Editorial Review:

Powerful Techniques to Relieve Shoulder Pain and Stiffness

Author Clair Davies’ own case of frozen shoulder led him to undertake an extensive study of trigger points and referred pain that eventually resulted in his best-selling Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Now this renowned bodywork expert and educator revisits the subject of frozen shoulder, offering the most detailed and comprehensive manual available for this painful and debilitating condition, a useful resource for self-care—with and without a partner—and for bodywork practitioners looking to expand their treatment repertoire.

Frozen shoulder, the syndrome name for several joint and tendon-related symptoms, is experienced as a loss of motion and pain in the shoulder and upper arm. It is most often observed in women between the ages of forty and sixty and individuals with type-two diabetes. Unlike traditional medical treatments for the condition, which rely on painkillers, steroid injections, and physical therapy and often do little to moderate symptoms or speed recovery, trigger point therapy can bring real and lasting relief. This gentle massage technique targets localized areas of tenderness in soft tissue. Put it to work for you to relieve pain, restore range of motion, and shorten recovery times.

A well-written exposition on a difficult subject. —Daniel J. Wallace, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine

In this outstanding book, Clair Davies aptly explains the rational for the trigger point approach based on the teachings of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons to the treatment of frozen shoulder. He presents his hypothesis well. It is time for the medical profession to accept alternative therapies in treating this condition, which does not often respond to routine medical care. —Paul B. Brown, MD, Ph.D., rheumatologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington

Clair Davies has done it again. He has written a wonderful book that provides insight and practical advice for the treatment of a common problem: frozen or stiff shoulder. He shows where the pain is, what the problems are, and how an individual can treat it, sometimes with the help of a partner. His illustrations and directions are clear. His case examples are helpful. This is a very useful book for those who have had rotator cuff injuries or other shoulder problems. —Robert D. Gerwin, MD, president and medical director of Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD, and the Janet G. Travell, MD, Seminar Series

Mr. Davies has done an outstanding job of tackling and simplifying a difficult topic that challenges even experienced clinicians. His review of the functional anatomy and kinesiology of the shoulder and the central role of the muscles in the control of the shoulder is a welcome review for physicians and therapists. His simple diagrams and descriptions make this topic understandable to those without formal training as well. Most importantly he shows very concrete ways in which a patient or clinician may effectively treat trigger points, which in my view are the primary cause of shoulder pain and stiffness in the majority of cases. I highly recommend this book to patients with shoulder pain and to clinicians involved in the evaluation and treatment of patients with shoulder pain. —Bryan J. O'Neill, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University

From a practical point of view, this is a really exceptional workbook, which could become a best-seller in its field. It is a wonderful overview concerning trigger points, which are the most common cause of frozen shoulder. I can recommend the book to all who are engaged in treating frozen shoulders, including medical doctors, therapists, and patients together with their partners. —Dieter Pongratz, MD, professor in the department of Neurology at the University of Munich Hospital, Friedrich-Baur-Institute, in Munich, Germany

The Frozen Shoulder Workbook is truly a remarkable and comprehensive text that will be indispensable for patients with chronic shoulder pain. Written from a layperson’s perspective, it is very readable and well illustrated, but still has plenty of background science and anatomy to satisfy clinicians as well. The book outlines a thorough approach to myofascial pain in the shoulder region and provides multiple treatment strategies to address the clinical variations that are seen. I will highly recommend it to my shoulder pain patients. —Steven R. Shannon, MD, Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD

Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction The Trigger Point Manual 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I received this book as a present for passing my medical masseuse exams, I thought I received a "how to fix it" book.
These books are much more for they cover anatomy, innervation, function, testing, reasons behind the pain, differential diagnosis, corrective actions all in addition to Triggerpoint Treatment.
The 2 volumes are a must have in your library for daily reference and/or study. The illustrations are a welcome aid to oneself or for explanatory purposes to clients.

Editorial Review:

The classic clinical text in pain management, Travell & Simons' Myofascial Pain & Dysfunction: Trigger Point Manual 2nd Edition , is designed primarily to bring aid to one of the most common patient complaints -- myofascial pain. It is an excellent resource for today's health care environment. Volume 1, Upper Half of Body , combines concise text and clear illustrations that show how to identify pain sources (trigger points - TrPs) quickly by signs and symptoms. Volume 2, The Lower Extremities , focuses on the lower body, with a special focus on the quadratus lumborum muscle, including an extensive review of functional scoliosis and short leg

Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: the Knee Owner's Manual 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Purchased for my father 2 days out of TKR. Now at 4 weeks out and progressing extremely well he states that the book is execellent and right on with what he has been experiencing. Wishes he would have read it prior to surgery to better prepare himself both mentally and physically. He has specifically repeated the physical preparation as the muscle recovery and the pain expectations he had are the biggest issues.

Per his recommendation this is an excellent book to properly prepare yourself.

Excellent book for general reference 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my mother when it became obvious she was going to eventually need knee replacement surgery. The comprehensive book gave my mother the information she needed to ask intelligent questions of her surgeon in their very brief appointments. She found the pre-operation strengthening exercises to be very helpful. The book was also handy after the surgery when she found some of the odd sensations she experienced during the course of her rehabilitation were normal and nothing to be alarmed about.

Editorial Review:

Complete with 145 exercises and nearly 200 illustrations and photos, this comprehensive guide helps readers navigate through the entire process of having one or both knees replaced. It explains what to consider when deciding on knee replacement, details the procedure, and provides extensive suggestions for the crucial postoperative rehabilitation. Patients will learn how to prepare their homes for rehab, and what to do, week-by-week, on the road to recovery.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology 5 out of 5 stars.

Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Editorial Review:

Applied kinesiology uses diagnostic muscle tests in conjunction with standard examination procedures to determine the causes of health problems. Written for professionals and nonprofessionals alike, Applied Kinesiology includes 32 muscle tests and a step-by-step guide for applying specific correction techniques.

better, but could still use improvement 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Several chapters, such as the one on the spine, lower extremities, skin, and pulmonary system are, indeed, quite well-written and fairly easy to follow.

The chapter on upper extremities, however, is simply in deplorable shape.

Moreover, the AMA guides did not do a good job of explaining when it is appropriate to use a certain method and when it is not. in many cases, the evaluator is not sure which method to use, even after a careful reading of the guides.

The overarching philosophy of the Guides is not explained as well as it should be.

All in all, however, a vast improvement over the much more difficult to use fourth edition.

needless to say, a physician using this book needs both an instructor and an appropriate patient population to refine his/her skills as a disability evaluator.

Editorial Review:

This is a standard in quality evaluations, and is the approved uniform way to evaluate, measure and report impairment. The material in the fifth edition is scientifically and consensus based, and is prepared by society experts. All body systems are covered with significant improvements in major chapters including cardiology, respiratory, muscular-skeletal, and skin. Also covers new conditions including HIV and latex allergy. Mandated or recommended in over 40 states of the US, and in Canada and Australia.

AMA - GEPI, 6th Edition 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The sixth edition of "The Guides" offers a slimmed-down version of the Fifth Edition, with sleaker looking tables and example boxes. On first glance, the differences are subtle. Certain deficiencies, such as using congenital disease in the examples, were propagated from the Fifth Edition.

Editorial Review:

Widely accepted as the most reliable medical reference on impairment evaluation since its inception in 1971, the new sixth edition of the "Guides" considers the latest evidence and patient function to achieve physician interrater reliability through an updated consensus approach.A series of uniform grids in each chapter provides a new standard for impairment evaluation. It provides a standardized approach to determine impairment using patient history, physical examination and clinical tests and employs an evidence-based methodologies and/or a consensus approach that serves to provide a consistent rating for conditions in each of the organ systems. Consideration of patient function and activities of daily living further ensure a consistent evaluation.
