Informative and entertaining - it earns its status as a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In the weeks before the election, as the financial crisis spun ever farther out of control and the pundits' shrieks grew ever more shrill, I browsed through "Popular Delusions.." and found solace. Charles Mackay's extraordinary survey of the various manifestations of mass hysteria throughout history cannot help but offer perspective. He reminds us that, no matter how battily crazy a particular fad might seem, it's already been done by our ancestors. There is truly nothing new under the sun; the catalog of human daftness, though entertainingly long and varied, is nonetheless finite.

It's all here in Mackay's book, laid out with a kind of detached amusement that leaves no doubt as to where the author stands.

Market craziness got you down? It may cheer you up to read about the Mississippi scheme that wrought such havoc on the French treasury in the 18th century, while the South Sea Bubble engulfed the English, or to refresh your memory on Holland's infamous Tulipomanic excesses.

Three of the longer sections of the book are devoted to alchemy, the crusades, and witch-hunting. By the accumulation of examples and anecdotes across the geographical and historical spectrum (i.e. from different times and places), Mackay demonstrates that human folly remains a constant down the ages. He doesn't beat us over the head with this message - he simply assembles the data, with no overt analysis, and leaves us to draw the inevitable conclusion.

Most of your favorite targets are discussed in the book: eschatological prophets, fortune tellers, spiritualists, mediums, and the good Dr Mesmer and his imitators. The anecdotes are often hilarious, even more so because of Mackay's tone of dry amusement. But he knows when to administer the coup de grace, as for example, when he shows how easy it is to attribute post hoc meaning to the notoriously vague quatrains of Nostradamus. One can only wish that the folks at The History Channel would read these sections and take them to heart.

Shorter chapters are interspersed on topics as diverse as the wave of spouse-poisoning that swept through the courts of Europe in the 17th century, the influence of politics and religion on men's hair and beard styles, haunted houses, popular admiration of great thieves, duels, relics, and the sudden rise and fall of certain catchphrases or songs in big cities. (Yadda yadda yadda, anyone?)

This book is ideal for browsing. It's all pretty interesting stuff, presented clearly and wittily. You can learn quite a bit and enjoy yourself doing so - what's not to like?

Its classic status is well-deserved.

Editorial Review:

A complete repackaging of the classic work about grand-scale madness, major schemes, and bamboozlement--and the universal human susceptibility to all three. This informative, funny collection encompasses a broad range of manias and deceptions, from witch burnings to the Great Crusades to the prophecies of Nostradamus.

Reconciliation...Really? 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Websters Dictionary defines atonement as reconciliation, reparation for an offense or injury:satisfaction.
Briony Tallis is a brilliant, fanciful and immature girl of just 13 or so as this book begins. Briony Tallis is a brilliant, celebrated, accomplished writer of 77 as this story ends.

As a reader, I did not understand the title before the last chapter titled "London, 1999".

From the beginning I found this book bumping along with a sluggish story line. Filled with Briony's personality, this story was rather mishapen. I wasn't sure I liked the book. I set it down many times from lack of interest and boredom. Not familiar with the story, I vaguely remembered it had been a movie-never saw it, and thought, never WILL see it.

I hate to not finish a book, so I kept on with reading a few pages each night before bed. (hint, hint)
Somewhere, about three quarters of the way through, the book offered redemption. No pun intended.
The interesting thing is, I couldn't care about the characters. Not until Briony is eighteen and training as a nurse in WWII England does the story start to reveal the treasure.
I can't reveal the ending of this book. It is for each reader to find on his or her own. It may be different for each person, but I found this novel to have been a surprise. I didn't like this story half way through, I have ended the book with a new opinion.
Briony Tallis must atone for her life altering mistake.I like that this author did not make it so simple. Satisfaction complete.

Editorial Review:

On a summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment’s flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant. But Briony’s incomplete grasp of adult motives and her precocious imagination bring about a crime that will change all their lives, a crime whose repercussions Atonement follows through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century.

The Best Book Ever Written? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I keep a copy of this book nearby at all times for quick reference, my personal copy home to numerous marks and marginal notes. Every line reads as the most delicate of poetry, honed and refined to the purest and most undeniable words of truth and wisdom.
This may be the height of human understanding, bringing a peace and solidarity which encompasses the many to make us all one.

Eight Decades Later: Still Relevant, Insightful and Eloquent 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

These days, Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" often gets dismissed as "hippie" literature. Yet, this book had been a bestseller LONG before the 1960s. Originally published in 1923, it almost instantly became a hit and even did well through the Great Depression. Today, Gibran's claim to fame is being the third best-selling poet of our time, behind Shakespeare and Lao Tzu... and pretty much entirely based on sales of this book. When his publisher, Alfred Knopf was asked who the audience for the book was, he flippantly dismissed the question. "It Must be a cult," he retorted.

Yet there is no such cult. What's incredible is that there's absolutely no marketing hype behind the success of this book. Gibran himself is long gone. There is no political, religious, or commercial enterprise attached to his name bent on winning souls and/or profits. The Gibran estate has merely been licensing copies year after year in response to the demand - a demand fueled pretty much entirely by word-of-mouth and chance discovery. The fact is, the twenty-six poems in this book have a surprising and suprassing relevance, insight and compassion. Broken down into several topics ("On Love", "On Work", "On Joy and Sorrow", etc.) the book itself recounts the sermons of a fictional poet leaving behind the gift of knowledge before he leaves his homeland.

I first found Gibran through a setting of his poem "On Children" by local Washington, D.C. singers Sweet Honey in the Rock on their album, "Breaths."

"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you."

At the time I was about to leave for college and eighteen years of living under my parent's roof had made me restless for autonomy. That poem eloquently expressed everything I was yearning to say to them in my hours of frustration and adolescent angst. It later proved to be a reference to turn to in times where I needed confidence to live an independent and fulfilling life, while still maintaining respect and compassion towards the parents who had raised me.

I am not exaggerating when I say that the poems in this book have kept me grounded and sane throughout some of the most troubling times in my life. Our modern lives are ever hectic, stressful and busy - wrought with drama, frustration, depression, etc. The knowledge in these poems brings me back to a "middle ground" - there is a sage wisdom and clarity in the poems that has often been helpful for me in "unwinding" and coming back to earth. They bring me back to a place of clarity from whcih I can see my life from a wider perspective.

Though Gibran himself was a Christian and despite the title and conceit of the book, this is not really a religious book. The insight in this book would be applicable to your life even if you are an atheist. What's more, the poetry is mostly imagistic. Do not expect the academic poetics of Gibran's contemporaries Eliot or Pound or even Frost. They are written with the aim of being accessible and immediate to the reader and rely mostly on clear metaphors and vivid imagery.

Copies of "The Prophet" are not hard to come by. Perhaps check out the book's table of contexts either using Amazon's "Search Inside" feature or in your local bookstore and see if it addresses a problem or issue you are dealing with. That's a good a place as any to start with. Chances are, you will find something that speaks to you on some level.

Great story / devotional book for Advent 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was our family's best Advent yet! Occasionally "Jotham's Journey" was a bit too action-packed for our daughter (age 5), but she and our son (age 8) couldn't wait for each day's segment. Arnold Ytreeide is a master storyteller. His intricate blending of facts about biblical times into a fast-paced storyline captured our imaginations. We'll never look at Advent the same again. Our family can't wait to read Ytreeide's other books in 2006 and beyond.

all around great 5 out of 5 stars.

Family Advent Tradition 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was out of print for a while, and I was happy to see a new publisher pick it up. Our family incorporates this into our Advent traditions, reading a section each night (as laid out in the book). At bedtime, our three kids (ages 4-9) sit while I read, and even my husband sits in (and reads to catch up if he misses a night). Each night ends on a suspenseful note, so the next evening the kids get ready for bed in record time so that we can read that night's story (finding out how last night's climax was resolved, and again ending with them wondering what will happen next). It is a family strengthening story and tradition for us. This is one in a series of three books (Bartholomew's Passage and Tabitha's Travels are the other two) which we rotate over three years, then will start the cycle over again. I bought these two copies to give as gifts.

Editorial Review:

In this widely popular, exciting story for the advent season, readers follow ten-year-old Jotham across Israel as he searches for his family. Though he faces thieves, robbers, and kidnappers, Jotham also encounters the wise men, shepherds, and innkeepers until at last he finds his way to the Savior born in Bethlehem.

Editorial Review:

For three months in the spring of 1994, the African nation of Rwanda descended into one of the most vicious and bloody genocides the world has ever seen. Immaculée Ilibagiza, a young university student, miraculously survived the savage killing spree that left most of her family, friends, and a million of her fellow citizens dead. Immaculée’s remarkable story of survival was documented in her first book, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust.

In Led By Faith, Immaculée takes us with her as her remarkable journey continues. Through her simple and eloquent voice, we experience her hardships and heartache as she struggles to survive and to find meaning and purpose in the aftermath of the holocaust. It is the story of a naïve and vulnerable young woman, orphaned and alone, navigating through a bleak and dangerously hostile world with only an abiding faith in God to guide and protect her. Immaculée fends off sinister new predators, seeks out and comforts scores of children orphaned by the genocide, and searches for love and companionship in a land where hatred still flourishes. Then, fearing again for her safety as Rwanda’s war-crime trials begin, Immaculée flees to America to begin a new chapter of her life as a refugee and immigrant—a stranger in a strange land.

With the same courage and faith in God that led her through the darkness of genocide, Immaculée discovers a new life that was beyond her wildest dreams as a small girl in a tiny village in one of Africa’s poorest countries.

It is in the United States, her adopted country, where Immaculée can finally look back at all that has happened to her and truly understand why God spared her life . . . so that she would be left to tell her story to the world.

Editorial Review:

On a brutal winter's day in 1650 in Stockholm, the Frenchman René Descartes, the most influential and controversial thinker of his time, was buried after a cold and lonely death far from home. Sixteen years later, the French Ambassador Hugues de Terlon secretly unearthed Descartes' bones and transported them to France.

Why would this devoutly Catholic official care so much about the remains of a philosopher who was hounded from country to country on charges of atheism? Why would Descartes' bones take such a strange, serpentine path over the next 350 years—a path intersecting some of the grandest events imaginable: the birth of science, the rise of democracy, the mind-body problem, the conflict between faith and reason? Their story involves people from all walks of life—Louis XIV, a Swedish casino operator, poets and playwrights, philosophers and physicists, as these people used the bones in scientific studies, stole them, sold them, revered them as relics, fought over them, passed them surreptitiously from hand to hand.

The answer lies in Descartes’ famous phrase: Cogito ergo sum—"I think, therefore I am." In his deceptively simple seventy-eight-page essay, Discourse on the Method, this small, vain, vindictive, peripatetic, ambitious Frenchman destroyed 2,000 years of received wisdom and laid the foundations of the modern world. At the root of Descartes’ “method” was skepticism: "What can I know for certain?" Like-minded thinkers around Europe passionately embraced the book--the method was applied to medicine, nature, politics, and society. The notion that one could find truth in facts that could be proved, and not in reliance on tradition and the Church's teachings, would become a turning point in human history.

In an age of faith, what Descartes was proposing seemed like heresy. Yet Descartes himself was a good Catholic, who was spurred to write his incendiary book for the most personal of reasons: He had devoted himself to medicine and the study of nature, but when his beloved daughter died at the age of five, he took his ideas deeper. To understand the natural world one needed to question everything. Thus the scientific method was created and religion overthrown. If the natural world could be understood, knowledge could be advanced, and others might not suffer as his child did.

The great controversy Descartes ignited continues to our era: where Islamic terrorists spurn the modern world and pine for a culture based on unquestioning faith; where scientists write bestsellers that passionately make the case for atheism; where others struggle to find a balance between faith and reason.
Descartes’ Bones
is a historical detective story about the creation of the modern mind, with twists and turns leading up to the present day—to the science museum in Paris where the philosopher’s skull now resides and to the church a few kilometers away where, not long ago, a philosopher-priest said a mass for his bones.

An intriguing story very well told 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Joel Rosenberg is without question a gifted story teller. In telling this tale, he weaves an intricate tapestry of international intrigue, held together by the prospect of an impending cataclysm, while using his principal character's love story as his common thread. As one who reads very little fiction, I was surprised to find that this author has done his homework. His understanding of the inner workings of governments, particularly the United States Government, and of the interactions between governments is truly impressive and serves to make this work all the more believable, especially when coupled with his firm grasp of religious prophesy and of both current and recent events and their impact on nations. Stated differently, the author takes today's world and moves it seamlessly into the near future, based on recent world events and the prophesies of the past, in a frighteningly believable way.

Having read the first eight "Left Behind" books before losing interest, I couldn't help but note the difference between the way in which the two authors approached the subject of Armageddon, and I couldn't help but wonder how this author would deal with the presumed ultimate conclusion. Of the earlier series and this book: I found the "Left Behind" books to be much more fascinating, at least in the beginning, but I found this book to have a much greater depth and broader scope, and to be much more in-line with what is happening in today's world.

What did I like best about this book? I really liked the depth of knowledge the author displayed regard religious prophesies and the workings of government. I also liked the names he had chosen for his principle characters. They seemed to mirror the actual names of "real" people in past administrations, adding realism to his story. I also appreciated the manner in which his story relentlessly moved forward with the author being very careful to ensure that no loose ends were ever left sticking out -- a truly remarkable feat. What did I like the least? It seemed to me that when the plot had thickened and "Armageddon" had been set in motion, the storyline quickly evolved into the customary Hollywood "shoot `em up" chase scenario, as the hero strove to save his one true love in the face of insurmountable obstacles. I couldn't help but wonder how much better the book might have been without the love story. I did, however, find the conclusion of the book to be quite imaginative and quite surprising. Somehow, Rosenberg managed to pull off "Armageddon" in a more than convincing manner.

Although I don't really care much for science fiction, and I kept asking myself `Why am I wasting my time by reading this?', I'll have to give this book five stars. After all, it is an intriguing story very well told.

Very hard pill to swollow 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is very informative, however, there were many times I was ready to throw this book against the wall. I did this study with my Baptist church's small group. I am a pretty liberal Christian, so I disagreed with several points. However, once I got over my initial strong negative feelings towards Nancy's views, I came to understand what she was trying to say. This provided for some heated discussions and really was one of the best small group studies I've ever been apart of, if for the debating if nothing else.

The Truth Will Set You Free! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is absolutely amazing. Nancy has a way of bringing out God's truth in an easy and non-threatening manner. When reading this book, you must be willing to look outside of the box and take a hard objective look at yourself. Women for so long have been deceivd by what Satan and the world says is right in regards to our roles and women, wives, and mothers. This book helped me to understand why being a biblical woman with an understanding and respect for the loving God that created me is so important. This book has reminded me that my role is vital to the survival of my family, and reminded me of the value of what is truly important...not materialism, not being independent or successful, not two incomes, not being too busy to enjoy our lives, but trusting in God enough to be a content woman who is not afraid to be under the headship and covering of my husband and an available mother, both physically and spiritually, for my children. This book has helped me to realize that I need to change some things in my life and that true happiness and blessings will come when I live my life submitted God's way. I got myself into this mess with work and materialism, I know with God's help I can gradually undo some of my financial mistakes that keep me from staying at home, and that I too can have a new found freedom in my life. I am sincerely looking forward to it! I look forward to simplicity in my life and can focus all of my energy on my God, my husband, and my children. God bless you! This book rocks!

Editorial Review:

The lies Christian women believe are at the root of their struggles. In Lies Women Believe, Nancy Leigh DeMoss exposes areas of deception common to many Christian women -- lies about God, sin, priorities, marriage and family, emotions, and more. She deals honestly with women's delusions and illusions and then gently leads them to the truth of God's word that leads to true freedom.

Editorial Review:

This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most beloved and important religious figures in history.

During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time.

Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood and director of the Mother Teresa Center, MOTHER TERESA brings together letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul.

Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her death, MOTHER TERESA is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life and work continue to be admired by millions of people.
