A sensible, balance approach to a healthy heart. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

As a former Health and Science Editor for American Medical News, I can heartily recommend "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Cholesterol." Dr. Devries offers a wonderful array of information and advice in plain English -- from what to eat and how to exercise to how to understand medical test results and work with your doctor.

One of the best features of this book is the way it merges traditional medicine with alternative approaches. This book does not present a lecture from a know-it-all conservative, traditional doctor or a treatise from a fringe physician on how health food and yoga will save your life. Instead, this book presents a balanced, reasonable approach to strong hearts and healthy lives by a traditionally trained physician who is open to new ideas, as long as they are proven and sensible. Dr. Devries integrates the best of both worlds, traditional and alternative.

Another appealing feature is the fact that some sections and chapters are clearly aimed at those who just want a simple explanation, while other sections and chapters provide detailed information backed up by rigorous research and thoughtful medical expertise for those who want to understand the science behind the suggestions.

Everyone should be as fortunate to have Dr. Devries as his or her personal doctor. The next best thing would be to read his book...and take it to heart.

Editorial Review:

Heart disease is largely preventable, but conventional cholesterol management is often inadequate. According to university cardiologist and leading prevention specialist Dr. Stephen R. Devries, avoiding heart disease requires a far more comprehensive approach that balances new high tech testing with low tech treatments. Now, in WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT CHOLESTEROL, Dr. Devries combines natural treatments with the latest scientific
advances. New types of cholesterol tests are highlighted that go far beyond routine testing to identify hidden risks. Expanding the traditional medical model, Dr. Devries illustrates the role of mind/body interventions, lifestyle, supplements, vitamins, and conservative use of medication for optimal prevention.

Editorial Review:

How one simple nutrient can prevent, treat, and help to reverse high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

This important book brings to light an often overlooked but central factor in some of the most prevalent and serious disorders that affect Americans today: magnesium deficiency. Written by a medical doctor and researcher who is considered to be the world's leading expert on the actions and uses of this vital mineral, The Magnesium Factor explains how magnesium deficiencies develop, why they are so widespread, and how they translate into metabolic disruptions that ultimately threaten the health of virtually every bodily system. The author then details how to determine whether you have, or are at risk for, this problem-and what you can do about it.

Backed by the latest scientific research, yet written in a clear, accessible style, here is the authoritative source for information on a topic of critical interest for all health-conscious individuals.

"the book" on exercise physiology 5 out of 5 stars.
42 of 45 people found this review helpful.

I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

Wow!!! A must have for all chefs 5 out of 5 stars.

I had seen this book at a friends business and thought it was good. Since I have ordered and received it I have had the chance to really review the contents and find it one book that I can use daily. The CD rom is also fantastic in the number of recipes it contains. One nice feature is that you can size the recipes to what you need. Another great plus. Well worth the money. Tom Elliott, CEC

I had to buy this book for my Quantity Foods course as a part of my Dietetics major. I actually liked the book, and I am going to keep it for later use. I thought the book was organized very well. Some of the charts in Chapter 2 and 5 that we used quite often were a little hard to find (because there are so many!).
It also presented a good overview of things you wouldn't think would be in the book, such as the school lunch program, etc.
I liked it!

Smaller Book with Less Info than 4th Edition 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!

The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.

The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

Excellent! 5 out of 5 stars.

Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field. Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in every chapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, and algorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you go through this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rate by adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!

Each author's excitment and passion for the topic covered comes through the pages loud and clear. Cleverly colored boxes of strategically placed information capture your eye and your mind! Another example.. in Chapter 6 on Water and Electrolytes.. the percentage loss of body water and degree of disability associated with the same could not be made any more obvious.. and you just don't forget the message.

This resource covers everything from herbal therapies and rationale to heart transplant and all points in between. Over 1150 pages to get the new Millennium off to a smart start! I already know this book will be among the most used in my professional library. It is highly recommended.

Info no one else will tell you! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This information came from a PhD physician. It's not myth and Dr. Enig is not trying to sell you ANYTHING. She gives reports from studies, including "double blind", from prestigious universities. One of the main reasons we're not given this info freely is that corporations selling products that would sales would be greatly affected don't want us to know this information. In some cases we have been and are being told outright lies for the almighty dollar. Don't take my word, read the books, read the actual studies from places like Harvard that have known the truth but the truth has mysteriously become very difficult to obtain.

The Ethics of Food Marketing 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am currently persuing a masters in International Marketing and my dissertation area is the ethics of food marketing. Mary Enig's masterpiece has given me the first major glimpse of a similar type of lobby which the cigarette industry persued for decades, has been evident in the food industry for the last 30 yrs or so. I am trying to identify any research out there which the edible oil industry knew about and should have taken account of, when propagating their edible oil agenda. From reading Mary's book, there is a strong suggestion this research is available. Anyone out there who can point me in the right direction, please know I would be humbly grateful.

On a personal note, the coconut oil is a real treat. All my life I have been plagued by sore and septic throats around this time of year. My experience this year suggests that I have discovered through Mary's book an excellent remedy for this ailment, as at each sign of the condition asserting itself, the coconut oil has done it's thing. Thank you Mary.

Excellent Resource, even beyond class 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

First of all, I am fascinated by nutrition. It's a pretty cool thing to know how food contributes to our everyday existence. With that in mind, this book is a fantastic nutrition resource and reference. I've read a lot of extracurricular nutrition guides over the years and was under the impression I had a pretty good handle on the concepts. Nope. I felt like an amateur once I got into this book. There is so much more to learn and this book lays it out into a very "digestible" format.

Editorial Review:

UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, Eighth Edition, provides the most current and comprehensive coverage of both "normal" nutrition, such as digestion and metabolism, vitamins and minerals, and life cycle nutrition, as well as "clinical" nutrition related to diseases, such as nutrition and gastrointestinal, liver, and cardiovascular diseases. The text also incorporates a number of learning tools designed to help you retain the information and apply your knowledge so you are better prepared to work in a clinical setting. Features include case studies, "How To" boxes with examples of problem-solving in real-world situations, and study questions that further conceptual understanding of the material. Regardless of your course background, the text is organized and written in a clear, easy-to-follow format that will get you actively involved in the field of nutrition.
