Mostly obvious advice, but helpful if you read between the lines 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Overall, I did not find this book to be helpful upon reading it. The vast majority of the advice is either obvious or something you already know by the time you become aware of and purchase this book. Who doesn't know that working long hours and refraining from having children is one of the best ways to succeed in science? Who doesn't know that having a good mentor is an invaluable asset, but not guaranteed to happen because we as scientists receive no training in how to be good mentors?

On the positive side, if you read the anecdotes and success/failure stories that constitute a significant fraction of the book, there is a lot to be learned. Some provide hope because they remind you that others have successfully overcome the same challenges you have faced. Others reinforce the often overlooked point that, while having a supportive mentor is beneficial, we are in a career where being your own best advocate is a must. Taking the anecdotal stories as advice on how to best represent yourself and prepare for your career can make this a useful read. That having been said, the value of the advice tapers off the later in your career you read it.

Editorial Review:

Despite your graduate education, brainpower, and technical prowess, your career in scientific research is far from assured. Permanent positions are scarce, science survival is rarely part of formal graduate training, and a good mentor is hard to find. This exceptional volume explains what stands between you and fulfilling long-term research career. Bringing the key survival skills into focus, A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! proposes a rational approach to establishing yourself as a scientist. It offers sound advice of selecting a thesis or postdoctoral adviser, choosing among research jobs in academia, government laboratories, and industry, preparing for an employment interview, and defining a research program. This book will help you make your oral presentations effective, your journal articles compelling, and your grant proposals successful. A Ph.D. Is Not Enough should be required reading for anyone on the threshold of a career in science.

yet another home / web based business manual 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

90% of what this book covers appears in countless other books for small and home based businesses. And, I'm not so sure that the other 10% is really so revolutionary because the concept of working remotely has been around for several decades now. The authors outstanding accomplishment seems to be giving what they believe to be a revolutionary new job category a catchy name. Still, if you've been living on a distant planet, you may find their mention of the basic components, requirements and legalese of starting a business helpful.

Editorial Review:

Virtual Assistants work from home, providing everything from administrative support to high-end consulting via email, phone and fax. Predicted to be a $130 billion industry by 2008, they don't commute, they set their own hours, and they get to spend time with their kids.

Based on the highly-successful Virtual Assistant training programs Chris Durst and Michael Haaren developed for the US Armed Forces and the US Department of State, The 2-Second Commute: Join the Exploding Ranks of Freelance Virtual Assistants brings you the knowledge without the classroom!

Training program participants have billed over $30 MILLION since our training programs started in 2002. Now YOU can learn from Chris & Mike, too, and start your own successful VA business!

These phrases could get you in big trouble! 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I can only assume that the other reviewers have not cleared these phrases with any HR department--or that they are friends of the author. The classic text by James Neal IS useful, so if you are looking for phrases, consider it. I will use this one as a source for examples of dangerous appraisal comments.

Let's say you receive your performance appraisal--the one on which your pay is based. You aren't getting a raise this year and you wonder why. How would you like to see some of Ms. Bruce's phrases on your appraisal? "Is clumsy." "Has an angry personality." "Celebrates seldom." "Has skewed logic." "Is a turn-off to fellow employees." "Does not appear to have adequate support system at home." "Has come to work bruised or badly shaken emotionally." Does not know how to brainstorm, in fact brain drizzles."

I sincerely thought this was meant to be a joke book when I first read it. Many of the opinions (compared to behavioral observations) could never be proven--and even if they could, would not be valid for a performance appraisal. Furthermore, consider how unprofessional a supervisor or manager would sound using terminology like this in something that might end up in court or an employment hearing some day: "Gets way too emotional." "Puts the kibosh on positive attitudes." "Acts very suspicious of everyone, almost paranoid." "Is sometimes difficult to understand because of heavy accent or language barriers." "Would not be found guilty of integrity if it were a crime." And those are supposed to be, as the cover says, ready-to-use phrases for addressing all performance issues?

Ms. Bruce is knowledgable and capable, so I am surprised at this material. If you purchase it, do not assume all or even most of the phrases will do anything more than result in a negative evaluation for YOU. You might end up with an appraisal that says, "Is more comfortable in the victim role," "Is slow moving," "Does not read newspapers or magazines," or even, "does not appear underchallenged."

DiSC users reference 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a great little book both for those new to DiSC and old time users of this tool. Great tips for Managers who want to adapt their management style to better communicate with their employees. Tips on giving feedback, problem solving, delegating etc. Well worth the money.

Editorial Review:

Successful managers work like coaches, assessing each person's strengths and weaknesses and developing the best strategy to get the job done. The 4-Dimensional Manager shows how managers can become more effective by using the DiSC system. "DiSC" stands for four communication styles: Dominance (direct and decisive); Influence (optimistic and outgoing); Supportive (sympathetic and cooperative); and Conscientious (concerned and correct). In the book's first part, readers assess their own style, the style of the people they manage, and the style of their organization. The second part shows how to choose the most effective style (or combination of styles) for any situation, focusing on seven key areas: delegating, decision making, problem solving, motivating, complimenting, giving constructive feedback, and developing skills.

This book has been my guide for my active research project. 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 29 people found this review helpful.

This book has been both inspirational and motivational for me. I love the quotes and have used them when sending memos to people involved in my Masters active research project. The few colorful pictures are beautiful and representative of reaching high for the stars. The texture of the paper used is similar to a magazine's. I almost felt I was reading one, which felt more like leisure reading. The book is short, easy to read, and to the point. I've taken much of the advise while I've engaged as a leader in my project. I've made efforts to become a better listener, give positive feedback, inspire people to take risks, and built a bond of trust. I learned that I have to model the good habits I'd like others to practice. The strategies suggested are a must for people in the business world and adminstrators or leaders in education. The book is practical for anyone who assumes a leadership role and does not know how to begin the process. Thumbs up!

Simply the best of "Best Practices" - Invaluable 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a business process and systems analyst, I have used the techniques in this book extensively to document existing and proposed processes and systems.

The diagramming techniques ensure thorough identification of all relevant interfaces and will assist in identifying those frustrating and toxic business processes that defy verbal description, but once diagrammed, seem to become clearly understood. I cannot count how many "Ah-ha" moments I have seen when confused managers, too deep in the trees to be able to see the whole forest, finally see the problems with their business laid out in clear pictures drawn with the techniques taught in this book.

Easy to Use Handbook 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Accountability is essential to individual and organizational success, but few leaders know how to make it happen. Consequently, accountability remains at too high a level-far away from the people who really should be accountable for their work. Managers spend far too much of their valuable time chasing after details, progress reports, and hope-it-got-done worries. If there were a way to calculate the value of managerial time wasted because of our accountability deficiency, the cost would be astronomical. If you could calculate the cost to you, personally, it would far exceed the price of this book.

Miller presents his advice in a design that's easy to grasp-complete with anagram. He offers a SIMPLE system: Set expectations, Invite commitment, Measure results, Provide feedback, Link to consequences, and Evaluate effectiveness. Each of these components is explained in its own chapter, following the same format. The principle is presented, followed by an explanation of why it is important, then the how-to. Examples and checklists (good ones at the end of each chapter) strengthen the book's value.

You will gain a considerable amount of worthwhile knowledge, technique, and advice reading this book from cover to cover. However, the strongest benefit will come over time as you use this volume as a reference book, a handbook to return to for refreshers and reinforcement.

Idea: copy relevant items from the end-of-chapter checklists and use them as daily reminders that you're doing what must be done to build and maintain accountability. This is a book you'll want to keep close to your desk as an important companion.

PS-the principles will work in non-business situations, as well.

Editorial Review:

How can busy managers hold employees accountable for results they did or did not achieve? "Keeping Employees Accountable for Results" moves beyond the far-from-ideal annual performance review - which only evaluates what has already occurred, and not what the manager wants to achieve - and shows readers how to effectively manage performance on an ongoing basis. Packed with easy-to-use tools, the book gives time-pressed managers everything they need to ensure results.
