Several key misstatements & omissions 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Although this book covers a lot of ground and is fairly readable, two misstatements and one key omission may actually lead to some bad decisions:
a) The book says there is a 10% tax penalty for withdrawals from a qualified plan (such as 401k) under age 59.5 unless one of a list of exceptions apply..one of which is "leaving a job involuntarily after you reach age 55". But there is no penalty for withdrawals under those circumstances if you leave voluntarily and the rule is that you turn 55 that year (you can retire earlier than your birthday).
b) The book says "when you decide on an age for retirement...there is no going back". Actually if you file a "withdrawal of claim" and pay back the benefits you've recieved, you get a fresh start.
c) A very important option for married couples: if a dependent (i.e. lower earning) spouse wants to start collecting the spouse benefit but the primary earner wants to defer collecting, that can be done (the primary earner has to "file and suspend" for his benefit). A couple of recent studies have demonstrated that this is oftern the best option.

In combination, I think these defects really impair the usefulness of the book.

Many errors prevent text from being good as it could be 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I rate this text 3 because if the errors in this book were corrected, it would be a very good book. I'm a Registered Nurse, taking an online Medical Coding course that uses this book and it's associated online course. Although this textbook has many good aspects (good illustrations, good practice problems, and others), there are also some troublesome problems. The main problem is that there are numerous errors in both the text and the online course, including wrong medical definitions, descriptions, and explanations; wrong answers in the answer key to practice problems; inconsistencies; many others. This may not be as big a problem if the student has a teacher to clarify. But if you are taking an online course, you are reading the entire text and course and you are relying heavily on the text for your understanding of the material. Since I can't be sure if my answer is wrong or the book is wrong, I have spent precious time tracking down correct answers and information, which eats up the time I have for learning this material. I noticed there are two RN's on the Editorial Review Board for this text, and frankly I am shocked that RN's endorsed these printed errors. I am using the 2005 edition, which appears to be a 6th edition, so I'm wondering why the publisher hasn't done a more responsible job of editing by now. If you aren't a nurse or doctor, the errors in this text will misinform you, confuse you, and/or steer you in the wrong direction in medical coding.

Under No Circumstances Should You Buy This Book! 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Predicated upon the glowing description of the "Exam Cram Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam" test manual, I decided to purchase it to
augment other test guides in preparation for my upcoming Property/Casualty
Insurance Producer's exam.

I have no complaint with the book itself; with the exception of no state-specific material, it seems fairly comprehensive.

I do, however, have a serious complaint about the CD-ROM Exam Simulator
which is inoperable, based upon an evaluation generated by the CD itself,
indicating that all but one of the .dll files had not been loaded.

I contacted Pearson's (the publisher's) Customer Service department, and
was given several different options, one of which was to send (1) the original receipt from Amazon (fortunately, I made copies); (2) a Xerox of the back cover, showing the ISBN number; and (3) my name, address, and
phone number.

Trustingly, I sent these data, assuming Pearson would send me a fully-loaded CD-ROM which I could use on my computer.

Naturally, they did no such thing, instead, counselling me to "return the book to Amazon for a refund or an exchange." (I informed them that the fault lay with them - not Amazon - and exchanging the book might cause me to receive another CD-ROM that was equally defective.)

My last e-mail to them was March 26th; to date, I have not heard from Pearson, and probably never will.

I told them that it was foolish to incur the ill-will of a customer who
might have given them repeat business, but evidently, the customer's sensibilities (over a defective product) are of little moment to a publishing conglomerate.

I shall keep the book (because I need it), but the memory of their bad faith shall live on, in this negative review.

Take heed from my bad experience before you consider purchasing a book
with an Exam Simulator that can't be used - nor will the company have the graciousness, or the common sense, to replace.

Editorial Review:

If you are preparing for a career in property and casualty insurance, you need to pick up a copy of Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Cram. You will quickly learn the concepts, laws, rate calculations and state and federal regulations that will be covered on the exam. You'll also receive a CD that includes a fully-customizable test engine, detailed score report and state-specific law supplement. No matter where you are taking your exam or which area you need to focus on in your studies, Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam Cram is your smartest way to get certified.

The Wedge is about winning, not selling 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Wedge process works. It's a proven way to compete and win clients based on proactive services. If you're looking to move your sales force away from the death spiral of price-based competition, read this book.

A Winning Approach Well Worth The Investment 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The background context is clearly the insurance industry, with the ever present incumbent, but regardless of the product or service the competition is always close by, and the lessons in this book are applicable to all sales. Organized into eleven chapters in three sections, along with an appendix, the author explains the limitations and drawbacks of traditional approaches, how the Wedge approach is much more positive and successful, and the why. It reinforces the requirement that the sales professionals have to do their homework, know and understand the prospect's viewpoint, and ties in very well with consultative selling. With examples and method maps as training aids, easy to read, the lessons in this book are well worth studying and practicing.

Really only for insurance sales people 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I bought this book, I was not aware that the basis for the book was really just from the insurance perspective. I was hoping that his "Wedge" technique would have been more universal, but I do not think it is. So, if you are in the financial or service sectors, this book should work for you; but if not, I would skip it and try some others.

advanced, comprehensive treatment 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As financial instruments become ever more complex, McDonald's book gives a systematic treatment of the most common forms of derivatives. Providing a unified etymology that can help you understand how they work.

He groups options (puts and calls) with forward contracts like zero coupon bonds. Through numerous simple payoff graphs, as well as explanatory accompanying text, the ideas are easily grasped. The book starts with these ideas in its early chapters. Then it builds on them, to illustrate associated and often more elaborate constructs, as in insurance strategies for hedging.

Nor is the discussion confined to minimising one's risk. There is an alternative method, of deliberately speculating on volatility, for example.

The modelling of futures and options pricing is dealt with in detail. Including the seminal Black-Scholes formula and related analysis. The assumptions behind Black-Scholes are examined in detail, given the crucial influence of this on many types of pricing. The treatment gets rather advanced, invoking ideas like Monte Carlo simulations of stock prices.

The text is well suited for a graduate program in finance.

Editorial Review:

Presents the sometimes challenging world of futures, options, and other derivatives in an accessible, cohesive, and intuitive manner. Includes insights into pricing models, a tiered approach to mathematics, and an applied emphasis.

Editorial Review:

Proposals to reform the health care system typically focus on either increasing private insurance or expanding government-sponsored plans. Guaranteeing that everyone is insured, however, does not create a system with the quality of care patients want, the flexibility clinicians need, and the internal dynamics to continually improve the value of health care.

In Total Cure, Hal Luft presents a comprehensive new proposal, SecureChoice, which does all that while providing affordable health insurance for every American. SecureChoice is a plan that restructures payment for medical care, harnessing the flexibility and responsiveness of the market by aligning the incentives of clinicians, hospitals, and insurers with those of the patient. It uses the accountability of government to ensure transparency, competition, and equity.

SecureChoice has two major components. A universal pool covers the major risks of hospitalization and chronic illness, which account for almost two-thirds of all costs. Everyone would be in the pool, irrespective of employment, income, or health status. The second component emphasizes choice, flexibility, and responsibility. People will be able to choose any physician to serve as their “medical home,” to keep track of their health records, provide much of their care, and suggest referrals. Clinicians will have the information and incentives to continually enhance quality. SecureChoice also facilitates improvements in areas ranging from malpractice to pharmaceuticals and establishes new roles for key stakeholders such as health insurers.
