Editorial Review:

A bestselling author and business guru tells how to improve your job satisfaction and performance.

In his sixth fable, bestselling author Patrick Lencioni takes on a topic that almost everyone can relate to: the causes of a miserable job. Millions of workers, even those who have carefully chosen careers based on true passions and interests, dread going to work, suffering each day as they trudge to jobs that make them cynical, weary, and frustrated. It is a simple fact of business life that any job, from investment banker to dishwasher, can become miserable. Through the story of a CEO turned pizzeria manager, Lencioni reveals the three elements that make work miserable -- irrelevance, immeasurability, and anonymity -- and gives managers and their employees the keys to make any job more fulfilling.

As with all of Lencionis books, this one is filled with actionable advice you can put into effect immediately. In addition to the fable, the book includes a detailed model examining the three signs of job misery and how they can be remedied. It covers the benefits of managing for job fulfillment within organizations -- increased productivity, greater retention, and competitive advantage -- and offers examples of how managers can use the applications in the book to deal with specific jobs and situations.

Patrick Lencioni (San Francisco, CA) is President of The Table Group, a management consulting firm specializing in executive team development and organizational health. As a consultant and keynote speaker, he has worked with thousands of senior executives and executive teams in organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to high-tech startups to universities and nonprofits. His clients include AT&T, Bechtel, Boeing, Cisco, Sams Club, Microsoft, Mitsubishi, Allstate, Visa, FedEx, New York Life, Sprint, Novell, Sybase, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Lencioni is the author of six bestselling books, including The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. He previously worked for Oracle, Sybase, and the management consulting firm Bain & Company.

What am I missing? 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read this book at the suggestion of a counselor who is helping me through depression and lack of interest in my career. While I was touched by his insights and authenticity, I was nagged by the practical aspect (or lack thereof) of letting your life speak. Palmer seemed to have an endless amount of time and resources to find his true calling in life. How does this apply to people who struggle just to put food on the table, who lack the means to get a higher education, or who have a family to support? Palmer's journey seems to be a luxury that many can't afford. Also, he seems to gloss over the difficulties involved in discovering that you picked the wrong path- not only for the self, but for all the others involved (spouse, children, friends).

A lovely book, but too "pie in the sky" for me.

Editorial Review:

With wisdom, compassion, and gentle humor, Parker J. Palmer invites us to listen to the inner teacher and follow its leadings toward a sense of meaning and purpose. Telling stories from his own life and the lives of others who have made a difference, he shares insights gained from darkness and depression as well as fulfillment and joy, illuminating a pathway toward vocation for all who seek the true calling of their lives.

Praise For Results That Last

"Quint Studer is a superb communicator with a deep belief in the power of relationships. His informal tone, sense of humor, and real-world stories bring his business principles to life. Results That Last has a vital, optimistic quality that will keep readers re-reading long after other leadership books have been relegated to a dark corner of the shelf."

"Results That Last is long overdue and fills a big gap in effective business management. There are legions of books that show us the way to achieve successful results in business, but very few that teach us how to institutionalize success. In reality, achieving success is the easy part. Anyone who wants to make success a habit needs to read this book."
--Bob MacDonald, former CEO, Allianz Life of North America and author of Beat the System: 11 Secrets to Building an Entrepreneurial Culture in a Bureaucratic World

By standardizing certain business practices and leader behaviors, any company in any field can create an environment that allows it to achieve and sustain long-term results."

Highly recommend this book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I was late signing up with the PHR exam and I didn't have a lot of study time by the time I received this book, like a month. I used this book as my only source of information (I did graduate with my Bachelors and have worked in Staffing/HR for 9 years) and passed on my first try. I was very nervous because I kept hearing that it's difficult to pass on the first time, but this book helped me out a lot. I would recommend this to any experienced professional that is taking their PHR, I don't know about the SPHR though.

Editorial Review:

Completely revised and enhanced for the new 2007 exams, this book enables you to validate your experience and skills as an HR professional with the industry-standard PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certifications from the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). This comprehensive new edition of the top-selling PHR/SPHR Study Guide provides you expert preparation and review for these challenging exams as well as comprehensive coverage on labor relations, workforce planning, compensation, OSHA regulations.

Great Little Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

At my company we have been using this book for years. We recently hired 3 new managers and secretaries and we ordered these books for them. They love them. I personally use the book almost on a daily basis. Not only for writing performance reviews but also for everyday memos. The book is broken up in different sections depending on what type of review you are writing. I don't know what I would do with it.

Great product, fast shipping 5 out of 5 stars.

Great book - should save me tons of time when it comes time to review my staff.

A real life saver. 5 out of 5 stars.

If anyone is going to buy "only" one book to write effective rating evaluations, then this is the book you need. I highly recommend this book it's quick and to the point.

Performance Review time? Cut the time in half! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have 13 performance evaluations to complete; and 10 are for the same position. It's challenging to make them unique; but this book helped me tremendously to find the right adjectives to describe each person uniquely; as well as cutting the time in half that it normally takes to write a review. I ordered 3 more books this year to share with other managers in my department because they kept borrowing mine.

Editorial Review:

Now in its ninth edition, the guide has been continuously revised to meet changing employment conditions. This widely acclaimed handbook is a practical and valuable aid to making the completion of performance appraisals fast, easy and accurate. Combed bound.

Editorial Review:

A business parable about how companies can achieve remarkable results by helping their employees fulfill their dreams

Managing people is difficult. With disengagement and turnover on the rise, many managers are scratching their heads wondering what to do. It’s not that we don’t dream of being great managers, it’s just that we haven’t found a practical and efficient way to do it. Until now . . .

The fictional company in this remarkable book is grappling with real problems of high turnover and low morale -- so the managers begin to investigate what really drives the employees. What they discover is that the key to motivation isn’t necessarily the promise of a bigger paycheck or title, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. They also learned that people at every level need to be offered specific kinds of help and encouragement -- or our dreams will forever remain just dreams as we grow dissatisfied with our lives and jobs.

Beginning with his important thought that a company can only become the-best-version-of-itself to the extent that its employees are becoming better-versions-of-themselves, Matthew Kelly explores the connection between the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we all engage at work. Tackling head-on the growing problem of employee disengagement, Kelly explores the dynamic collaboration that is unleashed when people work together to achieve company objectives and personal dreams.

The power of The Dream Manager is that simply becoming aware of the concept will change the way you manage and relate to people instantly and forever. What’s your dream?

If you are interested in learning more about coaching someone on how to have a fuller live and/or achieve their goals this is a great book for you. I also strongly recommend taking the Co-Active Coaching classes offered by the Coaches Training Institute. During each level of the classes I felt I had learned so much about coaching, myself and all of the wonderful folks in my classes that even if I wasn't studying to become a coach, this program was so well worth it.

This is a MUST have! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The is quite simply the best book on resume writing I've ever read. I've worked in HR for over 20 years, and I've never seen anything like this. Well worth the money. So far, I've used this book to write four resumes for family and friends, all of which have resulted in jobs.

If I could have given this book 7 stars, I would have.

Resume magic 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is phenominal! It is simple to read and has a workable plan to constructing a simple resume that works with your cover letter.

Excellent examples, treats the subject in depth 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I checked this book out of the local library, and realized it was worth buying for long-term reference. The thing I like best about the book is the way it speaks to the basic question "Why do I write a resume?" Most treatments just show you how; this one shows you what you're trying to accomplish with a resume and how best to do that. It has many specific examples, too--so that when you're finished, you have a document that can accomplish what the resume can accomplish in today's world of work.

Editorial Review:

Filled with "before and after" resume examples that not only teach the author's special techniques but also show why they work, "Resume Magic" divulges the secrets of better resume writing from an expert with more than a decade of experience producing powerful, effective resumes.
