Editorial Review:

The final word on what traits make for highly successful managers—and a detailed explanation of how to identify potential standout performers.

Executive Intelligence is about the substance behind great leadership. Inspired by the work of Peter Drucker and Jim Collins, Justin Menkes set out to isolate the qualities that make for the 'right' people. Drawing on his background in psychology and bolstered by interviews with accomplished CEOs, Menkes paints the portrait of the ideal executive.

In a sense, Menkes's work reveals an executive IQ—the cognitive skills necessary in order to excel in senior management positions. Star leaders readily differentiate primary priorities from secondary concerns; they identify flawed assumptions; they anticipate the different needs of various stakeholders and how they might conflict with one another; and they recognise the underlying agendas of individuals in complex exchanges.

Weaving together research, interviews and the results of his own proprietary testing, Menkes exposes one of the great fallacies of corporate life, that hiring and promotion are conducted on a systematic or scientific basis that allows the most accomplished to rise to their levels of optimal responsibility.

Finally, Menkes is a passionate advocate for finding and employing the most talented people, especially those who may have been held back by external assumptions.

Plus Sizes Should Get This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for fashion advice for bigger women. It's hard to find style information for my size (22W)and Ms. Moultry's book gave me ideas for dressing using clothes that are already in my own closet. I particularly love the chapter about ideas for women with a sort of apple shape, since this is what my body looks like. Would recommend to any woman over size 12, looking for fashion advice.

Handy guide that is simple and easy to implement 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book from everything to the "oh yea, I know better than to do that, I needed the reminder" to "I never thought of it that way" when it comes to fashion tips for plus sized women. Definitely a valuable item to have sitting in or near your closet to refer to when needed.

Editorial Review:

For so long, there has been little in the way of fashion advice and education for full-figured women. Additionally, fun, sexy, trends were not made for women of size, relegating us to clothing that was much frumpier than fashionable. This book is designed to put plus-size women back in front of the crowd with colorful tunics, sexy wrap dresses, sophisticated denim, bright accessories, the hottest footwear and a revamped outlook on why being a plus-sized woman means you have the ability to be stylish, bold and fabulous. Take the tips in this book and apply them to your wardrobe.

The ultimate guide to looking your best... 5 out of 5 stars.
55 of 55 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to making a positive impact through appearance, this is your book. I am a recruiter with a Fortune 100 company in the US, and a professional image consultant recommended this book to me when I originally began my position. As a person who was looking for solid guidelines around professional dressing, as well as a reference for others who are looking to improve their appearance, I have found no other book to be comparable.

There are many aspects which make this book such an important resource for professionals:

1. The author provides specific guidelines around what items should be in a professional wardrobe, even going as far as to outline what quantities are particularly helpful of each piece of clothing.

2. The book is filled with "before and after" pictures, which allow the reader to see first-hand how the author's recommendations can make a startling appearance alteration.

3. To reflect the variety of workplace formality levels, there are six levels of workplace dress covered in the chapters. For those people who work for companies that have never successfully defined "Casual Friday", this book gives a lot of great hints of how to dress casual but still remain professional.

4. Two separate chapters outline accessories and generic grooming guidelines, and I have only found those hints in this particular guideline book.

5. For people looking to improve their wardrobe on a limited budget or a first job out of school, the author does not suggest spending a fortune on designer clothing. Rather, she suggests some key pieces to acquire first, and then others that can be obtained after your finances begin to improve.

Overall, I see the negative impact every day in my position from candidates who do not make the extra effort to go from "dressing up" to "looking professional". I strongly suggest that you make the $15 investment in this book, since it could help you to acquire the high paying career of your dreams!

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It offers a lot of tips and suggestions for dressing appropriately in the workplace. I liked the fact that the author offers suggestions for dressing professionally on a budget and takes a realistic approach for the average woman.

Editorial Review:

Author Joyce Nelson Shellhart explains how to dress for that crucial interview, what kinds of clothes are appropriate during the job, and how to dress in ways that will pay off in promotions. Based on personal experience, the book presents 18 "Secrets to Success" appropriate for every woman, regardless of education, ethnicity, or economic background. Topics include how to tell day-wear from date-wear; shopping with — or without — a budget; clothes that flatter a full figure; developing a personal sense of style; optimizing accessories; organizing the closet; blending ethnic attire into the workplace; and more. Beck’s artwork further enhances this entertaining book.

What's the big secret ? 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 51 people found this review helpful.

I think we all inately know this subject well and I was interested that it never comes up in corporate policymaking when addressing other discrimination factors such as race and gender. Appearance is subjective, but also universal. In one company session on diversity a young, very attractive, intelligent and personable black woman taught. She seemed overly enthusiastic and reveled in the fact that everyone deserves equal and fair treatment (no argument!) She had obviously overcome so much in her professional career, being young, black, female, and admittedly poor in childhood. But she completely ignored what we all seemed to recognize and that not one person said a word about, the fact that she was a very beautiful person and that this might have something to do with success (certainly not the only factor). I was too intimidated to bring it up, but it catalyzed me to do a net search and see what I could find on the subject. This book is very good and puts down into words the very thoughts that we all live and act out in our daily interelations but may not own up to. I have found several new and unexpected things in the book as well as some excellent summations of my own thinking. It is well organized and thorough, easy to understand, and not technical. My objective in reading it was to help organize my own thoughts and develop an approach to improve dating and interpersonal relationships (I'm recently divorced and rated myself as average in attractiveness). The book is well worth the effort to obtain it. Also, the next time I am required to endure another company class on diversity I will have the courage to ask why the factor of appearance has not been brought up for discussion knowing there is a credible reference available.

Editorial Review:

At last...a revealing book at how your appearance may determine your success and happiness in life. Jeffes helps readers to determine if they have been discriminated against because of their appearance. Appearance is Everything will enable you to critically examine how your appearance may influence relationships, academic performance, and career advancement.

Build your CEO Capital 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

In CEO Capital, Leslie Gaines-Ross has written an insightful and enlightening book for those who want to increase the positive visibility and reputation of their CEO. It is a surprise to this reviewer that more books have not been written on the subject of how to master the art of building your reputation when both your own personal future and corporate future may be resting on it.

The celebrity hungry society of today looks to corporate movers and shakers especially the CEO as icons of a particular company. Think about Lee Iacocca, Jack Welch, Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to mention just a few. How much of your opinion of these companies (and notice I don't even have to mention which companies they run/ran) is based on your perceived image of the CEO? The phrase `you are your company' has never been more true, especially in the post Enron & Arthur Anderson world. How has your opinion of Enron changed now that you know more about Jeff Skilling and Andrew Fastow? Despite any fraud at Enron being committed by the few and not the masses of the organization, our entire perception of Enron has shifted to the iconic few.

Part I of CEO Capital is a contextual look at CEO capital: what it is, where it comes from and how it can be built. Gaines-Ross draws us in by looking at the CEO Effect by citing some examples as far back as 1985 starting with Roberto Goizueta, then CEO of Coca-Cola and the whole `New Coke' revolt, that could have been a fatal disaster for the company. But Goizueta, trading on his CEO capital, not only avoided being removed but was able to bring the company back even stronger.

Part II is most interesting and is centered on the five stages postulated in the CEO capital model which take you by the hand, and step by step go through best practices (ed: hate that term but in this situation it is apt), principles and linkages to factors affecting the building of CEO capital. As the book says, `the reader may be left with the impression that the stages read almost like a manual on how to lead a company. This perception is quite acceptable and entirely reasonable because nothing is more conducive to building CEO capital than building a strong, high-performing company. Any similarity between the two is entirely intentional.' Which is indeed how it reads, but in doing so, broadens the scope of the content to be relevant to a wider audience of business managers and executives who may not be leading Fortune 500 type companies (yet!). In fact, they may be the very leaders who will gain most from this book, since they are not too arrogant to learn and may gain the most from any capital building opportunities presented to them.

Chapters in the book include guidance on the Countdown (the time before the CEO-elect takes office), the First One Hundred days and the First Year, and then of course the second year in office which is always much harder than the first.

Gaines-Ross has written a truly pioneering work - overall an excellent book on a little-written about subject. The book is practically written and you should not let its somewhat `user manual' style detract you from putting its advice into action. Recommended for CEOs and CEOs to-be of all sized companies, as well as other corporate officers and marketing/PR professionals who may guide along the process.

Editorial Review:

The reputations of CEOs and the companies they lead are deeply and inextricably linked. The manner in which the media, investors, analysts, employees, and even the general public perceive a chief executive has tremendous influence over the company's prosperity, standing, and destiny.

In CEO Capital, Dr. Gaines-Ross describes in practical terms the strategies to follow--and the obstacles to avoid--so that CEOs can enhance the reputation of their company during the five stages of their tenure.

CEO Capital is the only book that provides these guidelines and isolates best practices for CEOs as they navigate their way through their first 100 days to their last 100 hours.

About the author: Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross is chief knowledge and research officer at Burson-Marsteller, a leading global communications consultancy with more than 1,600 employees worldwide. Previously, she served as Fortune's communications and marketing director.

All the info you need, but a bit disorganized 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book if you need to design a card, or want to update your card. All the information you need to create a card is here, but the book is in severe need of editing. At 480+ pages, it is far too long, and often diverges into completely new territory like how to handle a trade show. There is even a huge section on a little boy's battle with cancer. While I am all for charity (it's my business) I found this section very distracting in the book. Much of the book is repetitive also, and disconnected (How does "Jazz Up Company Cards" on page 337 follow from Identifying Yourself At A Meeting and Your Self-Inrtoduction on Page 336??) While the author warns against racial or ethnic blunders, she commits a huge one herself in describing a Scottish Telegraph game, which takes a swipe at Scottish people. The Pros? Has lots of information, lots of examples of business cards (though none in color oddly enough), a fantastic reference guide at the back of the book, with all kinds of useful information, a glossary which I found most helpful. My favorite section is on conducting business and presenting your card to foreigners.Grant also has a relaxed, friendly style of writing. The Cons: poorly organized, poorly edited, too long. I would like to see the book only half that size, with color examples. Grant writes some terrific text about other aspects of business (sales meetings, trade shows) but they belong in another book, not here. I do hope she keeps on writing, but more concisely, as she recommends herself for business!
