WEAK IN NUTRITIONAL INFO - BUT AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWN 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I read this little book the first night I got it, and learned a great deal. I only wish I had this info before I lost my beautiful cat friend Taura to cancer almost 5 yrs ago. Even though I thought I was well informed at the time Taura was sick, I've since learned that I really was not, and a book like this could have made a real difference. Veternarians do not always have the skills or knowledge to give thorough information and this book has an abundance of real life info and leaves one with a great deal to think about.

HOWEVER, I was very disappointed in the section on nutrition, which seemed to lack a full view of nutritional options. Even though there was info given on the importance of protein, carbohydrates, etc. the main recommendation for a cancer fighting food was Hills Diet, which felt bias. Some info was given on supplements, but none on other options for foods, such as the possiblity of homemade diets, either cooked or raw, which under the guidance of a good vet could be the answer to good health, depending on the individual needs of each animal. Also, no other quality foods were listed, of which there are many, which with proper guidance may also be appropriate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OTHER NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS WITH A VET WHO KNOWS NUTRITION, AS MANY DO NOT.

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO HAVE - I will keep it near and hope I will not need it.

Editorial Review:

Since the third edition of Tumors of Domestic Animals there has been an enormous expansion of our knowledge about the melocular mechanisms of tumor development and the ancillary aids used diagnose neoplasms .

The fourth edition condenses this new body of information and presents it in a way that is useful to diagnostic pathologists, residents, veterinarians, and oncologists. The format of the previous editions has been maintained, but the text and the illustrations are substantially changed or entirely different. Readers will be able to find salient clinical information, prevalence data, biological behavior, and most importantly, accurate information about gross and microscopic lesions to help diagnostic pathologists establish an accurate morphological diagnosis. The editor and authors of Tumors of Domestic Animals, all recognized experts in their fields, recognize the need for accurate morpological diagnoses in veterinary patient care, particularly with the numerous treatment modalities now available to oncologists and owners. This landmark reference in veterinary pathology provides the applicable information that clinical veterinarians need and want to make decisions about treatment of the animals in their care.

Loved It 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Since I welcomed a dog into my home for the first time 11 years ago I have enjoyed reading books about other's relationships with their dogs. Among my favorites are "Colter" by Rick Bass, "A Rough Shooting Dog" by Charles Fergus and the more famous "My Dog Skip".

I loved this book. "Cliff and I" will take a place among those other fantastic books on my shelves at home.

This book is different than those in that it has a narrower focus in the story of Cliff fighting cancer while Joanne aids in his battle. It is this battle that creates the story and the lessons contained in the narrative.

Like those other books, in this book we learn that the dogs in our lives teach we humans more about ourselves than we ever knew. The author finds herself uplifted and forever changed by witnessing the force of life that flowed through her dog as he held onto and relished every moment and every breath he had on this earth.

It is a great read that will leave the reader changed as well--walking away with a reminder of the very fragile and precious nature of life itself--both in the human and animal world.

Editorial Review:

"This is a heartwarming, inspiring story of love and devotion between JoAnne and her dog, Cliff, and how they faced this disease head-on. They both remind us of the wonder of that precious relationship we all know, yet find beyond our abilities to explain - the human-animal bond." ~Gregory K Ogilvie, DVM Diplomate ACVIM Director, CVS Angel Care Cancer Center

Excellent resource book for veterinary students 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I highly recommend this book for all veterinary students due to its thoroughness and most of all because it is current (or as current as one can be in the field of oncology). It reads well and provides a great number of well thought out illustrations and pictures.Plus, it highlights the major systems and neoplasms there of and covers most of the protocols for each cancer.

Editorial Review:

Purdue Univ., West Lafayette, IN. Text for clinicians on cancer in dogs and cats. Organized into four sections: The Biology of Cancer; Principles of Cancer Diagnosis; Treatment Modalities; and Clinical Signs, Diagnosis and Treatment of Specific Cancers. Full color and halftone illustrations. Extensive references.

Overall good textbook 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Managing the Veterinary Cancer Patient is a good, basic oncology textbook for the veterinary practitioner. Understandably, people have concerns about the dose of CCNU. It should be noted however (contrary to what was stated in another review) that 60-90mg/m2 doses given repeatedly are not fatal in 100% of patients. Two scientific articles published within the last year (JVIM) demonstrate that some dogs can tolerate dosages in the 60-90mg/m2 range. Admittedly, the potential for irreversible thrombocytopenia should force us to act cautiously (and perhaps more conservatively) when using CCNU. However, we should also refrain from branding those that recommend higher doses of CCNU as "irresponsible" and from implying that they should be deemed liable for any unfortunate outcomes.

An Excellent and Readable Textbook 5 out of 5 stars.

Speaking as a board-certified veterinary oncologist, this is one of the most useful textbooks that I own. It is a practical handbook for students, general veterinary practitioners and clients but it is also provides enough detail to be useful to specialists. The chapters on specific diseases represent the most thorough review of the veterinary oncology literature that has been conducted in many years, perhaps ever. The book discusses controversial points in detail rather than making blanket conclusions, and the source of the information is always identified - usually the scientific literature (carefully referenced) and occasionally the considerable professional experience of the authors (noted when this is the case). In comparison to the other major veterinary oncology textbooks on the market it is by far the standout for its precision and thoroughness, and for the thoughtful presentation that makes this wealth of information accessible and digestible. Bravo to the authors for their contribution to the field.

Editorial Review:

Neoplasms are common in dogs and cats and it has been estimated that 50% of dogs and cats aged over 10 years die of neoplasia. The demand for treatment of pets with cancer is increasing and seems likely to do so for the foreseeable future as more animals become insured and their treatment costs are covered.

The purpose of this book is to provide a basic clinical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of the more common tumours in dogs and cats for the practising veterinary surgeon, undergraduate student and veterinary nurse. It is not intended to be a comprehensive reference book, covering all aspects of veterinary oncology, since several such texts exist. Rather it seeks to provide a core of basic, easily accessible and clinically relevant information on general aspects of veterinary oncology.

The first three chapters present general background information on pathogenesis, tumour biology, managing the cancer patient and the most frequently used methods of treatment. Practical details of chemotherapy and guidance on safety are given, as well as coverage of radiotherapy. The remaining chapters then provide specific information on the epidemiology, aetiology, pathology, presentation, staging, management and prognosis for tumours occurring in the different body systems.
