Editorial Review:

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?

These may not sound like typical questions for an econo-mist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing—and whose conclusions turn conventional wisdom on its head.

Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: freakonomics.

Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt and Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Freakonomics, they explore the hidden side of . . . well, everything. The inner workings of a crack gang. The truth about real-estate agents. The myths of campaign finance. The telltale marks of a cheating schoolteacher. The secrets of the Klu Klux Klan.

What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

Freakonomics establishes this unconventional premise: If morality represents how we would like the world to work, then economics represents how it actually does work. It is true that readers of this book will be armed with enough riddles and stories to last a thousand cocktail parties. But Freakonomics can provide more than that. It will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

Editorial Review:

In the classic bestseller, Capitalism and Freedom, Milton Friedman presents his view of the proper role of competitive capitalism—the organization of economic activity through private enterprise operating in a free market—as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom. Beginning with a discussion of principles of a liberal society, Friedman applies them to such constantly pressing problems as monetary policy, discrimination, education, income distribution, welfare, and poverty.

"Milton Friedman is one of the nation's outstanding economists, distinguished for remarkable analytical powers and technical virtuosity. He is unfailingly enlightening, independent, courageous, penetrating, and above all, stimulating."-Henry Hazlitt, Newsweek

"It is a rare professor who greatly alters the thinking of his professional colleagues. It's an even rarer one who helps transform the world. Friedman has done both."-Stephen Chapman, Chicago Tribune

Pretty good book for intermediate level 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Design:
The book is designed well with appropriate headings and sub-headings making it smooth to read and navigate. The language used is also well understood.

Content:
This book introduces the various financial markets: bond, stock, foreign exchange and a brief discussion on derivatives. It gives a general idea and analysis behind the operating mechanisms of monetary policies, paving the way for further studies into the topics.

Its main focus is on the U.S. economy, and includes applications in the European Union and Asia as well. Small sections are devoted to real world applications, with reference to the concepts taught.

For who:
On the other hand, this book remains an introduction to monetary economies and is not for students seeking detailed analysis. Students should also have a basic background on economics in order to utilize the text to the fullest.

Editorial Review:

Contains many new insights on the monetary policy process, the regulation and supervision of the financial system, and the internationalization of financial markets. Textbook. DLC: Finance.

Still overpriced 4 out of 5 stars.

The book arrived in brand new condition. The price paid at the time was lowest on the internet as brand new but still not a great deal. Recommend buying used for cheaper if possible.

Great book.....the subject? meh 4 out of 5 stars.

The material was straightforward and easy to understand, although it may have helped that our school requires us to take calculus first. I found the examples helpful...however it was brought to my attention that our faculty likes some of their "own" formulas better than the shall we say long, drawn-out tedious formulas of the book. Same answers, just different ways of getting them. Anyhow, excited to buy and resell this book through Amazon! Even more excited to be through with that class! :D

Editorial Review:

This market leading text offers a solid, comprehensive, applications-oriented approach. Written by authors who are well-known and highly regarded in the field, the text provides sound methodological development. The discussion and development of each technique is presented in an application setting, with the statistical results providing insights to decisions and solutions to problems. Statistics for Business and Economics, 8e offers proven accuracy that has led instructors to adopted it simply for its superior examples and exercises alone.

best together with Greene's <> 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book. But buy it for the right reason. All by itself, not as useful as a lot of the reviews suggests.

This has to be used together with Greene's <>. It suppliment a lot of the formulae with ideas and reasons. But it is light on formula by itself, and you can not use it as a reference. This is a explain book, tells you why we should do it this way, what to caution/watch for, what is the logic behind that.

So buy it with greene's book. Learn the math in greene's book, keep greene's book on the shelf as regular reference book. But read this book to understand ideas, and sort out complexicities.

Overall, still a great buy.

Editorial Review:

This is the perfect (and essential) supplement for all econometrics classes--from a rigorous first undergraduate course, to a first master's, to a PhD course. It explains what is going on in textbooks full of proofs and formulas. Kennedy's A Guide to Econometrics offers intuition, skepticism, insights, humor, and practical advice (do's and don'ts). The sixth edition contains new chapters on instrumental variables and on computation considerations, more information on GMM and nonparametrics, and an introduction to wavelets.

Lacking in key areas 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I found the book to be adequate in terms of how well-written it is, but lacking in many areas that keep it from getting anything higher than 3 stars.

My biggest gripe is that there are few examples. I really took this for granted, and didn't notice how important it was until they were taken out. In classes like math, you can easily get lost in all the notation in each formula. Examples are important because they show you how to use that formula in a real application. The book lacks examples, and this really makes it harder to understand what Stock and Watson are talkin about.

Another thing I'd like are answers to their problems. This is just useful so that you can check whether you are doing the problems at the end of the chapter right. Otherwise, you're completely clueless on how well you are doing.

Editorial Review:

Designed for a first course in introductory econometrics, Introduction to Econometrics, reflects modern theory and practice, with interesting applications that motivate and match up with the theory to ensure students grasp the relevance of econometrics. Authors James H. Stock and Mark W. Watson integrate real-world questions and data into the development of the theory, with serious treatment of the substantive findings of the resulting empirical analysis.

Editorial Review:

This graduate text provides an intuitive but rigorous treatment of contemporary methods used in microeconometric research. The book makes clear that applied microeconometrics is about the estimation of marginal and treatment effects, and that parametric estimation is simply a means to this end. It also clarifies the distinction between causality and statistical association.

The book focuses specifically on cross section and panel data methods. Population assumptions are stated separately from sampling assumptions, leading to simple statements as well as to important insights. The unified approach to linear and nonlinear models and to cross section and panel data enables straightforward coverage of more advanced methods. The numerous end-of-chapter problems are an important component of the book. Some problems contain important points not fully described in the text, and others cover new ideas that can be analyzed using tools presented in the current and previous chapters. Several problems require the use of the data sets located at the author's website.

Editorial Review:

This book provides the most comprehensive treatment to date of microeconometrics, the analysis of individual-level data on the economic behavior of individuals or firms using regression methods for cross section and panel data. The book is oriented to the practitioner. A basic understanding of the linear regression model with matrix algebra is assumed. The text can be used for a microeconometrics course, typically a second-year economics PhD course; for data-oriented applied microeconometrics field courses; and as a reference work for graduate students and applied researchers who wish to fill in gaps in their toolkit. Distinguishing features of the book include emphasis on nonlinear models and robust inference, simulation-based estimation, and problems of complex survey data. The book makes frequent use of numerical examples based on generated data to illustrate the key models and methods. More substantially, it systematically integrates into the text empirical illustrations based on seven large and exceptionally rich data sets.

Editorial Review:

INTRODUCTORY ECONOMETRICS: A MODERN APPROACH, 4e illustrates how empirical researchers think about and apply econometric methods in real-world practice. The text's unique approach reflects the fact that undergraduate econometrics has moved beyond just a set of abstract tools to being genuinely useful for answering questions in business, policy evaluation, and forecasting environments. The systematic approach, which reduces clutter by introducing assumptions only as they are needed, makes absorbing the material easier and leads to better econometric practices. Its unique organization separates topics by the kinds of data being analyzed, leading to an appreciation for the important issues that arise in drawing conclusions from the different kinds of data economists use. Packed with relevant applications, INTRODUCTORY ECONOMETRICS offers a wealth of interesting data sets that can be used to reproduce the examples in the text or as the starting point for original research projects.
