Excellent help for managers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Running my own small business, the one area that is always an issue for me is dealing with employee performance problems. Having read some of Paul Falcone's other books and finding them really helpful, clear and understandable, I bought this.

This is an excellent book, with very straightforward and useful help on how to handle this thorny issue - the structure makes it easy to dip an and out of as neeeded, and It's becoming a trusty guide, which always has a place on my desk.

Highly, highly recomended for managers looking for help with these kinds of issues - don't run a business without it!

from 1998- almost a decade old 2 out of 5 stars.

This book was published in 1998 and you can tell. While there are a few good examples and verbiage that can be used again, it is ultimately outdated. Take it from a practicing HR professional; you cannot use the majority of these in your workplace. You may be able to use the ideas and reasoning behind the documents, but the verbiage will need updated.

Editorial Review:

Containing 101 simulated write-ups for handling disciplinary problems in a sensible and legally grounded way, this book aims to cut out the speculative and fretful legal second-guessing behind common work performance problems.

Must read for every one... 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Of the several books I have studied on similar topics, this was one of the easiest to read through and apply. Although the title says People Styles at Work, it is equally applicable in personal life as well. The focus on studying behavior and inferring "style" from the same is much easier accomplished than trying to figure out the "temprament style" based on Myers Briggs.

The two dimensions of Assertiveness and Responsiveness, and the concept of above / below the middle for each of these dimensions gives 4 quadrants; one for each of the styles. This makes it convenient to understand the 4 styles, and also the shades within the styles.

I have benefited tremendously - if you are new to this topic it will serve you well to take notes as you read; create a cheat sheet of the characteristics for each style. Then for some time carry the cheat sheet with you, and refer to it often as you observe people's behaviors. Over a period of time, you will pickup the nuances of how to recognize the styles, and succeed in your interactions with others - despite them, and despite yourself... Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

This text asserts that it is possible to overcome personality conflicts by understanding other people's differences instead of merely reacting to them emotionally. It presents a behavioural science model for understanding four different "people styles", and explains how readers can: identify their own style and how they appear to others; relate effectively - no matter how others react to them; create common ground with different people while retaining their own individuality; and evaluate other people's "people styles" and discover how to "flex" their style to match.

Good mix of factoids, inspiration and leadership pointers 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Building on the successful formula of his earlier work, author John C. Maxwell (The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership) has delineated 17 "laws" for managers who want to develop successful teams. That number may be arbitrary, but Maxwell successfully uses his laws as a springboard to weave together inspiring tales from Navy Seals, mountain climbers, Colin Powell, George Washington, Jimmy Carter, major league coaches and others into punchy chapters that any aspiring leader can use. This book provides the right mix of factoids, inspiration and leadership pointers to make it a bestseller. Even better, coaches and leaders who use these tips should be able to build better teams. We recommend this book to coaches, mentors and team leaders.

Great change 5 out of 5 stars.

If your workplace feels like a battle zone and colleagues sometimes act like adversaries, you ore not alone. Today four generations glare at one another across the conference table, and the potential for conflict and confusion has never been greater.

  • Traditionalist employees with their "heads down, onward and upward" attitude live out a work ethic shaped during the Great Depression.
  • Eighty million Baby Boomers vacillate between their overwhelming need to succeed and their growing desire to slow down and enjoy life.
  • Generation Xers try to prove themselves constantly yet dislike the image of being overly ambitious, disrespectful, and irreverent.
  • Millennials, new to the workforce, mix savvy with social conscience and promise to further change the business landscape.

This insightful book provides hands-on methods to close the generation gaps. With effective tools to recruit, retain, motivate, and manage each generation, you can now create teamwork, not war, in today's highperformance workplace . . . where at any age, productivity is what counts.

Revealing interview questions...and how to use them 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Selecting the right person for a job is both an art and a science. To help you improve your chances of finding the right person, author Victoria A. Hoevemeyer proposes that human resource departments and hiring managers should ask applicants explicit questions about their skills and behavior. This approach, known as "Competency-Based Behavioral Interviewing" (CBBI), provides a clear picture of what candidates actually did in their previous jobs. Hoevemeyer's sensible idea is that if candidates succeeded at certain tasks before, they'll repeat their success in their new jobs. She provides a very long list of detailed questions that hiring managers can use to learn the specifics of candidates' skills and past performance. However, the book lacks proof that the CBBI process actually results in recruiting new hires who perform well and have better retention rates. Still, since Hoevemeyer's approach clearly elicits rich information, we believe that managers and even experienced HR professionals may find her interviewing tactics useful.

Editorial Review:

"High-Impact Interview Questions" introduces readers to the ultimate strategy for hiring the right person, every time - behavior-based interviewing. By asking applicants to "tell me about a time..." employers can better determine whether individuals possess the skills required for the job. By developing and using behavior-based interview questions that ask applicants to describe specific situations from their own experience, organisations can save both time and money by hiring the right person faster and seriously decrease employee turnover. But developing such questions can be time consuming and difficult. The book helps readers measure for the exact skills they're looking for, giving them tons of questions to use or adapt for their own purposes.

Never an easy task 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 28 people found this review helpful.

For the first time I am reviewing a book that I did not completely read. In fact, I read only the first two chapters. But at the time--several years ago, those were the only chapters I needed. Robert M. Bramson, management consultant, found that the number one problem in all the businesses he worked with was people trying to cope with difficult people. So he wrote this book.

He identifies six types of difficult people:
Hostile-aggressives: those who bully and throw tantrums to get their way;
Complainers: those who gripe incessantly but do nothing to change things;
Super-Agreeables: those who are supportive and agreeable but fail to follow through;
Silent and Unresponsives: those who respond to every question with yep, no, or a grunt;
Negativists: those who deflate any optimism you have;
Know-It-All Experts: those who know everything about anything worth knowing-- their goal is to make you feel worthless;
Indecisives: those who stall major decisions until they are made for them, often causing loss of jobs and opportunities.

The problem I had to work with was the Hostile-Agressive, of which there are three types: the Sherman Tank, the Sniper, and the Exploder. The Sniper makes deeply cutting comments under the guise of humor so that the victim is always slightly off-balance. Was it a joke or not? The Sherman Tank bullies verbally and physically if necessary to see that things go his way. He can be very intimidating. The Exploder is frightening in his vociferous behavior. Of the three the Exploder is the only one who cannot be persuaded to calm down. The victim must wait for that.

The husband, now ex-husband, was the Exploder and also a Complainer, Negativist, and a Know-It-All. The most difficult to deal with is the Exploder. Once he started, his temper and voice became louder and louder. The first step in dealing with this behavior is to get their attention by saying STOP! Stop!. That never worked for me. I thought surely if I break into his monolog he would stop and listen to me. He just got louder and louder. If I yelled, he yelled louder. If I talked, he demanded that I stop sassing him.

The method that always worked for me was to allow him time to calm down. The best way for him to achieve that calmness was that I leave the house. I would drive around for at least 30 minutes, then return home. He was always over his tantrum and usually friendly. He never apologized for anything (it was ALWAYS my fault). We would just start talking again as if nothing had happened. The big deal is that this method worked every time. He needed to be away from interaction with other people until his anger faded.

I have recommended this book to a number of people over the years and tout its efficacy in working with difficult people, especially the Exploders.

This would be a great book for a new trainer, but not for a seasoned professional. There are not enough "fun" games in this book. Many of the games are just meant intiate a discussion about a topic. I was under the impression that the games would be more interactive.

Good for basics 4 out of 5 stars.

Administrative Assistant & Secretary Handbook 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Overall not bad. I ordered the book because I discovered general clerical tasks such as envelope & letter formats, answering phones, taking messages were not common knowledge to highschool graduates. This book gave our receptionist who had no office/clerical training good guidlines to follow. The computer section is outdated.
