Editorial Review:

"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -- Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -- Harvey McKay, author of “How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive”

What is that magic quality makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover!) In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their "Midas touch?"

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone (Contemporary Books, October 2003) Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques-- she takes the reader from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed book you’ll find:

  • 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
  • 14 ways to master small talk, "big talk," and body language
  • 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
  • 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
  • 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
  • 9 ways to feed someone's ego (and know when NOT to!)
  • 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
  • 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
  • 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive

In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you'll remember them when you really need them, including: "Rubberneck the Room," "Be a Copyclass," "Come Hither Hands," “Bare Their Hot Button,” “The Great Scorecard in the Sky," and "Play the Tombstone Game,” for big success in your social life, romance, and business.

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter)is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

Essential resource for top MBA programs 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is the bible for getting into the top MBA schools. I am currently in the process of applying to some of the top schools and have talked to a lot of current and recent grads, all of whom swear by this book. It walks you through all the steps required and the right way to approach the situation. I had my first round interview last week and knowing how the different schools differ in their approach helped tremendously.

STILL TBD on if I'm successful in my bid for the top schools but so far, I feel I'm getting all the right insider tips from this book.

A Complete Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think it's one of the most complete guides for the subject. It covers many different topics in a very sound way which many other books "try to" cover in hundred of pages.

Editorial Review:

Now updated and revised.

Now with new and expanded information on Executive MBA programs, the most up-to-date school rankings, new interviews with admissions officers, and more detailed advice for younger applicants, Montauk offers an up-close and candid view of what leading MBA programs look for in an applicant.

Career Advice for a 20-something 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I gave the book to a 22 year old and he sat down and immediately READ the whole thing. The graphic novel format is genius. Heck, I am well past my 20's and I enjoyed it. I am a big fan of Daniel Pink and especially Whole New Mind. If you can't get a college age or younger to read Whole New Mind this book just might lure them into it. Great information presented in a way that appeals to the audience who most needs it. A great gift to give!! I will be buying more copies to give.

Editorial Review:

To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman

Seven steps to wealthy and healthy life 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This little book is about creating the affluence effortlessly by unleashing your potential. The capabilities of every human are boundless, including the capabilities to create wealth. Deepak Chopra, the author of this book, is an Indian medical doctor and writer. He has written extensively on spirituality and diverse topics in mind-body medicine. Chopra says that he has been influenced by the teachings of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita, as well as by Jiddu Krishnamurti, and by the field of quantum physics (although in this particular book there are no references to quantum physics). You can skim through this book regularly to check on how are you succeeding in the following areas:
- non-attribution;
- refraining from judgments;
- cease to defend your point-of-view or your "self-esteem"
- doing things with the least possible efforts,
All the things above mentioned, as well as the other mentioned in this book, lead to wealthy and healthy life.

I also recommend another book by Deepak Chopra: "Creating Affluence", in addition to this book.

Editorial Review:

In this abridged edition of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Chopra gathers the most powerful pearls of wisdom from his classic bestselling book, and offers his readers a life-altering perspective on the attainment of success. Based on natural laws that govern all of creation, this book shatters the myth that success is the result of hard work, exacting plans, or driving ambition.
This pocketbook edition of his most popular title ever, distills the essence of Chopra’s teachings into seven simple, yet powerful principles that can easily be applied to create success in all areas of your life. Filled with timeless wisdom and practical steps you can apply right away, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is a book you will want to read and refer to again and again.

When Peter Walsh, organizational guru of TLC's hit show Clean Sweep and a regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show, appeared on national television shows and told people how they could reclaim their lives from the suffocating burden of their clutter, the response was overwhelming. People flooded Peter's website (www.peterwalshdesign.com) with success stories about how his book had changed their lives.

With his good humor and reassuring advice, Peter shows you how to face the really big question: What is the vision for the life you want to live? He then offers simple techniques and a step-by-step plan to assess the state of your home, prioritize your possessions, and let go of the clutter you have been holding on to that has kept you from living the life you imagine. Do "48 Days..." or every next day of your life will be a waste. 5 out of 5 stars.

It wasn't until I was over 40 that I got on track with the life and career direction I was made for. Don't make the same mistake. This book, if applied, will be one of the most significant, if not the most significant, tool you will find to help you learn yourself and set a course for the fullest life you were created to live.

Helped with interview 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was well worth the money and the bit of time to read it. It prepared me well for my first interview shortly after reading it. I just completed my third interview with the same company (different people). It also gave me some ideas outside of the box.

This will only help if you are looking for a job instead of developing your own potential.

Dave Ramsey recommends this book too! 5 out of 5 stars.

If your not sure after loosing your job what to do...Get the book. If you hate your job...Get the book. It's a really helpful tool to get you where you want to go in life with your next job!

The "Dave Ramsey" of Careers 5 out of 5 stars.

For those to whom "the whole college experience" is recent and whose enthusiasm and optimism are unchecked this book may be unnecessary and perhaps even somewhat unintelligible. Dan Miller has tapped into the positive mindset and self-confidence of youth, and may be less relevant to the recent graduate who has not yet faced a tough job market.

For everyone who's found themselves in a dead-end job or career, however, or whose college experience is more than a few years old or perhaps even nonexistent, or -- perhaps worst of all -- who has suddenly found their training and experience are "no longer required" by an employer, Dan has the proven ability to inspire or restore the youthful enthusiasm which once filled each of us as we saw the future full of endless possibilities and opportunities. Some of Dan's best "students" are people who have come to realize from his books and materials that getting laid off, "downsized," "offshored" or even fired can be the most positive experience in a career, the springboard from which to dive into a future which might before have seemed too difficult or too risky to pursue; not an ignoble end but an invigorating new beginning.

If you're fresh out of school and full of optimism, put the skills you've learned to work in the job market. Just be aware that the person you'll be asking for a job may well have reached that position by putting Dan Miller's ideas into practice. Dave Ramsey teaches people how to get the most out of their finances; Dan Miller gives people the tools to recognize and make the most of their God-given abilities.

The new grad may lack the experience to appreciate this book, but if you're not fulfilled in your current job, if you dread Mondays, if you want to pursue the adventure and fulfillment of seeking and doing the work you were created for; whether you have a job now or need one, Dan Miller's "48 Days to The Work You Love" is the doorway to a new beginning.

If you are interested in learning more about coaching someone on how to have a fuller live and/or achieve their goals this is a great book for you. I also strongly recommend taking the Co-Active Coaching classes offered by the Coaches Training Institute. During each level of the classes I felt I had learned so much about coaching, myself and all of the wonderful folks in my classes that even if I wasn't studying to become a coach, this program was so well worth it.

Editorial Review:

A newly revised edition of the book that helped define the coaching profession, Co-Active Coaching captures the essence of what it takes to design and maintain successful, collaborative, and empowering coaching relationships. The authors describe in detail their flexible and adaptive model-placing the client's agenda at the heart of the coaching partnership, define the skills required for success, provide dozens of sample coaching conversations, and a power-packed Coach's Toolkit of over 35 exercises, questionnaires, checklists, and forms to make these proven principles and techniques eminently practical and immediately actionable.

Does your bucket have a hole in it? 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 10 people found this review helpful.

HOW FULL IS YOUR BUCKET by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton explores the benefits of positive reinforcement in business, scholastic, marital and other settings. This is an easy read with sound information presented in ways that are applicable immediately. The work focuses on the premise that we each have our own bucket. Positive reinforcement, given or received, fills the bucket. Negative interaction, given or received, dips out of our bucket.

Good examples are given such as John Gottman's marital study of 700 engaged couples. Gottman concluded after just a 15 minute video of each couple's interaction, which couples marriages would end in divorce. His predictions, 10 years later, were over 90% accurate, clearly illustrating the necessity to fill buckets with praise, rather than drain them with nagging and negative interactions. Perhaps a good indication of our current 50% divorce rate.

I actually purchased the book on CD and it came with some additional web-based free content, which I have not yet looked at. I can only assume the book carries the same additional access. My one knock on this CD set is, even though it is unabridged, it is only about 3 hours total. More information in the form of case studies and implementation would have added greater value.

I believe this book would be helpful in many different situations, but would particularly recommend it for business leaders, married couples and parents.

Editorial Review:

How did you feel after your last interaction with another person? Did that person — your spouse, best friend, coworker, or even a stranger — "fill your bucket" by making you feel more positive? Or did that person "dip from your bucket," leaving you more negative than before? The number one New York Times and number one Business Week bestseller, How Full Is Your Bucket? reveals how even the briefest interactions affect your relationships, productivity, health, and longevity. Organized around a simple metaphor of a dipper and a bucket, and grounded in 50 years of research, this book will show you how to greatly increase the positive moments in your work and your life — while reducing the negative. Filled with discoveries, powerful strategies, and engaging stories, How Full Is Your Bucket? is sure to inspire lasting changes and has all the makings of a timeless classic.
