  • Guides readers through the nuts and bolts of recording a transaction

Learn about accounting legerdemain 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The great thing about this book: not only will you learn about accounting prestidigitation from the world's expert in this subject (Schilit's forensic accounting firm, the CFRA, is used by hedge funds worldwide to find problem companies), you can actually learn pretty much all there is to know about corporate accounting and financial statements. I found his explanations tremendously lucid; easily understood by an intelligent person who can add, subtract, multiply and divide. What is more; he made accounting not only accessible, but also somewhat exciting; not an adjective that generally describes accounting. He makes finding the cheating companies a jolly detective game of "spot the weasel!"

Who should read this? If you are a serious investor; someone who treats investments like something other than gambling, this is an absolute must. I'm not talking about speculators; you can speculate well without this stuff (though you can speculate better with it), but for investors you can't afford to be without it. This will teach you how to read a company statement, and a 10-k. Even those who have a more casual interest in investing or business will likely find this an amusing and rewarding read.

Editorial Review:

Techniques to uncover and avoid accounting frauds and scams Inflated profits . . . Suspicious write-offs . . . Shifted expenses . . . These and other dubious financial maneuvers have taken on a contemporary twist as companies pull out the stops in seeking to satisfy Wall Street. Financial Shenanigans pulls back the curtain on the current climate of accounting fraud. It presents tools that anyone who is potentially affected by misleading business valuationsfrom investors and lenders to managers and auditorscan use to research and read financial reports, and to identify early warning signs of a company's problems. A bestseller in its first edition, Financial Shenanigans has been thoroughly updated for today's marketplace. New chapters, data, and research reveal contemporary "shenanigans" that have been known to fool even veteran researchers.

Great book for small business owners.... 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This is one of my two favorite accounting books for small business owners. The other is "Small Business Accounting Simplified" by Daniel Sitarz. These books present a lot of the same information, but they have slightly different perspectives on small business accounting and I think both viewpoints are useful and complimentary. Establishing your accounting system is serious business, so I would consider purchasing both. It's a small investment considering how important and time consuming this area could be for small business.

With that said, this book will help you to understand the basics of accounting and the advantages and disadvantages of various methods of keeping your books. It is very streamlined, practical and will help you to get your books together quickly using the easiest system that is appropriate for your business.

This is a very non-intimidating book and first time business owners will really like it. The other book I recommended above by Sitarz is more involved and may be something you want to get down the road. If you are a very small business, this book may have all you need and you may appreciate that it lacks some detail that might be unnecessary.

Both books that I mention are adequate to get a small business up and running. However, if you are not a numbers person by nature or have an aversion to accounting, this might be the best place to start. As part of my livelihood I do small business consulting and this title and the one I mentioned in the first paragraph are the two books I most often recommend for a new small business.

Book was in excellent condition. But shipping took more than 2 weeks and my email to the vendor inquiring about its status took a while before any response from vendor
.

Zero would be more precise because of the time wasted on this book 1 out of 5 stars.

Forced to use this text as a part of an MBA program, I found myself pouring over every paragraph without advancing my knowledge. Additionally, the book is riddled with errors, making it even harder to establish any trust between reader and author. If you too are forced to use this text, I hope you are better at finding external resources than was I. If you are using the text for self-study and have little or no background in accounting, I strongly urge to you to look elsewhere.

Very Good 5 out of 5 stars.

The book is brand new. The price is fair for a new book. It was delivered within 2 to 3 days of purchase. Overall is very satisfied.

THE BEST BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

THE BOOK IS COOL. THE ONLY REASON I BOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE I AM TAKING A CLASS ON ACCOUNTING. IT DOES HELP A LOT AND THE READING IS SIMPLE. SO BUY IT IF U LIKE ACCOUNTING!

Editorial Review:

Libby/Libby/Short wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial accounting textbooks are often not. They believe most financial accounting textbooks fail to demonstrate that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. When writing this text, they considered career relevance as their guide when selecting material, and the need to engage the student as their guide to style, pedagogy, and design.. . Libby/Libby/Short is the only financial accounting text to successfully implement a real-world, single focus company approach in every chapter. Students and instructors have responded very favorably to the use of focus companies and the real-world financial statements. The companies chosen are engaging and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of whether or not the student has chosen to major in accounting. .

This is a popular university textbook. I know this because I called several universities for recommendations before purchasing. I've used this book as a professional reference. It is very current on recent pronouncements. The book is well organized, has good examples and it includes many "real world" examples as well

GREAT BUY 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was delivered promptly. I had it in time for class to start. Very easy to follow and understand.

Editorial Review:

The approach used by Hoyle, Schaefer, and Doupnik in the new edition allows students to think critically about accounting, just as they will do while preparing for the CPA exam. With this text, students gain a well-balanced appreciation of the Accounting profession. The 9th edition introduces the students to the field's many aspects, while focusing on past and present resolutions. The text continues to show the development of financial reporting as a product of intense and considered debate that continues today and into the future.

Financial & Managerial Accounting 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The textbook has been extremely useful thus far in my class. Unfortunately, the only issue I have found with it is the fact that the authors didn't apply any "real world" situations to it. My professor, who has 35 years experience as an accountant, has gone through and made changes to the book during the lessons; informing us of how things will actually appear when doing the ledgers, etc. Other than this small issue, the book is an excellent resource.

Great timing! 5 out of 5 stars.

It's an accounting textbook...far from interesting, but it gets the job done and has lots and lots of practice problems and examples to work from.

Editorial Review:

Warren, Reeve, and Fess deliver again. This book presents balanced coverage of both financial and managerial topics. The authors refine their proven approach to accounting's expanding role in business.
