Editorial Review:

The only comprehensive account of operational risk in securities settlements
Securities Operations focuses on the settlement aspects of a securities transaction. As financial analysts make a greater effort toward quantifying and managing operational risk, they are paying more attention to securities transactions in general and to the settlement phase in particular. While describing the practical issues, this book enumerates the different "back office" related risks potentially encountered throughout the settlement. Simmons also covers more advanced topics such as derivatives, trade compensation, internal allocation of funding costs, and operational performance measurement.
Michael Simmons (London, UK) is currently Head of Business Consultancy at Wilco International, a major software systems provider to the financial markets.
Over the years, financial professionals around the world have looked to the Wiley Finance series and its wide array of bestselling books for the knowledge, insights, and techniques that are essential to success in financial markets. A Comprehensive and Authoritative Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"The Analysis and Use of Financial Statements" is a thorough, detailed, comprehensive and authoritative guide on analyzing and using financial statements. This book was a core component of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) study materials when I took the CFA examinations a number of years ago.

This is not a book for beginners. Even for those readers with finance and accounting experience, parts of this book can be challenging. It is a worthwhile, if time-consuming and at times difficult, undertaking to read and digest this book.

For those readers with an interest in learning how to analyze and use financial statements as effectively as possible, this is a good book to read.

not understandable 1 out of 5 stars.

worst accounting I've ever read so far. It requires knowledge which doesn't make sense for me cuz i think book should provide knowledge for reader. Basically, it doesn't explain a thing. It's not worth for what u pay.

Editorial Review:

Accounting Standards (US and International) have been updated to reflect the latest pronouncements.

Editorial Review:

The need for an understanding of accounting is now even more critical than ever for lawyers practicing in many areas including securities and corporate law and litigation. In addition, over the last several years, the Financial Accounting Standards Board has made some landmark changes in the accounting rules in areas of interest to lawyers, including the accounting for mergers and acquisitions. The Second Edition of Accounting and Finance For Lawyers includes important material on such areas as accounting for stock options and derivatives and the elimination of the pooling of interests method of accounting for acquisitions. There is a discussion of the accounting implications of the use of so-called special purpose entities. Finally, a chapter on international accounting issues reflects the increasing globalization of business and accounting. As in the First Edition, the basic building blocks of accounting are covered so that the material is accessible and useful to those with any level of accounting knowledge.

This book is great if you are a beginner and have few knowledge in the CFA programm it covers alot of basic materials, but its not enough to pass the CFA exam you should go beyond the basics to pass the exam

good book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book offers a quick trip to the field. It is very reader friendly.
Great starter book.

Does NOT have CFA 2008 Learning Objectives 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It may be good for beginners to understand the concepts, but it is a waste of your money if you are taking the exam for 2008. Although some may consider not a big deal, one disturbing thing I found was that the formulas use a different notations/symbols/terminology than what you will find in CFA Institute books. So you are likely to go back and forth between notations and get confused. It is better to stick to CFA Institute notations as questions in the exam will use the terminology from their book.

You will also be surprised to know that this book does not cover 2008 CFA Learning Objectives.

Excellent CFA Review Book for Starter 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent review for anyone to start preparing for CFA Exam. It works with the study materials by Schweser. It is a quick review for fundamentals of CFA Level 1 examination. The test questions at the end of each section provide a very good test on the understanding of the section. I highly recommend this.

Editorial Review:

The longer WorldCom Chief Audit Executive Cynthia Cooper stares at the entries in front of her, the more sinister they seem. But the CFO is badgering her to delay her team's audit of the company's books and directing others to block Cooper's efforts. Still, something in the pit of her stomach tells her to keep digging. Cooper takes readers behind the scenes on a riveting, real-time journey as she and her team work at night and behind closed doors to expose the largest fraud in corporate history. Whom can they trust? Could she lose her job? Should she fear for her physical safety?

In Extraordinary Circumstances, she recounts for the first time her journey from her close family upbringing in a small Mississippi town, to working motherhood and corporate success, to the pressures of becoming a whistleblower, to being named one of Time's 2002 Persons of the Year. She also provides a rare insider's glimpse into the spectacular rise and fall of WorldCom, a telecom titan, the darling of Wall Street, and a Cinderella story for Mississippi.

With remarkable candor, Cooper discusses her struggle to overcome these challenges, and how she has found healing through sharing the lessons learned with the next generation. This book reminds us all that ethical decision-making is not forged at the crossroads of major events but starts in childhood, "decision by decision and brick by brick."

At a time when corporate dishonesty is dominating public attention, Extraordinary Circumstances makes it clear that the tone set at the top is critical to fostering an ethical environment in the work-place. Provocative, moving, and intensely personal, Extraordinary Circumstances is a wake-up call to corporate leaders and an intimate glimpse at a scandal that shook the business world.

Editorial Review:

Praise for The Financial Numbers Game

"So much for the notion 'those who can, do-those who can't, teach.' Mulford and Comiskey function successfully both as college professors and real-world financial mercenaries. These guys know their balance sheets. The Financial Numbers Game should serve as a survival manual for both serious individual investors and industry pros who study and act upon the interpretation of financial statements. This unique blend of battle-earned scholarship and quality writing is a must-read/must-have reference for serious financial statement analysis."
-Bob Acker, Editor/Publisher, The Acker Letter

"Wall Street's unforgiving attention to quarterly earnings presents ever-increasing pressure on CFOs to manage earnings and expectations. The Financial Numbers Game provides a clear explanation of the ways in which management can stretch, bend, and break accounting rules to reach the desired bottom line. This arms the serious investor or financial analyst with the healthy skepticism required to drive beyond reported results to a clear understanding of a firm's true performance."
-Mark Hurley, Managing Director, Training and Development Global Corporate and Investment Banking, Bank of America

"After reading The Financial Numbers Game, I feel as though I've taken a master's course in financial statement analysis. Mulford and Comiskey's latest book should be required reading for anyone who is serious about fundamentally analyzing stocks."
-Harry Domash, Investing Columnist, San Francisco Chronicle and Publisher, Winning Investing

The Financial Numbers Game identifies the steps businesses may take to misstate financial performance and helps its readers to identify those situations where reported results may not be what they seem.
