Though Thomas Jefferson is thought of first and foremost as one of America’s founding fathers, his contributions in the realm of architecture, design, and innovation were no less revolutionary. The third president created an American ideal in architecture that can be seen in numerous structures that define the landscape of his resident state of Virginia, and comprise what has come to be regarded as classic American colonial design.

THE TEXT, OF WHICH THERE IS AROUND 20 PAGES, MORE THAN ADEQUATELY SUMS UP THE THEMES AND AIMS OF THE ARTIST . THERE IS ALL YOU COULD WANT REALLY:

This is a book I picked up at the Whitney exhibit in 1997 - it's a great variety of all Keith's work. His style has varied over the years and this book does a great job showing his evolution. My favorite part is the fact that many of his pieces from his youngest years are included. It's always interesting to see where your favorite artist started.

I was not expecting anything when I started this book...frankly, I'm not sure I remember ordering it. In any event, the parallels between this graphic memoir and my own life make this book read more like an answered prayer than merely another memoir.

I take that last part back. It's not just that the author's experiences mirror my own life that makes this book notable. Rather, it's that Gregory manages to capture his own HUMANITY...without resorting to irony or the manufactured self-deprecation that seems to plague the modern memoir that makes this book so notable. I mean, finally!, someone has managed to write an HONEST memoir, one that does not require an attorney's Release of the Facts as a prologue.

"Everyday Matters" reads like a private journal, without the pretention that comes when the author knows other folks'll be reading it. Gregory's sketches are likewise uninhibited and imperfect; together, the text and illustrations create a personal, intimate environment for the reader that is inviting and judgment-free; none of the "You shouldn't have looked (though I knew you would, so I gave you my best side)" business that is the meta-text of so many memoirs, but instead offers a reassuring, "Well, that's me, hair and all...what do you think?"

A thoughtful, generous gift from Gregory to his readers.

Yes, I know it was narrowed down from 20,000 pages (what a job in itself) but its going to take me forever to finish this book. It's not a book you can breeze through. You're in for the long haul with this one. I'm not a fan of Warhol's work but I love the scene of the 60's, 70's & 80's and this book is definitely an insight to what was happening during those times in the theater & art world.

somehow the tone, pacing and repetition of names, places and events gets into you and one finds oneself unable to put this book down...I was sorry when it ended...there aren't any truly major revelations to be gleaned
from reading about the openings, parties, discos, etcetera which are featured on every page of this quite large paperback edition...it just grabs you and the narrative voice keeps flowing along...the mundane details of the day take on a new importance and the rich & famous are often skewered by the diarist's pen...highly recommended!

Frank Lloyd Wright exerted perhaps the greatest influence on twentieth century design. In a volume that continues to resonate more than seventy years after its initial publication, Frank Lloyd Wright: An Autobiography contains the master architect's own account of his work, his philosophy, and his personal life, written with his signature wit and charm.

Wright (1867-1959) went into seclusion in a Minnesota cabin to reflect and to record his life experiences. In 1932, the first edition of the Autobiography was published. It became a form of advertising, leading many readers to seek out the master architect--thirty apprentices came to live and learn at Taliesin, Wright's Wisconsin home/school/studio, under the master's tutelage. (By 1938, Taliesin West, in Arizona, was the winter location for Wright's school.)

The volume is divided into five sections devoted to family, fellowship, work, freedom, and form. Chiura Obata (1885-1975) was an artist who, amongst other things, loved Yosemite. He was born in Japan where he became well ground in traditional Japanese painting and was exposed to Western art. His personal views looked forward and became involved the progressive nihonga movement. Obata immigarated to California in 1903. He traveled up and down the coast painting and eventualy became a teacher at the University of California at Berkeley. And he discovered the beauty of Yosemite where he spent part of one summer immersed in its wonders and continually sketching and painting watercolors. This book reproduces some of that work and the woodblock prints derived from it. Also included is a brief biography, some historical background, detailed information about the woodblick prints and excerpts from his Yosemite journal.

I was suprised (maybe I shouldn't have, but I was) to learn Obata met Ansel Adams there in the early 1930s. They apparently got on well together. I'd be curious to learn more about their meeting.

A great introduction to Obata, his work and to Yosemite. Really.
