Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own the 2nd ed. and am looking forward to owning the 3rd. This was recommended to me when I first started Critical Care (CC) Nursing 6 years ago and I have yet to find anything even close. I love the fact a physician wrote it. The information is much more clear than any CC nursing text/book I have bought. ... and I have tons. It follows more closely to the medical model, not a nursing format... ie. it doesn't include nursing diagnosis or nursing care. I feel much more confident discussing patients with colleagues, families and patients after looking up my facts in this book. As mentioned in other reviews, some may not think of this as a 'quick reference' book, but I know if I have it with me I am always referring to it. It's heavy because the print is large (also mentioned in other reviews) making it thick, but really is quite concise in all it's explanations. I would purchase this book for anyone involved in Critical Care.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well. New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; infection control in the ICU; and severe airflow obstruction. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts. Purchase of The ICU Book, Third Edition gives you free access to a Website featuring links from references to PubMed, updated regularly; and a directory of Websites handpicked by Dr. Marino.

Editorial Review:

War Surgery in Afghanistan and Iraq, with a foreword by Bob Woodruff, describes the management of nearly 100 cases of acute comat trauma, conducted in the forward austere operative environment of war in the 21st century.  Presented with vivid surgical photos, the cases encompass the spectrum of trauma that characterizes war today, as well as the medical interventions constantly evolving to treat these wounds.

With the most recent cases report from cobat hospitals within months of publication, this book presents emerging medical-surgical practice in real time.  The authors discuss in detail an array of topics including:
*  Damage control surgery
* Aggressive management of compartment syndrome
* New directions in the management of head injuries
* Use of tourniquets,
* Decision analysis in the approach to vascular repairs and
* Soft-tissue coverage of wounds.

War Surgery in Afghanistan and Iraq provides all medical professionals with insight into the extraordinary technical, clinical, and ethical challenges of their deployed colleagues.

Terrific 5 out of 5 stars.

I've tried Dale Dubin on three different occasions and always gave up midway. This book is easy to read, keeps up your interest, doesn't clog you with unnecessary information, has a good summary at the end of every chapter, good clinical examples are provided and the best part is that it is quite funny. I actually laughed out aloud where he says wolff-parkinson-white and lown-ganong-levine aren't the names of lawfirms!
I managed to finish it in two weeks and it is refreshing to come across an ekg book that doesn't make you want to take extended break times!
Only thing is I wish the author had used more arrows to point out the specific abnormalities and that the last section of practice EKGS was a little more comprehensive.
But I think it is a good resource for residents and students. And I would pick it over Dale Dubin anyday.

Editorial Review:

Now in its updated Fourth Edition, this popular and practical text presents all the information the clinician needs to read EKGs efficiently and accurately. It is an ideal reference for medical students in ICM courses, house officers, or anyone directly involved in patient care, whether student, teacher, or practitioner. This edition includes new information on pacemakers, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction treatment. The book features more than 200 facsimiles of EKG strips and numerous case studies and clinical examples. Also included is a pocket-sized review section that can be removed from the book and added to a pocket notebook.

I may buy several for my sisters and mother, not in the medical field. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am keeping this one for myself. Such a great informative book. I will be getting another as a gift for my aging mother. If you are not a medical professional you may want this book.

Completely Worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This manual is completely worthless. Do NOT buy if you are just re-certifying; I really don't know what I was thinking. I gaurantee that you will not learn anything new.

I suppose it is worthwhile for those learning CPR for the first time (at least it's cheap).

Helped me a lot in my neonatal resuscitation licensure. The CD was a good source by itself.

Easy to READ, easy to understand! 5 out of 5 stars.

Make sure you get this book, its the most updated and is very user friendly!

Good study tool 5 out of 5 stars.

I used this book to study for NRP, and reading through it and doing the tests definitely prepared me for the class. Others I know used the disc to study and liked it as well. It's nice that there are 2 different types of study tools for people since not everyone learns the same way.

Editorial Review:

(American Heart Association) Textbook includes the latest techniques and protocols from the 2000 guidelines, plus a new CD-ROM to enhance learning. Provides a self-study program, including case scenarios for each major resuscitation technique, the Medication Performance Checklist, other checklists, and more. Previous edition: c1994. Softcover.

Incredibly Easy misses it's mark..... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While I am a big fan of the "Incredibly Easy" nursing series, this one glosses over areas that need more in-depth explanations. This book will give you a very basic overview of most critical care topics, but it isn't specific or technical enough to get the job done. Good for beginners, but a real ICU nurse needs more than this book provides.

Incredibly good buy! 5 out of 5 stars.

The nursing made incredibly easy series of books are great. Critical Care Nursing is difficult to grasp and this book definitely helps!

Great questions and rationale 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for CCRN review if you like questions with rationale for quizzing, instead of reading page to page from a book. Very thorough cardiac section.

The actual exam was easier than this book...... 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I liked that this book was all practice multiple choice questions, similar to the actual exam but to be honest the questions scared me and were wayyyyyyyyyy too detailed compared to the exam. I think it could make you study stuff that you don't need to as opposed to concentrating on pertinent stuff on the test. I did badly on these questions but easily passed the test. let's just end it there......

Not Bad! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was full of questions categorized by system. It was close to the questions on the CCRN and helped a lot with multisystem, renal, pulm, hematology, etc in my case. I am a CVICU RN and did not need cardiac very much but read the book through 3 times the weekend before the test and passed. Easy to understand rationales that are very thorough. Would also recommend the CCRN practice exam booklet from AACNs bookstore website!

Editorial Review:

Third edition of a review for nurses preparing for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses certification exam. Over 800 multiple-choice questions with answers and explanations.

A Barash Follower 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

In Anesthesiology they say you are either a "Barash Person" or a "Miller Person." It is my personal opinion that Barash does probably the best job at providing content that is relevant and devoid of minutia. All sections contain material that is optimal for reading and assimilation. The text is large, yet it is far from dry. I highly recommend this as "The" backbone text for Anesthesiology!

Editorial Review:

Adhering to the same easy-to-use format as previous editions, the Fourth Edition of this text provides timely and insightful information into the principles of modern anesthesiology, office-based anesthesia, hazards and safety in the operating room, and the importance of cost-effective testing prior to administration of anesthesia. This comprehensive resource includes new chapters on the hazards of working in the OR, up-to-date information on how to prevent and manage OR fires if they occur, information on the newest guidelines for preoperative preparation including new fasting guidelines, administration of anesthesia for minimally invasive surgical techniques, and drug interactions.

an overly comprehensive review 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

Editorial Review:

Brandon/Hill Medical List selection (#56). Text covers anesthetic problems and provides logical and scientific fundamentals for patient care. Includes new chapters on liver transplantation, awake craniotomy, opioid detoxification, and implantable cardiac defibrillators. Previous edition: c1998. For residents and practitioners. DNLM: Anesthesia--examination questions.
