Drivel from a Shill 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

More drivel from the liberal shill that is Chris Matthews. The most partisan person on cable news programs, none of what this guy has to say is interesting and this book confirms it. Waste of money. Read someone else like Mark Levin if you want to learn something. I'd give it zero stars if they allowed it.

Excellent Insight 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Matthews writes with such voice. The book can compel even the apolitical. A must read.

Editorial Review:

Hardball, first published in 1988, is like a modern version of Machiavelli's The Prince, only much more richly illustrated, with anecdotes drawn from talk-show host Chris Matthews's stint as a congressional staffer (where he worked for, among others, renowned Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill). Discussing such basic principles as "It's not who you know; it's who you get to know" and "Don't get mad, don't get even--get ahead," Matthews not only dishes out choice Washington insider info, he has over the years inspired many readers to apply his principles for political success to their own professional lives.

Career comics advice for people who don't like to read 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Any comic book -- excuse me, "manga" book -- which claims it's "the last career guide you'll ever need" is either deluded or written for suckers. The book develops a few rules of thumb which purport to outline a sort of template for giving work and career choice meaning. People who think along lines of following rules will probably eat this stuff up, but the problems with rule following are many: How should one prioritize the rules? What are the meta-rules -- the rules that tell us when to make exception to the rules? How general or particular should the application of the rule be? Why do we trust rules as opposed to deciding merely situation-by-situation? If expert rule givers give us different rule sets, then to which rule set should we give heed? Indeed, the book gives a few general platitudes which few would find controversial. And it's fun to read manga. But Superman, Spiderman, Batman, etc. are fun to read also, yet why would we build our personal ethic around these stories? Likewise, why should we take manga boy, Johnny Bunko, as any more informative about career choice? Answer: we shouldn't. Look -- it's a fun book; but, that's all it is.

Editorial Review:

There's never been a career guide like The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You'll Ever Need. Told in manga-the Japanese comic book format that's an international sensation--it's the fully illustrated story of a young Everyman just out of college who lands his first job. Johnny Bunko is new to the Boggs Corp., and he stumbles through his early months as a working stiff until a crisis prompts him to rethink his approach. Step by step he builds a career, illustrating as he does the six core lessons of finding, keeping, and flourishing in satisfying work. A groundbreaking guide to surviving and flourishing in any career, The Adventures of Johnny Bunko is smart, engaging and insightful, and offers practical advice for anyone looking for a life of rewarding work.

Editorial Review:

When Peter Walsh, organizational guru of TLC's hit show Clean Sweep and a regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show, appeared on national television shows and told people how they could reclaim their lives from the suffocating burden of their clutter, the response was overwhelming. People flooded Peter's website (www.peterwalshdesign.com) with success stories about how his book had changed their lives.

Peter's unique approach helped people everywhere learn to let go of the emotional and psychological clutter that was literally and figuratively choking the life out of their homes.

With his good humor and reassuring advice, Peter shows you how to face the really big question: What is the vision for the life you want to live? He then offers simple techniques and a step-by-step plan to assess the state of your home, prioritize your possessions, and let go of the clutter you have been holding on to that has kept you from living the life you imagine. The result is freed-up space, less stress, and more energy for living a happier, richer life every day.

Painful 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is not useful. Many of the theories presented are outdated and the attempt at multiculturalism is offensive at best and only serves to present non-white cultures as "other". This book is poorly written, and in fact oddly written. If you don't have to buy this for class, don't buy it.

Editorial Review:

This highly successful book has been called the most comprehensive text on the market, providing students with needed career theory as well as practical techniques and examples. Through the author's clear writing style, case examples, tables, and exercises, students develop a solid understanding of the theoretical models of career counseling and are thoroughly exposed to the practical information on how to effectively counsel clients about career issues. As demonstrated by the text's new subtitle, 'A Holistic Approach,' this substantially revised Seventh Edition reflects the growing emphasis on looking at the "whole person"--values, temperament, talents, and passions--to determine his or her best career fit.

Should have read the reviews first 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have done a lot of shopping on Amazon and have found the reviews to be accurate and dependable. Unfortunately I bought this on the advice of Dave Ramsey and did not read the reviews. This book is awful. I have read a lot of self improvement books and this is by far the worst.
I persevered to the end thinking (hoping) some structure would emerge. No such luck. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is just an endless string of quotes and stories. Half way through the book I found a reference to a site that sounded like it might be some sort of a form to define your interests. Turns out it was just a veiled advertisement to get you to pay $20 on Dan Miller's web site. Give me a break.
Give this one a miss.

Religious claptrap 1 out of 5 stars.

The description for this book should be a bit more forthcoming in the fact that this is "faith based". Faith is well and good, but it has little place in the job hunt.

One of the most useful books you'll ever own 5 out of 5 stars.

Everyone should be doing work that they love, according to how they are wired. If you are unhappy in your job, this book is for you. Even if you are happy in your career but missing something, this book is for you. Practical and fun exercises at the end of each chapter get your brain moving. Life is short - love your work!

Editorial Review:

This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. --Joan Price

The Career Fitness Program 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I expected more from the text, based on the title. The material seems to reflect the job market of 10 years ago - little reference to what's happening in the industry today that job seekers need to know. The text places heavy emphasis on the self-concept and values which are important, but skills the person has and how they relate to positions in the workplace are of utmost importance. An individual may have interest in a career field, but it could be one that's fading not emerging. I was expecting a book that would allow the reader to insert new ideas and new strategies right into a job search. The book may suffice as a supplemental reading, but not as a tutorial on establishing a career and finding a job. It lacks vision. I felt it was analog thinking in a digital world.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This Book I got for a class, and it's great, not only to follow along with in a course but also just for everyday life, it provides great questions for thought and interactive exercises to learn more about yourself and what you want in life!
