Well after 30 years in the ministry it was time to change careers. I was faced with an dilemma that every change of career pastor faces: How in the world do I market ministry skills in the work place? Too many of my colleagues have not been very successful transitioning from ministry to business. . . they end up working in mortuaries, rest homes, and YMCA's at less than desirable salaries. After working for a very modest salary for my entire career, I was looking for someway to make a good living.

This book helped me in two ways. First, it helped me put in the language of business the skills I acquired in ministry. Second, it gave me valuable help in writing a resume that was appropriate for my new career. Here is a word of advice: You may be tempted to skip the first chapter and start thumbing through the book looking for an appropriate resume. Please do not do this. Read the introductory material first.

This book was an invaluable resource for my successful career change and it can help you achieve the same success that I have.

As a Career Counselor, I'm always assisting my clients with resumes. Creating a "target" resume is a foreign concept to most folks. It's a common misconception to include your entire work history and every experience on your resume. Katy's book focuses on how to match your resume to a specific job. She gives strategies that have proven successful for myself and my clients on how to incorporate your most relevant skills and experience for a particular position. This technique makes it easier for an employer to know which job you're interested in and how you stand out as a candidate. I love the before and after resume samples and refer to them often. Way to go, Katy! Thank you for another useful tool!

Should be KSA for limited Government Jobs 2 out of 5 stars.

This book has too few job examples and many of the jobs it does offer KSAs for are related. If I could, I wouldn't have spent the money or the 5 months it took to get it. Out of hundreds if not thousands of fed. jobs, this book manages to cover KSAs for whopping 42 of them. If you are in any science field other than medical, don't bother with this book.

This book is designed to help people who seek their first federal government job as well as federal employees who want to advance in the system. The process of getting a government job often involves preparing complex applications, and those applications frequently require written statements or "elements" which are called "Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities" or KSAs. In the competitive hiring process, the individual who gets hired for the federal job usually has the best KSAs. This book shows examples of effective KSAs that have worked for real people. The book doesn't simply "tell how" to write KSAs; it actually "shows how" to write KSAs in sample after sample related to multiple fields. This book will do a great deal to make the federal hiring process understandable as it illuminates one of the most complex features of getting a government job: writing the KSAs or "elements," as they are often called.

If you are just starting on your resume or have been working on it for awhile and are stuck, this could help you. There are a lot of great examples in a fairly consistent format. The recommended format is close to what the expensive resume shops recommend--white space, concise, clear wording, chronological format, etc.

Generally the examples are for business executive resumes--CEO, VP, finance, marketing, etc., and the book is an excellent guide to that type of resume, but it won't help much if you are in a technical, non-executive career path.

This book could probably cut ten hours off of the time it takes to prepare a winning resume, so it is well worth the price.

This is one of the better executive resume reference book I had come across. If you are in the transition to your mid-career, and is having trouble to put your career in a bigger picture so that people can understand, then the author has done a wonderful job in offering you examples and insights on how to put things in order - from an employer perspective.

The only drawback of this book is probably only the 'repetitive' phrases and approaches the author used. The examples in the book, claimed by the author, were real-life examples created either by him or his staff. Therefore, as you read through the book you will find similarities in almost all the resumes. Though this is understandable, I personally think this can be improved somewhat.

In terms of usefulness in refernce, I would have given this a 5-star. In terms of value, I will have to settle for a 4-star rating.

Great title, no substance. 2 out of 5 stars.

The book's title is one that gets your attention but the commentary regarding resume writting is novice at best. I suggest you buy Asher's Bible of Executive Resumes if you want an in depth discussion and candid breakdown of the resume writting process. The only redeeming quality of this book is it has alot of examples.

This is the best resume book I have ever seen. Perhaps the best feedback I have about this book is when I was job hunting last time, during interviews, people commented on how well my resume was formatted. What more do you want?

In fact, I have passed it on to friends and colleagues. The reason that I found it so helpful is the way the author formats resumes. I would agree with the previous review that there is no indepth discussion of every section of a resume, but there is clearly enough to get the basic idea -- which is all you need.

I bought this book a few years ago when I was job hunting and thought it was the best one in the bookstore. Because I am rewritting my resume again, I went to a bookstore and looked at all the resume books again and thought that this was the best book one the shelf.

I highly recommend it.
