Editorial Review:

In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.

While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before.

I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness."
Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape

A ROMANTIC TALE ... THAT'S PURE MAGIC! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Could it be MAGIC...

For most people falling in love and trusting your heart to another can be a somewhat risky thing to do, though usually well worth the gamble. For Lady Kathleen MacDavid falling in love can be a hazardous venture, or to be more precise, a truly perilous one for the gentleman she falls in love with. But then, most people don't have fate, destiny AND a 500 year old curse hanging over their heads. Now, the lovely Lady Kathleen considered herself to be an intelligent, responsible and reasonably sensible woman--no simple thing when you were raised in a family of rather impractical women who dabbled in the mystic arts; and believed in things like spells, charms, superstitions and magic--Oh, and of course, the family CURSE.

According to old family legend, it all started hundreds of years ago with two feuding border families--an English one and Kathleen's Scottish ancestors, who, in order to end the hostility and violence were to be joined thru marriage. But somehow the marriage never took place and an old woman who'd lost most of her family in the warfare had put a curse on both families--declaring they be united in marriage--or terrible, dreadful things would happen and both family lines would die out. They'd had 500 years to break the curse, but apparently no one had; and the deadline--autumn of 1854--was fast approaching.

At first Kathleen thought the whole thing was utter nonsense, but after years of untimely deaths, a string inexplicable tragedies and the peculiar inability of perfectly healthy members of her family to reproduce--leaving Kathleen as the last of her line--had forced her to become a believer. So to break the curse and save her family, she was willing to travel to England and sacrifice herself on the alter of matrimony to--the last male descendent of the English family--Oliver Leighton, 12th Earl of Norcroft.

Now, would it be too much to hope that Lord Norcroft believed in magic as well???

*****

I'm always a little nervous when I read the final book in any series because honestly--due to high expectations--a last book can sometimes make or break a series for the reader. So I'm thrilled to say that I thought SEDUCTION OF A PROPER GENTLEMAN was an absolutely PERFECT ending to Victoria Alexander's excellent "Last Man Standing" quartet.

From the charming and "magically" mysterious prologue, to the incredibly fitting conclusion of the "tontine", and the utterly delightful glimpse into the HEA of the characters that I've come to love--thirty years into their future--in a wonderful epilogue ... I loved-loved-loved Oliver and Kate's enchanting, funny and romantic tale. It was pure MAGIC!

I thought Kate was the ideal heroine for Oliver; they had great chemistry together and both were kindhearted, amiable, affectionate and "family oriented". I had loved Oliver throughout the series; he was a dependable and honorable man--the most sensible of all the "guys"--and just an all around nice fellow who very much deserved to find love. Though I definitely enjoyed the irony of Oliver winning the bet--he was unashamedly a romantic and the only one not running away from love, so of course, he would be the last to find it. And I was very happy with how Oliver's character evolved in the story, the author allowed him to be more lighthearted, playful, charmingly flirtatious and sexy. And he was made to endure some unpredictable and hilarious mishaps as well.

Though, aside from the terrific humor and delightful absurdity of the "curse" I felt there was a much deeper--dare I say profound--theme running below the lighthearted surface of the story... Reminding us that BAD things do happen to GOOD people and usually with no rhyme or reason to them. And to survive the sorrowful times of your life, or make the terrible times bearable, you need to trust in your inner strength--and you absolutely must have HOPE in your heart.

I felt Kate was that kind of person. She was a strong, courageous, and remarkable heroine because no matter what life threw at her she kept her sense of humor, and she kept picking herself up and carrying on. I loved her--and she's become one of my all time favorite heroines. I also thought the amnesia scenario matched the storyline so well; I love the whole--chance to start over/start fresh--thing. Kate's struggle to come to terms with her loss of memory and sense of being "lost" added another poignant layer to the storyline. She had to deal with a roller-coaster of emotions and I couldn't help but feel her frustrations and fears. Yet, she handled losing her memory remarkably well, much better than I think I would have been able to cope. Her self-reflections were full of tender moments that tugged at the heartstrings and also several laugh out loud moments; such as when she was assembling a list of what she perceived to be her newly discovered character flaws.

I love romantic comedies and I've been a big fan of Victoria Alexander's historical romances for several years. I believe she has a genuine gift for--lighthearted--romantic storytelling that is complemented by the lustrous comedic "voice" of a true humorist. Her stories are passionate--unquestionably--optimistic and entertaining, offering her reader's sophisticated, intelligent and insightful observations on life, relationships and love. All of her characters are compelling and realistically drawn--coming complete with all the flaws, endearing quirks and eccentricities that make them unique, and distinctly human. Ms Alexander's books are my comfort reads because they never fail to bring a smile to my face, lift my spirits and just make me happy... I can't ask for more then that from any author. If you're a HOPEFUL romantic like I am and you're looking for a story to make you feel happy inside--I highly recommend picking up a copy of this heartwarming story.

I also recommend the other Victoria Alexander's other books in this series ... Let It Be Love (prequel) A Little Bit Wicked (Last Man Standing, Book 1) What a Lady Wants (Last Man Standing, Book 2) Secrets of a Proper Lady (Last Man Standing, Book 3)

Editorial Review:

To break a centuries-old curse, beautiful, headstrong Lady Kathleen MacDavid knows she must ignore every rule of propriety by seducing—and marrying—the Earl of Norcroft. So she sets off for London, braving scandal and ruin to achieve her goal . . . until a crazy bump on the head makes her forget nearly everything.

The thrill of winning a bet—that he'd be the last of his set to wed—hasn't eased the earl's pain of losing his friends to marriage. Still, he'd be willing to settle down if he could meet someone worthy of his love—and desire. But he has met no such woman, until Kathleen is brought to him. Suspicious of her motives, he's determined to resist her seductive ways. But sometimes even the most proper gentleman finds it expedient to act improperly . . .

Whedom continues to impress me with beautiful writing that tugs at my heartstrings and at the same time has me on the edge of my seat. The artwork is beautiful for a comic and captures moments in time that I thought could only be done on film. Both collections are well worth it to any fan of the series.

No Future For You (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, Volume 2)
as a fan of the tv show, i was intregued at the prospect of a comic book of buffy and i was pleasantly surprized. well written, well drawn, intriging stories and i can almost hear their voices as i read it. well done, all around.

Editorial Review:

Eisner award-winning writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina) tackles Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight with "No Future for You." When a rogue debutant Slayer begins to use her power for evil, Giles is forced to recruit the rebellious Faith, who isn't exactly known for her good deeds. Giles offers Faith a clean slate if she can stop this snooty Slayer from wreaking total havoc - that is, if Buffy doesn't beat her to it. Georges Jeanty (The American Way) remains at the top of his game as series artist, and Whedon stays on as "Executive Producer" in this direct follow-up to Season Seven of the smash-hit TV series.

The book was excellent, however, Amazon sold it to me for $4.99 and on the cover it was only $2.99. I am disappointed in Amazon.

This is an author that gets better with age... 4 out of 5 stars.

I started the Drake series in the middle with Oceans of Fire and then read on with Hannah's story. I thought it was a mistake starting in the middle, but after reading the first in the series I am not sure if I would have continued with the remaining books. I really enjoyed some of the later books in the Drake series, but the first was somewhat disappointing. It could be the fact that the book was rushed and crammed into 100 pages or so. For one, I thought Sarah embraced the prophecy a little too easily for someone who wanted so hard to avoid it. Two, I think Damon coped well with losing the full capabilities of his leg and hip. Personally, I would have been a little self-conscious about myself. If I was a man trying to measure up to a woman as independent and strong as Sarah I would have found that limp a little more of a problem for Damon than it was. I still think in the end he could have gotten over his pride to open up to Sarah I just thought that it happened a little too easily. Suspense is half the fun in these books and it didn't have much of it in this particular book. Three, I thought the relationship just happened so quickly even if it was a fated romance it could have developed a little more. I loved the way that I could still see the love-hate relationship between Hannah and Jonas even in the first of the series. It was a quick read and it gave me some background info on the Drakes so I do not regret reading it, but I do wish that it was longer and had more suspense.

Editorial Review:

New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan presents the story of Sarah, the eldest of the extraordinary-and magical-Drake sisters, now rewritten and expanded, in this very special collector's edition.

"Sarah Drake has come home." Ever since Damon Wilder sought refuge in Sea Haven, he's heard the same breathless rumor pass the lips of nearly every local in the sleepy coastal town. Even the wind seems to whisper her name-a reverie so powerfully suggestive that it carries the curious Damon to Sarah's cliff-top home, and seeks to shelter him there. But Damon has not arrived alone. A killer has tracked him to Sea Haven, and into the shadows of Drake House. But Sarah has her own secrets, and danger-as well as a desire more urgent than either has ever known-is just a whisper away...

Editorial Review:

From the #1 bestselling author, a stunning new novel of secrets, mayhem, and murder.

FBI Special Agent Jackson Crowne is flying his Cessna over the Appalachians, with a very important passenger: renowned psychiatrist Dr. Timothy MacLean; their destination is Washington, D.C. Upon their arrival, the FBI will protect the doctor—and ascertain just who wants him dead.

But they don’t make it.

In San Francisco, married FBI Special Agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock take an early morning phone call from their supervisor, Jimmy Maitland. Maitland received a Mayday from Jackson in the mountains near Parlow, Kentucky, and sends Savich and Sherlock to see what’s happened.

Agent Crowne is able to bring his plane down in a narrow valley and haul the unconscious Dr. MacLean from the burning wreckage before it explodes. Their crash is witnessed by Rachael Abbott, a young woman on the run after the mysterious death of her father. When Savich and Sherlock arrive on the scene, they find Jackson and Rachael in the Parlow clinic and Dr. MacLean comatose in the local hospital, prognosis unknown. What they do know frightens them: Dr. MacLean was recently diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia, and in the months prior to the crash his behavior had become erratic and alarmingly uninhibited, his ability to maintain doctor-patient confidentiality badly compromised. With a patient list made up of Washington movers and shakers, MacLean’s role as a keeper of secrets is jeopardized as well. Is there someone out there so desperate that they’d kill the doctor for what he knows? It is up to Jackson, Savich, and Sherlock to find out—no matter the cost.

Katherine the Great 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I first read this book about 25 years ago. Recently a friend discussed how she just loved the story, and that's what stirred me to find the book again. The choice of Dante Rosetti's painting, Veronica Veronese, for the cover image of the latest edition is wonderful.

Anya Seton was gifted at her crafting of words. Often I find myself rereading sentences that seem unusual and beautiful. It's an enjoyable way to travel back in time. Reading a history book can be interesting, but an historical novel puts a face and character to the names that usually get only a brief mention.

Editorial Review:

This classic romance novel tells the true story of the love affair that changed history—that of Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the ancestors of most of the British royal family. Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the king’s son, falls passionately in love with the already married Katherine. Their well-documented affair and love persist through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption. This epic novel of conflict, cruelty, and untamable love has become a classic since its first publication in 1954.

Not the Nora Roberts I thought she was 1 out of 5 stars.

I've read quite a bit of Nora Roberts. Not every one but many. I loved High Noon and the sisters trilogy so I though I'd pick this up. I read it in just a few days although I did have to re-read some parts as it was sloppy and mishmash in spots. I thought she could have done a much better job. I think she had a deadline to make. Nora, Dear!! Please give me QUALITY reading!

Awesome author! 5 out of 5 stars.

Entertaining 4 out of 5 stars.

I became hooked on the Southern Vampire series the moment I picked up the first book. This book was good. I would go so far as to say it was great, but it was not fabulous. I've come to expect fabulous from this author. Not enough appearances by our favorite vampires. I felt as though I had missed reading a book in the series.

Dead as a Doornail 5 out of 5 stars.

I laughed my head off. This is great entertainment. Charlaine Harris is a hoot and I am looking forward to more. thank you.

I love Sookie! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I listened to the audio version of this book and I have to say that Johanna Parker (the reader) adds a lot! She has created a Sookie with the soft southern accent we might expect and with just the right amount of sassiness to truly bring her (and her friends) to life. The books and the plots are superficially pretty lightweight. But I just adore the character of Sookie. She is so real and she makes me laugh and cry. There's some profound wisdom in there, too. The author doesn't hit you over the head with it, but it sneaks in repeatedly - often as Sookie is thinking through things like discrimination and friendship. I owe a big thanks to another reviewer who, like me, did not appreciate "Undead and Unwed" but suggested Sookie Stackhouse as an alternative. Charlaine Harris and Johanna Parker are an awesome team and I'm taking 2 more of these on vacation with me!

Editorial Review:

When Sookie's brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population-and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now, Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks, unless the killer decides to find her first.
