Habiff's Clinical Dermatology 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This text is very comprehensive, and provides in-depth descriptions of skin problems, plus superb photos. Thorough discussions of treatments is included. An excellent text for reference.

Best Book for a Derm Rotation 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you are a medical student doing a derm rotation or plan on entering a primary care residency, this book is THE book to own. I wouldn't have minded having the online edition, but with not knowing when the new edition would come out (and subsequently when the online subscription would run out), it didn't seem to be worth the money.

Worth having on the shelf 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The text is a wonderful reference for pictures of covered conditions, the only side note being a lack of good coverage for ethnic skin (there is a another book covering just that) and the photographs are in most cases showing advanced or extreme examples. Overall, a great book to have on hand in primary care.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and updated, the 4th Edition of this popular reference presents a wealth of new features to enable readers to identify, treat, and manage skin diseases more easily than ever. Atlas-like guidance, complemented with detailed, diagnostic text, combine to offer readers a user-friendly resource they'll consult again and again. Also available as a separate website and e-dition package, this book is widely recognized as the world's leading dermatologic manual.

Solid Ideas But Impractical Application for Most People 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Ok...I really haven't gone insane. I saw this particular "diet" mentioned on a show I was watching about a month or so ago and the dietitian talked about how the "core" of the program is actually pretty solid but she thought, by and large the supplement and skin care regimen that he's created is "excessive" - I think she was one step away from saying it's just too much (money) to be spending and too much to be taking in terms of vitamins and other supplements. If you did everything Perricone said, you'd be taking about 20 vitamins and various other supplements and putting 4-7 lotions and topical creams on your person everyday, twice a day...and most of them are hundreds of dollars apiece if you're buying his brand (and still quite pricey of you "shop around" for the same thing from another manufacturer). You'd be spending several thousand dollars a month just on supplements and creams before you even got to the food part of this.

Reading this and being able to be objective out it (i.e. I'm not looking for a quick fix, I'm looking for additional strategies to add to this whole healthy living adventure thing I've got going on) it's slap you in your face obvious how this guy makes his living because, according to him, everything can be made all better with these supplements and creams. My complaint with this is it's clearly for people who are making a LOT of money...he wants you to eat fish (specifically Alaskan salmon, but a few others are in there too) seven days a week and for more than one meal a day...according to him, that should be the staple of the diet with some chicken and turkey breast thrown in, but never beef. If everyone were to suddenly start eating like this, wouldn't that have a long term negative impact on the salmon population....for the amounts he's recommending, it seems like this diet will coast a lot of $$$ to stick to the letter of the plan. I think I've come away from it with some things I can defiantly work into my plan and it was interesting to read about health and well-being from a dermatologist perspective, but I'm guessing the people who can really embrace and benefit from this type of diet/lifestyle long term are the one's making loads and loads of money. I do give kudos that all the recipes are the embodiment of simplicity, even my 8 year old daughter could make everything listed in the recipe section...he seems to think under his plan you could eat this way for the rest of you life...I think you'd get sick of salmon after a while...no matter the health benefit, eating ONLY one food 95% of the time, in my opinion can be really hard to stick with long term (unless you're fanatical about salmon). Overall, interesting read from a dermatological perspective, but not something I think most people would be able or willing to do for a lifetime. I've come away from it with a few new ideas about supplements (small changes that I can make that won't cost me tons of $$$) and some new (for me) info on bad and good sugars and carbs. I give it a C simply because the average Joe couldn't get on this program without bankrupting themselves.

Editorial Review:

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on lupus, the co-author of the leading textbook, and an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, published in 1995, was the first book written by a leading authority specifically for patients. It immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease.
Now Dr. Wallace has completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This revised and expanded edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments as well as the most recent discoveries in cellular, genetic, and immunological research--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will discover 10 new blood tests your doctor can do, over 30 new drugs introduced since 1995, an extensive table of herbs that can be used for the disorder, and a large section on cognitive therapy and biofeedback. There are new sections on topics such as cell signaling, lupus susceptibility genes, selective cox-2 inhibitors, newer immunosuppressive therapies, and osteoporosis. And as in the first edition, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix listing lupus resource materials.
Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The new edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life.

Editorial Review:

Lever's "Histopathology of the Skin" is a classic work that has been used by generations of dermatopathologists, pathologists, and dermatologists to further their knowledge, in their current practices, and in the training of their own students. The pathophysiologic organization used in the book is based on Walter Lever's original scheme, with appropriate modifications over the years, and is more efficient than the pattern method, since related entities are discussed in juxtaposition, instead of being scattered about the book. Strengths of the book apart from its reputation as a classic work include its comprehensive coverage. The pattern-recognition "primer" used in the eighth and ninth editions will be retained and extended, based on ideas developed for the Atlas. This section serves to introduce the notion of pattern-algorithm diagnosis to the readership. The "primer" section will be extensively cross-referenced to the chapters and perhaps also to the second edition of the Atlas. A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text and an image bank.

Very helpful, easy to use!! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Derm notes is a concise reference that quickly defines each condition, gives etiology and prevalence within patient populations, and presents treatment options. It also contains images that are excellent for recognizing conditions as they present in the clinic.

I am currently on my Pediatrics rotation and have referred to Derm Notes frequently to confirm diagnoses and consult treament plans. It can't replace a large derm atlas, but that isn't its function. This book does what it's designed to do, provide a fast and accurate clinical reference for students and providers.

This book can take a lot of abuse. The plastic pages are tear-proof and can be written on and wiped off. Mine has seen heavy use without a mark or rip to show for it. This book is money well-spent.

Editorial Review:

Like all the books in the "Davis's Notes" series, "DermNotes" is a handy reference filled with clinically pertinent information that is small enough to fit inside a pocket. The book is packed with dermatological photos and loaded with content, covering the most common and serious skin diseases. Easy-to-use thumb tabs help users find information quickly and provide confident care. "DermNotes" offers succinct and critical information about dermatology disorders, and their diagnosis and treatment, at your fingertips.

Facial Diagnosis Of Cell Salts Deficiencies: A User's Guide.

This is a wonderful book, (I guess this is what I think). What I mean is now when I look at anyone's face or I, myself in the mirror, I can see just how deficient all of us are. Hmmm, did I need to know this?
Well, actually the answer is yes, and so should everyone else know this information. The pictures are the most revealing and the written guide is easy to follow.
I recommend this book to all who care about themselves, family and friends.

Editorial Review:

Cutting edge homeopathy includes the assessment of facial skin as a primary indicator of overall vitality, and the use of cell salts to improve health based on that diagnosis. Cell salts are twelve inorganic biochemicals found in the blood and tissues, and catalyse essential processes. This well-illustrated book includes: 'How to Read the Face' as a tool for diagnosis by skin colour, condition of eyebrows, size and colour of lips, blemishes, musculature, under eye circles and more. 'How to Use Cell Salts' through explanations of the twelve cell salts correlated with disease or imbalance conditions.
