Editorial Review:

Madonna up close, by the brother who knows her better than anyone.

Christopher Ciccone's extraordinary memoir is based on his forty-seven years of growing up with, working with, and understanding the most famous woman of our time, who has intrigued, scandalized, and entertained millions for half a century.

Through most of the iconic star's kaleidoscopic career, Christopher played an important role in her life: as her backup dancer, her personal assistant, her dresser, her decorator, her art director, her tour director.

If you think you know everything there is to know about Madonna, you are wrong. Only Christopher can tell the full scale, riveting untold story behind Madonna's carefully constructed mythology, and the real woman behind the glittering façade.

From their shared Michigan childhood, which Madonna transcended, then whisked Christopher to Manhattan with her in the early eighties, where he slepton her roach-infested floor and danced with her in clubs all over town -- Christopher was with her every step of the way, experiencing her first hand in all her incarnations. The spoiled daddy's girl, the punk drummer, the raunchy Boy Toy, Material Girl, Mrs. Sean Penn, Warren Beatty's glamorous Hollywood paramour, loving mother, Mrs. Guy Ritchie, English grande dame -- Christopher witnessed and understood all of them, as his own life was inexorably entwined with that of his chameleon sister.

He tangled with a cast of characters from artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, to Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Demi Moore, and, of course, Guy Ritchie, whose advent in Madonna's life splintered the loving relationship Christopher once had with her.

The mirror image of his legendary sister, with his acid Ciccone tongue, Christopher pulls no punches as he tells his astonishing story.

Life with My Sister Madonna is the juicy, can't-put-it-down story you've always wanted to hear, as told by Madonna's younger brother.

Editorial Review:

Tales from Margaritaville (stories) and Where Is Joe Merchant? (a mystery) secured songwriter Jimmy Buffett's niche reputation as an affable, poetic beach bum. A Pirate Looks at Fifty, a travel-diary-cum-autobiography, features Buffett behind the wheel of his Grumman Albatross seaplane, safely piloting family and friends through a three-week trip around South and Central America and the Caribbean. He blends gentle scenic narration with rambling, unplugged life stories meant to convey that he's made peace with the whole aging process. For Buffett, turning 50 "can be a ball of snakes that conjures up immediate thoughts of mortality and accountability. (`What have I done with my life?') Or, it can be a great excuse to reward yourself for just getting there. (`He who dies with the most toys wins.') I instinctively chose door number two."

On this tack, Buffett plans an opulent, laid-back trip for his brood and goes into so many details about his favorite possessions (three pages on knapsacks!) that the cheerful vagabond in flip-flops is nearly eclipsed by the rich, domesticated businessman/dad he's become. In addition, stinging losses and limitations--his dad's Alzheimer's disease, his own terrifying solo plane crash in 1996--creep into his cozy yarns. Yet Buffett's infectious, grinning attitude towards life eventually finds resurrection in extended riffs on fly-fishing, solo piloting over water, and surfing. In such passages, he earns his claim to a "saline psyche," a legacy inherited from his grandfather, skipper of a five-masted barkentine that ferried lumber from New Orleans to the Caribbean. Sailing and soaring over Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific seas, Buffett looks at 50 and sees a very good life.

Chronicles What an Unrepetant Jackass Sinatra Really Was. 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a Sinatra Fan. Of his music. I never did buy into the crock of b.s. that painted him as some sort of cultural hero. And I always figured it would just be a matter of time before someone who worked this close to Sinatra would spill the beans. And it's all here. His double standards shine like the Hope Diamond. Do as I say and not as I do seems to be the recurring theme in the Frank Sinatra mantra. He demanded fidelity from his wives, but kept hookers by the dozen at any given time and paid for their abortions like they were monthly Visa bills while everyone else painted him as the picture perfect father of Nancy, Tina and Frank, Jr. His mob ties are legendary and by now general knowledge. Here we find Jacobs giving us all the juicy details. For some reason, the pay was good enough for Jacobs to tolerate Sinatra's unending racial and ethnic slurs which he apparently tossed around freely, never fearing consequence. Yet, for his entire career Sinatra was championed as a great Civil Rights pioneer. Okay, but any Civil Rights pioneer shouldn't toss the N word around so freely. It's not until the late sixties that Sinatra becomes a philanthropist of sorts to untarnish his disgusting image. Jacobs paints an interesting portrait of Old Blue Eyes as the Ultimate Paradox. I found the writing tight, honest and overall it's a book I couldn't put down once I picked it up. Unfortunately, Jacobs himself was kicked out of the Sinatra fold eventually, which makes the story all that more credible. I walked away from the book with a bevy of emotions, angry mostly, that such a talent could be such a jerk for most of his life. There were consequences for the Chairman always wanting to have it his way in his personal and professional life, and now that he's gone we may never know how it might've played out. Today I imagine Frank Sinatra would've been diagnosed as some sort of bi-polar idiot. God knows half of our musicians use that condition as an excuse for their stupid behavior. There indeed is a fine line between genius and lunacy. You'll read Jacob's memoir and walk away satisfied yet ticked off. Guaranteed.

Editorial Review:

"Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra, by former valet-aide George Jacobs with an oh-so-able assist by William Stadiem, has at least five quotable and shocking remarks about the famous on every page. The fifteen years Jacobs toiled for Frank produces a classic of its genre -- a gold-star gossip-lover's dream....

"The rest is showbiz history as it was, and only Ava Gardner, Humphrey Bogart, and Betty Bacall are spared. Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Juliet Prowse, Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Mia Farrow, Elvis Presley, Swifty Lazar, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis Jr., Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jimmy van Heusen, Edie Goetz, Peter Lawford, and all of the Kennedys come in for heaping portions of 'deep dish,' served hot. Sordid, trashy, funny, and so rat-a-tat with its smart inside info and hip instant analysis that some of it seems too good to be true....

Fascinating Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've been a Styx fan back in the late seventies early eighties and then I've lost track on any of the band's activities. I was then able to see a show during their European tour in 2005 here where I live in Switzerland. I didn't know about the change in the lineup and I absolutely had no clue about the band's internal problems. I was just happy to see them again after so many years and I was more than impressed with their preformance.

Just now I've been able to read "The Grand Delusion" and I found this book absolutely brilliant! Even though English is not my mother tongue, it only took me two nights to read the whole book. As an "outside" fan from far away, I would say that the author of this book was able to present the two sides of the story without taking one's side. Well done!

And from my point of view as a fan, I am looking forward to any future Styx Show in Europe as well as looking forward to Dennis' upcoming concerts in Germany at the end of this year. I just simply love Styx' music!

Editorial Review:

Culled from the author's personal interviews with band members, record company executives, management, friends and fans, 'The Grand Delusion' is the first biography of the superstar rock group Styx. Beginning with 'Lady' in 1974, Styx delivered a string of hits including 'Come Sail Away', 'Fooling Yourself', 'Miss America', 'Renegade', 'Blue Collar Man', 'Babe', 'The Best Of Times', 'Too Much Time On My Hands', 'Don't Let It End', 'Show Me The Way' and 'Mr. Roboto'. Styx has sold more than 35 million albums in a career that spans three decades. 'The Grand Delusion' tells the unauthorized story of one of the true superstar acts of the rock era.

Victoria Beckham is DELUDED!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 18 people found this review helpful.

This book on the surface seems to be just another quickly rushed, put together autobiography for monetary reasons alone...which is Victoria Beckham all over. This book is now a few years old and you'd be surprised that since it's publication the amount of contraditions that have been exposed about this talentless, insecure, attention hungry, mean to the bone so called "entertainer" is hilarious. If you want to be sucked into this con game then go ahead but lies, lies, lies will be all you'll be reading. A big fat 0/10 for this one.

Absolutley Fabulous 5 out of 5 stars.

Victoria Beckham's masterpiece... although in the beginning, it is a little "slow," it was still NOT a let down. i absoluetly thought this book was fantastic. even though i just found out about her, i was thrilled to read all about her. she is a wonderful inspriration to me. for those who are unsure of buying this book, don't slack... buy it immediatly. you won't regret it because you see, i don't really enjoy reading. however, i love this autobiography by victoria as well as her awesome music. i can't wait to finish this book!

Editorial Review:

From the time when, as an eight-year-old girl, she saw the movie Fame, Victoria wanted to be a star. There was a line from the title song that stayed with her-'I'm gonna live forever, I'm gonna learn how to fly'. With this extraordinary book she gives us the chance to follow her on her journey from lonely teenager to international star; to fly alongside her.

Loved the book- quite interesting lives they have had. Not all happy childhoods. But the book is great. Makes you love them and their music even more. Lots of great pictures and hearing their lives through their own words is brilliant.

Editorial Review:

At sixteen, Lance Bass received a phone call from Justin Timberlake that would change his life forever. Soon after, he left his small-town home in Clinton, Mississippi, to join an emerging musical group called *NSYNC. Two years later *NSYNC was inspiring Beatles-esque mania around the world, becoming the face of the new MTV generation, and earning the all-time record for most album sales in a single day (more than one million) and in a single week for No Strings Attached.

He's remained in the spotlight ever since, and here he talks in depth for the first time about his childhood, his astonishing experiences as a young man and Christian growing up in one of the biggest bands in the world, his shock and frustration at the band's eventual dissolution, and his subsequent career, including his four months in Russia, training to become a cosmonaut.

He also frankly discusses life as a gay man -- his first same-sex relationship at twenty-one, his struggle to keep his sexuality hidden from *NSYNC's fans in case it jeopardized the band's success, and the true circumstances that led to his decision to publicly come out at the age of twenty-seven.

Full of fascinating behind-the-scenes lore and revealing insights from a pop star who, until now, has been notoriously private, Out of Sync is the book that millions of fans have been waiting for.

interesting and full-covered biography 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

this is a quite full and interestnig biography concerning the first years of the PJ history also relating to the beginning of this (and other) seattle bands, which is of particular value to grunge fans i think, because this is now part of the rock n roll history!
the book gave me a human description of the band's mates and i was interested to read about the abruzzese period and the way it ended.
so i think the PJ story written in this book is a good description of the direction the band took since 1996 til today. i was also interested about the vedder's personal life chapters, but eventually i am not sure whether it is a good idea revealing really personal facts, but anyway it helps understanding vedder personnality , phylosophy and music.
Enjoy it, it is easy to read, and excuse my english faults.

Editorial Review:

More than any other band, Pearl Jam embodies the alternative style that dominates rock today. From their early days as fame-ducking grunge pioneers, through their headline-making battle with Ticketmaster, to their current status as self-assured survivors, Five Against One brings to life Pearl Jam's tumultuous ascent to superstardom in rich detail. A compelling portrait of the band's elusive leader Eddie Vedder and family photos never seen before by the public make this a must-have for every Pearl Jam fan.

Typical... 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This bio is typical of Malins' work. The Depeche Mode book he wrote a few years ago followed much the same formula : Many early ( read : unknown and/or long forgotten ) associates and collaborators are quoted, each members' background is thoroughly examined and the road to glory is meticulously detailed. The first five years of Duran Duran takes up about half the book. Then the closer we get to the present, the faster the facts fly by, and the slimmer the details become. Approximately twenty years is covered in the last half of the book. Events are glossed over, many which are definately worth more than the little mention they get. And most all the quotes from band members are taken from other, previously published sources. Don't get me wrong. I've been a big fan of this band since 1982 and I enjoyed this book. But, as others have noted, it very simply left me wanting more. I suppose an authorized bio will clear all that up. In the meantime, Notorious very nearly satisfies.

Editorial Review:

In the last couple of years, Duran Duran has scooped MTV’s Lifetime Achievement Award, played sold-out stadium gigs in America, Britain, and Japan, and enjoyed feature coverage in Rolling Stone and Vogue. Not bad for a band who were at the height of their fame in the 1980s. This reference offers a look at their remarkable career, including exclusive interviews and photos.

Editorial Review:

More than 30 years after their stunning victory at the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo" in 1974, ABBA’s popularity remains undimmed. From disco classics like "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia" to ballads like "The Winner Takes It All," the group’s musical legacy endures, thanks in part to covers by artists ranging from U2 to Madonna. ABBA: The Scrapbook gives a complete history of one of the best-loved pop groups of all time: the early days in Sweden, relationships within the band, their triumph at Eurovision, the group’s outrageous 1970s fashions, the making of ABBA: The Movie, the eventual break-up, and their continuing influence on pop music. The book also covers the hugely successful stage musical Mamma Mia! and its upcoming film adaptation. Fully illustrated throughout with rare photos of the band and memorabilia, ABBA: The Scrapbook charts the amazing story of how an obscure Swedish quartet conquered the world.
