--Nancy Snow, University of Toledo

"The textbook is well written with good examples and homework problems. This book is easy to understand, but is rigorous in its coverage of accounting issues."

Professor not included 4 out of 5 stars.

This book gives detailed instructions on fundamental to intermediate accounting concepts. Some concepts can be easily understood without teacher assistance others are a bit hard to understand without further explanation. I bought this book because it was required for my undergraduate class in accounting.

This book is very good book especially for the beginners.
It explains well about both accounting principles and their applications.

But in examples, I found some typos~

Zero would be more precise because of the time wasted on this book 1 out of 5 stars.

Forced to use this text as a part of an MBA program, I found myself pouring over every paragraph without advancing my knowledge. Additionally, the book is riddled with errors, making it even harder to establish any trust between reader and author. If you too are forced to use this text, I hope you are better at finding external resources than was I. If you are using the text for self-study and have little or no background in accounting, I strongly urge to you to look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Ideal for graduate, MBA, and higher-level undergraduate programs, FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING: AN INTRODUCTION TO CONCEPTS, METHODS, AND USES presents both the basic concepts underlying financial statements and the terminology and methods that allow you to interpret, analyze, and evaluate actual corporate financial statements.

This book sucks 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is not for people who don't know anything about accounting. Yes, it's a good book, but the language used is very high-level and you couldn't understand it if you weren't an accountant. I suggest this book for people who are already accountants or have accounting degrees and want to review for the CPA exam. But for new students who just want accounting for electives or whatnot, like me, it's not a good book. I didn't understand anything I read and because of this book, I have changed my major to something non-business related. Avoid classes that use this book.

Good book for entry level accounting 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I used this book in a financial accounting course, and found it to be very useful. The examples make some concepts easier to understand, and the real life examples are good experience for students trying to make the connection between the classroom concepts and the real world. The questions at the end of each chapter are very thorough. My teacher would assign a dozen or so, and it would take a few hours to do them all. They have a good mix of short answer definitions, multiple choice, and general accounting problems that help you understand all of the concepts. There are also questions that use real world financial statements in the appendix. Overall the book is easy to understand for someone who is new to accounting. It would often clarify the concepts that I didn't quite understand in class. Key concepts are listed in the margins, which helps for tests.

Editorial Review:

Libby/Libby/Short wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial accounting textbooks are often not. They believe most financial accounting textbooks fail to demonstrate that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. When writing this text, they considered career relevance as their guide when selecting material, and the need to engage the student as their guide to style, pedagogy, and design. Libby/Libby/Short is the only financial accounting text to successfully implement a real-world, single focus company approach in every chapter. Students and instructors have responded very favorably to the use of focus companies and the real-world financial statements. The companies chosen are engaging and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of whether or not the student has chosen to major in accounting.

This book sucks if you're learning for the first time. 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book is TERRIBLE. I am an engineer in an MBA program. The book is supposedly for non accountants, but I don't see how it's possible to understand this book if you're not an accountant. If you're unfortunate and have to use this book, find a good book that you can actually read to supplement the subject.

There's a lot mumbo jumbo using technical terms that could be much easier stood with a table and reference to specific numbers in the table. There has got to be a better way to learn finacial statement analysis.

HORRIBLE BOOK EVER 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am in an MBA program too. I have to use this book as a textbook for the course, Financial Statement Analysis. I have taken Managerial Financing before and done a very good job on that course. But it doesn't help me a lot to understand this terrible book. It isn't that course's fault. I appreciate that I have taken some financing course before I use this book. I can't understand this book very well totally because this book is terrible. Both textbooks for Financing and this course are published by the same publisher, Thomas?..I couldn't believe how different those two books are.

In this book, Pepsi case keeps confusing most readers. Most equations are not highlighted so you can not find them easily and quickly. Homework is not designed for the students who are studying this book but for the authors themselves. Fortunately, our professor sends his master copy to us. It will help us understand homework more, but unfortunately after we have handed in our results.

If anyone who teaches FSA, please do not use this book as your textbook for your students. Pls, pls, pls..Even though you are an expert on accounting or finance, your students will still suffer from your course and almost learn nothing from this TERRIBLE book.

Editorial Review:

Stickney/Brown/Wahlen is a balanced, flexible, and complete Financial Statement Analysis book that is written with the premise that students learn financial statement analysis most effectively by performing the analysis on actual companies. Students learn to integrate the concepts from economics, business strategy, accounting, and other business disciplines through the integration of a unique six-step process.

Poorest text ever written 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If your school uses this book, not only don't take this class, drop out of the school. If I could rate this with negative numbers I would. This is the worst textbook ever devised by man OR woman. If you are already a CPA looking for a review, it might be worth something, otherwise it teaches nothing. It presents examples without first explaining things then explains things using examples that have no bearing on what is being taught.

If you have to use this book, my sympathy for you. I can only hope the school will refund at least a portion of my money.

Decrease in service with newer addition 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

With the 14th edition of this book, the use of the website for studying was taken away, to be replaced with a pay for use service of about $20. My professor would have stayed with the 13th edition had he known that they were going to take away this service to the students. No CD or access to a website for answers to the questions. Book is well written, easy to follow, but needs a more comprehensive glossary, since words and phrases within accounting mean different things and can be interpreted differently depending on the user and with accounting following the GAAP rule this becomes even more important. Practice items are well designed. The Layout of the book demands approximately 100 pages a week for a semester course, for a course in oversight of accounting this is rather hefty. Without a CD or other access privileges, I don't see a need to order this as a new item, go for used!

Editorial Review:

With the fourteenth edition of Financial and Managerial Accounting: The Basis for Business Decisions, the Williams author team carries on the tradition of being a solid foundation for students learning basic accounting concepts. Through the revision, the authors have further refined the financial accounting topics, while slightly expanding the managerial accounting material to provide even more balanced coverage.

Hallmarks of the text—including the solid Accounting Cycle Presentation, relevant pedagogy, and high quality, end-of-chapter material—have all been updated and enhanced through the revision. A new design enhances the graphical elements of the text, while the integration of several boxed elements provides a more streamlined approach to chapter topics.

Fundamentals of Financial Accounting, 2e, by Phillips/Libby/Libby presents an engaging, balanced, and appropriately paced analysis of the fundamentals of financial accounting. Its conversational writing style makes it easy to read and understand, while the selection of real focus companies reinforces the relevance of accounting by introducing students to accounting and business activities in the context of their favorite companies. Balance between preparer and user orientations is achieved throughout the book, by studying both the accounting activities that take place inside the company, as well as evaluating their impact on decisions, and users outside the company. Topic coverage is paced appropriately for students new to accounting, and is thoroughly reinforced every step of the way with an ample variety of innovative pedagogical tools. Clearly understandable, relevant, and accessible, FFA is simply the most student-friendly financial book on the market and provides the tools for students to grasp financial accounting from the ground up.
