackers is a great SUBJECT review for any student, premed or not. They explain difficult concepts in simple terms. Thanks EK!

Editorial Review:

1001 Questions in MCAT Chemistry provides practice questions in all chemistry topics covered by the MCAT. The questions and explanations are designed to teach the student to think intuitively. Like the MCAT, conceptual thinking is encouraged while lengthy calculations are discouraged. Memorization of basic formulas is required, but usually will not, in itself, provide the fastest method to finding an answer. Questions are conveniently arranged by topic. Question difficulty ranges from easy to very difficult. Questions are formatted exactly like the MCAT. Answers and explanations are provided in the back of the book.

This book is awesome 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone should buy this. It's way better than Netter's and is great to review before and after a gross anatomy lab.

Best Study Aid Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it for any anatomy student with lab practicals. Rather than having to find a partner, drive to the school, and sit in the lab with a bone box, I was able to study by myself in my own living room. I would not be without it!

A class above others 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this in medical school and it saved me. The dissections are amazing quality and are truly a form of art in themselves. I sold it off as a poor medical student but now that I am an attending ObGyn will be buying it again to teach my residents anatomical landmarks. If you use this for med school hold on to it for your clerkships - review relevant anatomy before every surgical rotation and use this book to help. You will find yourself coming to this again and again.

Editorial Review:

This atlas includes full-color photographs of actual cadaver dissections instead of idealized illustrations, to accurately and realistically represent anatomical structures. Often used by students as an alternative or supplement to their lab experience, and as an introduction to exactly what they should see before they dissect, as well as a study aid before practical/identification exams.

Review of Examkrackers 1001 Questions in MCAT Physics by Jonathan Orsay 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The book contains over 1001 practice questions for MCAT. The shear amount of practice from this book is guaranteed to help you prepare for MCAT one way or another.
How similar the questions are to actual MCAT physics questions is a whole another matter. And in truth not too similar. Firstly, actual MCAT physics questions are often based on a passage, all the physics questions from Examkrackers are standalone questions. Actual MCAT questions vary in topic from one question to the next, in this book questions are grouped together by topic. So if you're trying to simulate MCAT testing conditions while doing the exercises in this practice book it wouldn't be a realistic simulation. Secondly because all questions are standalone, it's hard to set time limits for a number of questions. Of course you're always trying to do the questions as fast as you can, being as careful as you can. But taking the MCAT requires a good sense of timing that you probably won't get from this book. Thirdly, the content of the questions in this book rely on what is extra to the MCAT. So there may be questions that require a bit of memorization and knowledge from other sciences. In itself this is not a bad thing, but it should dictate the way you use the book.
If you have time, I would recommend doing all the questions in there. And then moving on to more realistic practice from other books.
I hope this was a helpful review.

Editorial Review:

This book contains 1001 fully annotated physics questions in the MCAT format organized by topic. The range of difficulty is from easy to very difficult. There are questions on every physics topic that might appear on the MCAT.

realistic 5 out of 5 stars.

although i agree that the kaplan q bank and usmle-world are invaluable resources for step one, i personally hate hate HATE to study on the computer. this book was a good solution. i found it true to the exam, and suited me and my need to have something physically in front of me to scribble on. solidly reviewing the questions in this book -- 2 or 3 times -- would be a good basis for taking step 1.

The best all-around book for residents and practitioners. 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.

Editorial Review:

This new edition is thoroughly updated and revised, and features "Profiles in Anesthetic Practice." Written by leading clinicians and academicians, the Profiles will address subjects directly related to the clinical practice of anesthesiology and offer editorialized counterpoints to traditional views on issues in anesthetic practice.

Features:
* Concise writing style facilitates learning and review of content
* "Profiles in Anesthetic Practice" encourage critical thinking of the issues presented in the book
* Case studies in each chapter promote application of the concepts to practice
* Numerous figures and tables throughout book condense complex material for easier retention

Editorial Review:

This easy-to-use resource helps readers to master the most important principles and facts in pathology. More than 1,000 questions cover everything from the fundamentals of gross and microscopic pathology to the latest findings in molecular biology and genetics. Based on two of the field's best-selling, most authoritative textbooks-Kumar et al.: Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 7th Edition and Kumar et al.: Basic Pathology, 7th Edition-Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology, 2nd Edition is an ideal preparatory tool for the classroom, the USMLE Step 1, or the American Board of Pathology exam. * Offers more than 1,000 questions that follow the clinical vignette style used on the USMLE Step 1, emphasizing problem solving over rote memorization. Presented in both single-best-answer and extended-matching formats, they reflect levels of difficulty comparable to those found on the USMLE. * Provides an answer and a detailed explanation for every question at the end of each chapter. * Includes page references and a parallel organization to both Robbins and Cotran and Basic Pathology, making additional information easy to locate. * Presents correlative laboratory, radiologic, and physical diagnostic data to enhance readers' understanding of pathophysiology and to integrate pathology with other medical disciplines. * Uses numerous full-color illustrations to test readers' diagnostic skills. * Delivers a 50-question final "comprehensive" exam on random topics that mimics the format of the USMLE Step 1.
