Not what I expected 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Being an Osteopath I thought it might have been a book on how one might be able to perceive the field. Unfortunately it is more about evidence for the field which is more theoretical than I had hoped for.

Editorial Review:

Science has recently begun to prove what ancient myth and religion have always espoused: There may be such a thing as a life force.

In this groundbreaking classic, investigative journalist Lynne McTaggart reveals a radical new paradigm—that the human mind and body are not separate from their environment but a packet of pulsating power constantly interacting with this vast energy sea, and that consciousness may be central in shaping our world.

The Field is a highly readable scientific detective story presenting a stunning picture of an interconnected universe and a new scientific theory that makes sense of supernatural phenomena. Documented by distinguished sources, The Field is a book of hope and inspiration for today's world.

A Keeper 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a book to keep in your library for periodic re-reading. I wish I hadn't waited so long this time, to re-read it. Understanding and practicing this "philosophy" can change one's life for the positive.

Editorial Review:

In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

Nobody Does It Better 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Larry Osborne, among many other gifts, is an established expert on how to help churches get 'sticky' --- that is, keeping and including the adults and families that they initially attract through programs, events and ministries.

Simply put: Nobody does it better!

Osborne is the senior pastor of North Coast Church in Vista, California (7,000 plus attend each weekend) and has led the church for three decades. Always good at drawing new people in, North Coast was not originally strong on incorporating and including.

Fast forward to right now --- North Coast does "sticky" better than any other church in North America. One key factor is a dynamic small group program that actually functions as the heart of the ministry.

In this excellent new book Osborne shows you how, step-by-step, a congregation can intentionally become more sticky and thus more effective at long-term discipleship, equipping for ministry, and thus mission.

A must-read for congregations, church boards, church leaders, and anyone interested in long-term assimilation/incorporation/inclusion of those who attend a local community of faith.

Editorial Review:

The greatest challenge facing most churches today isn’t getting people through the front door—it’s keeping them from leaving through the back door. In his new book, Larry Osborne reveals what it takes to cultivate a “sticky” church and reveals the strategy of sermon-based small groups to retain members while leading your church into even deeper levels of discipleship.

Rob Bell Shows Us More 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Througout his book, Bell reiterates the theme that ""One of the central assertions of the Christian worldview is that there is `more.' " (19) Over and over he gives us deeper and deeper ways to think about the gospel, evangelism, denominational differences, and how we live our lives on a daily basis. No matter which side of the postmodern issue you are on, you will find much food for thought. He writes in a casual, yet profound style that keeps the interest of the reader and draws that reader into a more relevant understanding of being a Christian.

An Appeal to Think 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I consider myself theologically conservative. While some reviews portrayed the book as a liberal treatise, I did not see it in this way. What I took away most from the book is the need to continuously challenge, re-think, and revisit doctrine. Bell also did a good job of putting things in context.

If you are dogmatic about your interpretation of the Bible, whether liberal or conservative, this is not a book with which you will agree. But the biggest point in the book is challenge and thinking. Bell gets this point across well.

Editorial Review:

God never changes, nor do the central truths of Christianity. But our understanding of those truths is in constant flux. Christians will always be exploring and discovering what it means to live in harmony with God and each other. Now in softcover, Velvet Elvis offers original and refreshingly personal perspectives on what Christianity is really about.

Journey of Souls 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've never read anything about where we go between lives. Now the question is answered and it is astounding!!! This book will give you answers, hope, and will make you really think about how you are doing in your life. Read the next one too.

Editorial Review:

Journey of Souls is a controversial yet inspiring investigation of the big question we all face at one point or another: "What happens after we die?" To find the answer, Newton opens cases from his private practice in which he hypnotically regressed his clients to a point between lives--after death, but before birth. Not only does Newton grapple with reincarnation, the spirit world, and the nature of the human soul, he also tackles equally sticky questions such as "Is there a Heaven and Hell?" and "What are ghosts?" Readers with a penchant for skepticism will balk at the lack of physical evidence to back up the claims in Journey of Souls, but the book remains a reassuring voice, affirming that our existence is not limited to the boundaries of our mortal flesh. --Brian Patterson

Very hard pill to swollow 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative, however, there were many times I was ready to throw this book against the wall. I did this study with my Baptist church's small group. I am a pretty liberal Christian, so I disagreed with several points. However, once I got over my initial strong negative feelings towards Nancy's views, I came to understand what she was trying to say. This provided for some heated discussions and really was one of the best small group studies I've ever been apart of, if for the debating if nothing else.

The Truth Will Set You Free! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is absolutely amazing. Nancy has a way of bringing out God's truth in an easy and non-threatening manner. When reading this book, you must be willing to look outside of the box and take a hard objective look at yourself. Women for so long have been deceivd by what Satan and the world says is right in regards to our roles and women, wives, and mothers. This book helped me to understand why being a biblical woman with an understanding and respect for the loving God that created me is so important. This book has reminded me that my role is vital to the survival of my family, and reminded me of the value of what is truly important...not materialism, not being independent or successful, not two incomes, not being too busy to enjoy our lives, but trusting in God enough to be a content woman who is not afraid to be under the headship and covering of my husband and an available mother, both physically and spiritually, for my children. This book has helped me to realize that I need to change some things in my life and that true happiness and blessings will come when I live my life submitted God's way. I got myself into this mess with work and materialism, I know with God's help I can gradually undo some of my financial mistakes that keep me from staying at home, and that I too can have a new found freedom in my life. I am sincerely looking forward to it! I look forward to simplicity in my life and can focus all of my energy on my God, my husband, and my children. God bless you! This book rocks!

Editorial Review:

The lies Christian women believe are at the root of their struggles. In Lies Women Believe, Nancy Leigh DeMoss exposes areas of deception common to many Christian women -- lies about God, sin, priorities, marriage and family, emotions, and more. She deals honestly with women's delusions and illusions and then gently leads them to the truth of God's word that leads to true freedom.

Editorial Review:

This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most beloved and important religious figures in history.

During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time.

Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood and director of the Mother Teresa Center, MOTHER TERESA brings together letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul.

Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her death, MOTHER TERESA is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life and work continue to be admired by millions of people.

Editorial Review:

Although she still prays for Caleb, Nellie Mae Fisher has broken up with her beau. Now, her heart's greatest longing is for more knowledge of the Lord. Review for Healing after loss 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Someone gave me this book after I lost my 13 year old to cancer. What I love about this book is each page gives you something to think about or ponder. As you read each page, you will either be moved by what is said, or not. If it resonates with you, you can stop and ponder what has been said. If one particular page is meaningless,
you just continue to read on until something else hits home with you.

It is hard to concentrate when you are grieving, so having a page a day to read and think about is a very good place to start. ....I have purchased this book several times now for other bereaved parents and for a friend who lost her husband... another who lost a sister....I highly recommend it!

Healing After Loss 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

You can't buy happiness, so why not grow your own? All you need is a piece of fertile ground (your beautiful mind) plus some hardy seeds of wisdom, creativity, and plain good sense. In this inspiring new collection from the pages of O, The Oprah Magazine, more than 75 warm, wise, and insightful contributors write about beating the blues, dropping the weight, kissing fear goodbye, making your dreams real, and putting your best face forward (with a little help from the right haircut, of course).

O's Big Book of Happiness offers you more than 100 wonderfully written, empowering articles that will turn your life around, whether you're fighting loneliness, illness, self-doubt, or a crisis of faith. World-class writers, artists, entrepreneurs, and political leaders, such as Alice Sebold, David Sedaris, Elizabeth Swados, Richard Branson, and Barack Obama, open a window on the life lessons that have galvanized them and set them on the road to joy. Among the in-house experts offering advice and comfort, financial adviser Suze Orman defuses the minefields of money management, and life coach Martha Beck clues you in on how to handle your most intractable critic—you!—while Dr. Phil sheds light on the push-me-pull-you confusion of intimate relationships. Be prepared for unconditional honesty and reality-based solutions, even if you think you've hit bottom and there's no place left to go. As Oprah writes in one of her essays, "Everything in life happens to help us live."

Have you ever wondered :

  • What's the secret to getting in shape—and staying that way? Rebecca Skloot tells you how to trick your brain into actually craving diet and exercise (page 10), while O's Mental Health Kit offers therapist-tested techniques for getting your life back in balance (page 46), and Oprah discusses how the best healthcare begins with self care (page 61).

  • When your worst-case scenario finally happens, how do you carry on? Onetime war correspondent Geraldine Brooks writes that a diagnosis of cancer, which she once feared more than terrorist bullets, proved to be a path to grace (page 36). Beverly Donofrio tells how she endured a rapist's violent attack by refusing to say yes to despair (page 74), and meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg explains how to make those crucial human connections that are guaranteed to melt away loneliness and refresh your faith (page 149).

  • Are there any surefire ways to sidestep relationship pitfalls? O's writers investigate an exciting new therapy that could keep you from falling for that bad-news guy—again (page 172)—and a nontalking cure that just might save a compassion-starved marriage (page 180). Lauren Slater explores the price some of us are willing to pay for love—even when it has four legs and a tail (page 214).

  • How's your brilliant career going? O's in-the-trenches experts tell you how to soothe the savage boss (page 226) as well as take a risk, reconnect with your wildest ambitions, and embark on the professional life youĂ•ve always dreamed about (page 232).
