All Amphibian & Reptile Keepers should have this book 5 out of 5 stars.

And you should have it before you need it--as in, before you animal is sick. This is a complete and well done reference guide for those of us who don't need to know the vet manual's textbook explanations and can't afford to own those massive volume collections anyhow. It covers basic diagnosis, examination, equipment, internal and external parasites, medicines, dosages, tips for treating, how to administer meds to differnt types of animals, hygiene information, and, best of all to help your vet out, it contains photographs of microscope slides of what the nematoads or protozoans will look like and sketches of them for identification of relative size.

If you don't have an exotics or herp vet near you, this will help your furry pet vet help your herp. Believe me, I am thankful every day that I got this book when I didn't really need it because it meant the small town horse and dog vet clinic could see my old world chameleon and HELPED me, like they would not have been able to without this book.

Editorial Review:

No one who keeps reptiles can afford to be ignorant about reptile parasites and their treatment. This best-selling, easy-to-use book offers readers essential information on how to identify the most common parasites of reptiles and how to most effectively treat them. Includes drug charts and dosages. Highly recommended for hobbyists and pet stores. Illustrated with many black and white photos. 83 pp.

Editorial Review:

Long established as a bestselling parasitology book for veterinary practitioners and veterinary students, the previous edition lead by Urquhart was praised as "...probably the best available veterinary parasitology text for the practitioner" (Clinical Insight).

This third edition of Veterinary Parasitology is a major update which builds on the spirit of earlier editions. New authors with a wealth of experience of teaching and researching the subject have thoroughly revised and restructured the book to reflect modern teaching practice and the most up-to-date coverage of advances in this area.

  • Arranged by host species and organ systems within the host, with extensive cross-referencing to enable ease of access to information on particular parasites.
  • The core focus is on parasites of livestock and companion animals, but new sections also cover parasites of poultry and gamebirds, laboratory animals, exotic pets and 'farmed' species.
  • Expanded sections on protozoa and ectoparasites, as well as coverage of a larger selection of parasites of veterinary significance around the world.
  • The majority of parasitic diseases are now covered in detail using a standardised format for each parasite to allow easy referencing and identification and for comparison between species within a genus.

Suitable for veterinary students, as well as researchers of veterinary parasitology, veterinarians in practice and in government service and others who are involved in aspects of parasitic disease.

This book was required reading for a class and very hard to get through. I read a lot of dry materials but this was more like a "teaching story." That being said, other people in the class loved it but did not like when the "science part" was explained and just wanted the story. Helpful for people who have little exp. with working with families but just another case study for everyone else.

    Editorial Review:

This is the publication professionals and future professionals turn to for detailed information on pathology and parasitology in veterinary medicine. It features clear-cut descriptions, case studies, and methodologies experienced in the practical setting. Veterinary professionals and those in the animal, equine, dairy, and poultry fields will benefit from explanations about technical procedures, parasite life cycles, zoonotic potential, diagnosis, and treatment. A review of current literature provides valuable background, and the accompanying CD-ROM Image Library features extensive color images of parasites and various pathologies.

      • Printed end sheets with a list of Greek and Latin roots make it easier to learn many of the names that appear in the text.
      • A discussion of the honeybee as a host highlights this important colonizer and its effect on animal agriculture.
      • Extensive updates on veterinary pharmaceutical products for animal parasites are included, with quick-reference tables new to this edition.
      • A separate chapter on histological diagnosis by Dr. Mark Eberhard - an expert in the identification of parasites in histological sections offers advice for identifying parasites in this type of material.
      • An appendix of Antiparasite Products by Species is included for easy reference.

    Editorial Review:

Free-living birds encounter multiple health hazards brought on by viruses, bacteria, and fungi, some which in turn can significantly impact other animal populations and human health. Newly emerging diseases and new zoonotic forms of older diseases have brought increased global attention to the health of wild bird populations. Recognition and management of these diseases is a high priority for all those involved with wildlife.

Infectious Diseases of Wild Birds provides biologists, wildlife managers, wildlife and veterinary health professionals and students with the most comprehensive reference on infectious viral, bacterial and fungal diseases affecting wild birds. Bringing together contributions from an international team of experts, the book offers the most complete information on these diseases, their history, causative agents, significance and population impact. Focusing on more than just treatment, special emphasis is given to disease processes, recognition and epidemiology.

For veterinarians and veterinary technicians involved in the diagnosis of parasitism in animals, this book has become essential reading. As with the 6th edition, the 7th edition of Veterinary Clinical Parasitology has been prepared under the auspices of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and focuses on morphologic identification of parasites of domestic animals. The various techniques described provide an accurate and cost-effective means of diagnosing parasitic infections in animals.

The 7th edition has been expanded significantly to include additional globally important parasites. Extra text material has been added for each parasite to indicate its distribution, life cycle, and importance, and the illustrations are now in color to aid diagnosis.

    Key features:

    * User-friendly layout for quick reference

    * Includes over 400 color photographs

    * Expanded parasite coverage

    * Includes contributions from many AAVP members

    Editorial Review:

Brucellosis is one of the most common zoonotic diseases, occurring in many parts of the world. It manifests itself in all the tissues and organs of the body and attracts the attention of a correspondingly multidisciplinary body of medical practitioners and researchers. Even 17 so-called brucellosis-free countries experience the disease. Some patients contract the disease in their country of origin and present a diagnostic trap to the unwary clinicians. In this volume a full description of the clinical aspect and pathology of the disease is given, and current treatment is discussed. This updated edition includes five new chapters: Endocrinal Brucellosis, Difficulties in Diagnosis and Management, HIV and Brucellosis, Bioterrorism and Brucellae, and Spondylitis with Neurobrucellosis. The book presents a complete, up-to-date picture of the disorder and should appeal to clinicians, students, researchers and also to veterinarians.

Understanding Zoonotic Diseases is written for both animal and human healthcare professionals and students that will help them understand specific zoonotic diseases. Designed as a stand-alone book, it introduces the reader to microbes including bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and prions, and describes specific diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Extensive use of images, photographs, tables, and clinically relevant comments helps the reader understand the role of animals in causing diseases in humans. Review questions at the end of each chapter and online critical thinking questions help the learner gain a deeper understanding of the material and aid in retention.

I met the first edition 30 years ago in the U. of Illinois library, when I was in graduate school. Now, a full fledged medical and veterinary parasitologist, I had a second chance and . . . I just had to have it! Not because it was necessary to my work but because I remembered it as a jewel of a book. I hesitated a bit because the price was kind of steep for just a memento. Boy, but what a memento! The tight text and tiny letters are rarely interrupted by illustrations, and these are usually photographs; of only average quality, they are of exceptional content. It does not cover all the comon parasitic infections (the way they treat them, it would take an encyclopedia to do so!) but only the major ones. The survey of each infection, however, goes much farther than one would expect for a book on "wild mammals." It reviews (and references) a large part of the recent literature as it applies to any host; wild, domestic, or human. I found that it quickly gained a place among my favorite references. If you are interested in Parasitology at all, you MUST get it. You can't afford to wait another 30 years for the next edition.

    Editorial Review:

The first edition was highly successful and a respected reference book for many years. This extensive revision, by 30 contributing authors, details the latest advances in the recognition and detection of parasitic diseases in free-ranging and captive mammals, and addresses wildlife management and public health considerations. It also discusses possible emerging diseases and provides an important expanded section on protozoan parasites. Illustrations include photographs, photomicrographs and drawings, plus over 100 tables.

This book is fully referenced and will be useful to students and professionals in parasitology, and to a wide range of wildlife biologists, veterinarians and public health professionals.
