Editorial Review:

Buffettology is the first book from someone who, thanks to personal and professional access to Warren Buffett, has been uniquely positioned to learn from the master. Mary Buffett had the privilege -- during her twelve years as his daughter-in-law -- of sharing some of this very private genius's informal discussions of his investing philosophy, and now she shares some of her invaluable observations with us.

This breakthrough book offers a full-blown explanation of how Buffett uses Business Perspective Investing as a wealth-building tool. His strategy is not so much to "pick stock" but to search for and invest in excellent companies whose intrinsic value and potential earnings he can reasonably predict through a series of steps we learn about throughout the book.

Citing many fascinating case histories and examples, Buffettology shows us what kinds of companies Buffett looks for and why, and which he avoids and why. The authors show us the mathematical models and equations Buffett uses to determine the basic value and earnings potential of his final choices (and the right price to pay, for which he is willing to wait). We also learn how with the aid of an inexpensive, widely available handheld calculator, anyone can do similar equations.

In addition to providing such in-depth analysis, this book offers two more firsts. One is a chapter on Buffett's rarely discussed and extremely successful arbitrage operations. The book gives us the arbitrage equation he uses to determine the positions he should take. The other is a comprehensive list and brief analysis of fifty-four companies in which Buffett has invested and the authors believe he continues to follow, many of which have never before been publicly identified as "Buffett companies."

Great book. Just one comment. A lot of the text in this book is identical to the text in Tax Deductions for Professionals. You don't need both books; choose one.

Great Inro into Real Estate 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book discribes how investors can make money in the tax lien market. Tax liens are those liens attached to your deed when you do not pay your property taxes. Since your municpality needs these taxes to pay for service (fire, police, etc.) and they do not need the real estate, they either sell the liens or the actual real estate (not really covered in this book) at an auction. The investor needs to wait a period of time (Each State is Differnt) and then the investor forcloses on the defaltee either requiring the tax payer to pay cash or take possesion of the real estate to do what he wishes with it.

The four sectons of the book explain the basics of these liens, what they are, how to get them, who to contact, what to look for, where they are held and the basics of how to redeam them. There is also a reference on the individual state laws on how each state handles the leins and what the investor must do.

Mr. Moskowitz gives plenty of exapmples of which states has tax liens (Certificates) and which ones have tax deeds (Real Estate). He explains the pros and cons of each and he explains how to take advantage of each situation.

For the small investor though, this can cause some problems as your cash is tied up for a period time and you may have to foreclose on the tax payer when then do not pay. If you need the money and there are no current markets to to sell off your certificate if the need arrises. If you have enough money to part with, investing in these vehicles are safe and secure and you can get some hefty profits from them if you are willing to deal with som small problems.

He reminds you that these profits are guarrenteed by the government and are perfectly legal.

This book helps you understand the concept of these investments, but you need to do more research before you start. Are you willing to evict someone when there term is up. Many states allow tax payers to pay thier taxes after the have sold it you with out owing you interest (generally with in a certain time frame). These and other questions needs to be ask as you read the book.

Mr. Moskowitz does a great job at explaining everything except how to get tax Deed (real estate). This is recommened as a starting point for anyone who want to get involved in this type of investment. Further reading and inquiry of others who actually use these investments are still needed.

    Editorial Review:

A comprehensive guide to personal finance and investment explains how to achieve the maximum financial yield in a time of low interest rates and a weak stock market, discussing such options as tax lien certificates and their benefits. 50,000 first printing.

Not the Disneyland Version of US History 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Gore Vidal writes historical fiction with a sharp eye toward historical accuracy, but with the freedom granted by the genre to present history with a viewpoint. Aaron Burr provides an ample tableau for the talents of Vidal at the top of his game. Burr lived through the Revolution, serving briefly on Washington's staff and later with Benedict Arnold at Quebec. He soon became seriously involved in New York state politics and eventually became Jefferson's vice-president.

Burr seems to have always turned up in the middle of some controversy. He was nearly elected President instead of Jefferson due to a quirk in the electoral system of the day. He killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel while still VP and fled south and west to avoid prosecution in New Jersey. Jefferson soon charged him with treason for an alleged plot to separate the western states from the US. Burr was acquitted in a trial presided over by Chief Justice John Marshall. The reader meets lesser known characters such as James Wilkinson and Harman Blennerhassett among many others.

The story is told through the device of Burr writing his memoirs over a period of several years commencing in 1833 with the aid of Charles Schuyler, the book's only fictional character (aside from brief appearances by William de la Touche Clancey. This device allows Vidal to move back and forth between the Republic's early days and the end of the Jackson presidency. In the latter period the reader meets Matty Van Buren, the famed New York editor William Leggett, the corrupt collector of the NY ports Sam Swartout, and revisits Andrew Jackson.

Vidal presents the tale from his subject's viewpoint, one which is naturally quite favorable to Burr and somewhat at odds with the standard view in regard especially to the `Burr Conspiracy'. Thomas Jefferson particularly comes out poorly in this telling as does Washington. `Burr' was one of six works in what became Vidal's American Chronicles Series (Lincoln, 1876, Empire, Hollywood, and Washington, DC). I can also recommend Lincoln: A Novel and 1876 (Modern Library) to the reader (I've not yet read the others). Gore Vidal's `Burr' is a riveting ride through the early days of the Republic. Highest recommendation.

    Editorial Review:

"An extraordinarily intelligent and entertaining novel!"
    NEWSWEEK
Brilliantly realized, enormously readable, Gore Vidal's #1 best seller paints a fascinating portrait of Aaron Burr, who lived out his long life partly as a suspected traitor and partly as one of the most heroic and colorful of the founding fathers.
A fictional memoir based on actual facts, BURR describes the early struggles and endless intrigues of the United States. Vidal writes with so much drama and vigor that history comes alive, and the concerns of a new nation read like today's headlines.

What the IRS doesn't tell us, Ernst & Young does.

Year after year, The Ernst & Young Tax Guide hits national best-seller lists and garners rave reviews. The most user-friendly, most current guide available to preparing your own tax return, this essential resource contains all the information readers need to save on their taxes. The accessible format walks you step-by-step through the daunting filing process, with sample tax forms and schedules demonstrating how to fill out a tax return line by line. As the only guide that provides complete coverage of the new tax law provisions, it's no wonder The New York Times praises it as "the top choice among popular tax books." The Ernst & Young Tax Guide is really two books in one. The first is the official IRS tax guide, Your Federal Income Tax, updated by E&Y to take into account developments in 2007. The second book is the Ernst & Young guide offering comments, explanations, and tax-saving tips on what the IRS tells us--and doesn't tell us. These two books have been combined in one easy-to-read volume to provide taxpayers with the most well-rounded and comprehensive tax guide on the market.

simplistic 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Not very well written. Its is simplistic & somewhat condescending.
Later chapters tend to repeat basic concepts covered earlier without expanding upon the issues. There are more knowlegable authors out there that are refreshing and can effectively advance the your knowledge.

Information Packed Book! Lots of Great Tips 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was excellent! I learned quite a lot from reading it and hope to really apply what I have learned to my finances. It was jam packed with helpful tips and ideas on how to take full advantage of tax loopholes. I would recommend this to any small business owner!!

Straightforward information on common tax risks and opportunities 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This clearly written book offers a handy guide to tax strategy for the rich and for those who hope to be rich. Author Diane Kennedy, a certified public accountant, provides basic information on common tax risks and opportunities. Without using burdensome jargon, she explains the fundamentals of financial reports and record keeping. Her approach is commonsense and straightforward she doesn't make outrageous promises or exotic, inapplicable recommendations. The title is slightly misleading. This book is not really about loopholes, but rather about sound planning and management - especially for business owners. It does get into the minutiae of tax law, which is subject to change, so some of the details may have a short shelf life, and much of the advice will have little applicability outside of the United States. Nonetheless, we recommend this basic guide to anyone who needs a fundamental introduction to personal financial and tax management in the U.S.

    Editorial Review:

In easy-to-follow and straightforward language, this guide teaches business owners how to pay only those taxes which are due to the government - and save the rest. By learning the rules that the wealthy play by, business owners can take advantage of legal tax deductions to cut their annual tax payments.

Great help for Schedule C and 8829 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm working on my schedule C and 8829 and every so often I get to a question I don't understand. I go to the IRS instructions and their web site and it's as clear as used motor oil. It's enough to drive you insane.

Picked up this book and it's spelled out in plain English. No need to read a passage five times to understand.

As others have stated, you need this BEFORE you start your business and you need it a year before you do your taxes. In other words, it will help you along with your 2006 return and you can learn from it on how to do a better job for 2007 by keeping the right documents and receipts in order to get even bigger legitimate deductions. I know I wish I'd had this book last year!

With that said, this is not a line-by-line assistant for Schedule C and the 8829 which I wish it was at times. There are just times when the IRS uses a specific term on a specific line and it would help to have a layman's definition at hand. I didn't get that with this book. Nonetheless, it's been one of the best sources of information I've found for doing one's self employment tax forms.

    Editorial Review:

Tax deductions are essential to any business, but even more so when your office is also your home. You can spend thousands on an accountant -- or you can turn to Home Business Tax Deductions and do it yourself!

Home Business Tax Deductions will help you write off:

*your home office *start-up expenses *operating expenses *vehicles *travel *entertainment *meals *health insurance *medical bills *inventory *equipment *and much more

Home Business Tax Deductions is comprehensive yet easy to read, with many interesting and relevant examples. It also provides basic information on how different business structures are taxed and how deductions work. Best of all, it keeps you on the straight and narrow, helping you avoid run-ins with the IRS.
