This is an incredibly helpful tool. It's well organized, concise, and easy to use. A great reference for RD's and other health professionals.

Great book, if it didn't fall apart! 1 out of 5 stars.

I am very dissapointed with the poor spiral binding on this book, (4th edition)! As a dietetic student, I don't have much money to spend on books as it is. As much as this one is priced, the publishers could have put a higher quality binding on it, (or made it a paperback, like previous editions). Pages are falling out constantly, especially since it the type of book you refer to all the time.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

Feeding your family a healthy diet (in the real world with real kids and real food) can be a challenge! Parents are trying to follow current nutrition guidelines, teach their kids healthy eating habits--and avoid too much junk food. But these goals are hard to meet when kids (and adults!) have strong food preferences; if there are daily fights over what, when, and/or how-much kids should eat; and because meals must to be fit into a super busy schedule. Feeding the Kids solves these problems with a new, easy-to-use system for feeding the entire familly well every day...all while enjoying eating more.

This system makes it easy to:

  • Find kid-friendly, healthy food easily using simple label-reading tricks that classify all foods into three categories: Smart foods (super healthy foods packed with nutrition); Empty items (junk food that provides little nutrition but fill kids up); and In-Between choices (partly Smart and partly Empty). Using this new system, anyone can pick out the healthiest versions of snacks, drinks, breakfast cereal, pasta, lunch meats, chicken nuggets, or any other food.
  • Eat enough Smart and In-Between food. Feeding the Kids includes a customized routine that makes meal planning incredibly easy. Even better, the plan insures that the whole family gets into the habit of eating enough Smart foods each day, including: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy foods and protein-rich foods. But this plan doesn't follow pre-set menus and certainly doesn't include eating foods the family dislikes. Instead, this plan can be adapted to include favorite foods, meals out and family food preferences.
  • Stop feeling guilty about junk food. Empties are a fun part of life, and everyone (adults and children) should be allowed to really enjoy them. The Feeding the Kids approach to these foods is to: recognize which foods are Empties (especially the sneaky ones that look healthy), eliminate less-loved Empty food, then really enjoy, guilt-free, the Empties the children do love.
  • Serve great-tasting, healthy meals, and fun, nutritious snacks...fast. Feeding the Kids includes over 50 mini-recipes and lots of simple menus ideas that are kid-tested and extremely easy to make. Recipes include healthy versions of: chicken nuggets, milkshakes, cookies, pancakes, sorbet, hot chocolate, hamburgers, popsicles and many more family favorites.

Get a real book 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book was awful. I read "The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program" (DesMaisons) first, and I was spoiled by more rational, documented approach to the subject. To be fair, I only got through the first part of this book before I put it down in disgust. This book is the rantings of someone who feels passionately about something. Great. Now back it up. You can't just say, "This is bad and you have to do this!" Well... I suppose you can. But in my opinion that makes for a lousy book for someone who is trying to learn and separate fact from hysteria.

ENLIGHTENING!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a WONDERFUL and ENLIGHTENING work! Thank you for compiling this information and for sharing your own personal experience with Sugar Addiction Nancy Appleton . I have an interest in sugar addiciton and it's affects on the human body and found your book to be a great learning source.

Editorial Review:

In this eye-opening book, Dr. Appleton shows how sugar upsets the body chemistry and devastates the immune system--leading to a host of diseases. Included in the book are self-tests to discover sugarholic tendencies and tests for food allergies, 19 simple techniques to banish sugar cravings, and three detailed, low-sugar food plans to ease into a low-sugar life. Original.

Excellent 12 Step Companion Book 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 55 people found this review helpful.

Being in recovery in OA for 6 years and reading the OA and AA 12 & 12's NUMEROUS times, I was looing for something new and fresh to read. This book truly fit the bill. The author really breaks the steps down into many subcategories and delves into issues deeply. Not a substituute for the AA or OA 12 & 12 by any means, but a great "study aid" to the 12 steps.

This book is life altering if you are ready to recover 5 out of 5 stars.
41 of 41 people found this review helpful.

I was shocked to see that there were actually negative reviews on this book.
One of the reviews I read sounds like it was written for another book as the content in the review was not related to any of the people or subjects contained in this book.
... On to what I have to say about this book. This is positively one of the greatest books I have read for overeaters. This is not a diet book, but a healing tool, and a spiritual tool using the twelve steps.
In many ways compulsive overeaters or binge eaters are like alcoholics. It is a compulsive disorder that has so little to do with food. We eat to "stuff" our pain, hurt, anger, fears, regrets, sorrows and disappointments.
Using the tools in this book and going to Overeaters Anonymous I have been binge free for two months. I haven't had any sugar during that time. At one time these both really did seem impossible. But thanks to this wonderful book and the help of OA I am healing. If you have problems with binge eating or compulsive overeating I think this book is well worth the money and more.

Editorial Review:

The author of Food for Thought takes a fresh, in-depth look at the Twelve Steps of Overeaters Anonymous. Each chapter carefully examines and interprets each of the individual Steps.

Editorial Review:

New author Staci Nix brings this market-leading textbook a fresh perspective and a wider scope. Nix keeps the appealing style and content of earlier editions but brings in new ideas - plus a healthy portion of practical insight gained from years of clinical experience. The book follows a logical organization, presenting basic concepts in Part 1, applying that content to specific demographic groups in Part 2, exploring the more specific roles of community nutrition and health promotion in Part 3, and finally focusing on nutrition as related to selected disease processes in Part 4.

  • Engaging design is a hallmark of this popular text, with colorful openers, illustrations, boxes, tables, and textual presentations.
  • Clinical Applications and For Further Focus boxes highlight hot topics, and analyze a particular concept or trend in depth.
  • Clinical Applications boxes provide case studies to focus attention on related patient care problems.
  • Key Concepts and Key Terms condense critical information into easy-to-find boxes.
  • Each chapter in Part 4 includes diet therapy guidelines that include various recommendations, restrictions, and sample diets for major clinical conditions.
  • Chapter summaries put content into perspective - the "big picture" of nutrition.
  • Challenge Questions use true/false, multiple-choice, and matching formats to test students' understanding of chapter content.
  • Critical Thinking Questions challenge students to analyze, apply, and combine various concepts.

  • Content threads - features shared with other Elsevier titles - help to streamline the learning process. These include a reader-friendly approach, attractive cover design, Key Concepts, Critical Thinking questions, Chapter Challenge Questions, Key Terms boxes, and boxes devoted to special content.
  • Cultural Considerations boxes point out the influence of a patient's background on his or her dietary intake.
  • The most up-to-date Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) information has been integrated throughout the text, including the newest data concerning energy, carbohydrates, fiber, fat, fatty acids, cholesterol, protein, and amino acids, as well as the brand NEW 2004 DRIs for water and electrolytes.
  • Coverage of hot topics and trends is expanded, including genetics, syndrome X, high-protein/low-carbohydrate diets, the increased incidence of type 2 diabetes, and antioxidants.
  • Key websites and resources are recommended for further study and research, offering access to in-depth information and updated content.
  • Up-to-date information enhances discussions in many chapters, including content on the role of nutrition during pregnancy and childhood, the resulting effects on population and age distribution, alternative means of agriculture, weight management, drug interactions, and much more.
  • The Cultural Dietary Patterns and Religious Dietary Practices appendix is extensively revised to include key food sources for a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, and religious groups.

Editorial Review:

Food is the original medicine. Food is the best medicine. From Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, acclaimed author of the national bestseller Meditation as Medicine, comes "Food as Medicine" -- a remarkable book that balances both of Dr. Khalsa's specialties by advising readers on how to achieve maximum health from simply eating responsibly and well. Grounded in medical science, Food as Medicine is a pragmatic and accessible reference for anyone seeking guidance on healthy eating or simple food remedies. Dr. Khalsa begins by setting readers on the right nutritional path -- regardless of their current eating habits -- and explains how to go organic, how to use natural organic juices and foods as medicine, and how special-food diets can help reverse the progress or diminish the symptoms of certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Hepatitis C. The book is filled with interesting food facts: Blueberries can increase brain longevity through their ability to help release dopamine in the brain. Kiwi fruit, because of its high levels of disease-fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients, is said to be an excellent source in battling cancer and heart disease. Pears, with their high content of certain minerals and fibers, can help prevent fibroid tumors. Drawing on Dr. Khalsa's own life experience as well as patient case histories, Food as Medicine outlines the seven principles of "The Khalsa Plan," details information on his other nutritional plans designed to target specific ailments, and lays out dozens of delicious, time-tested recipes that promote overall health and well-being.

Not very scientific 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be somewhat vague and non-scientific. It's all stuff I've read before. The 'quizzes' to determine how sensitive you are to wheat or grains are too broad. There is some good info on tests and glutens, but the part about 'exorphins' is just plain silliness. Save your time and money, here's a summary: (i) avoid grains, esp wheat (ii) go organic where possible (iii) it's hard and people might think you're weird but go for it.

Thought Provoking 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I came to this book as someone on a low starch diet to combat ankylosing spondylitis. I found the book concise and well argued and am now convinced that avoiding or at least reducing the intake of grain products is essential for those with grain sensitivities but also important for those otherwise well people seeking to avoid the modern maladies of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer etc. I highly recommend the book.

Editorial Review:

Diets high in grains can lead to a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, and more. Going Against the Grain outlines the disadvantages and potential dangers of eating various types of grains and provides practical, realistic advice on implementing a plan to cut back or eliminate grains on a daily basis. This book also includes easy-to-follow grain-free recipes and helpful suggestions for dining out.
