I had to purchase this as it is required for a class, but even our teacher admits that the book is not that great. It's a very boring read, indeed.

I read most if not all of the reviews after clicking product reviews for the January 2008 version. Is there no product review of this January 2008 version or does it contain the same informatiion as the 2006 version?

Trusted by medical insurance specialists for more than 30 years, Insurance Handbook for the Medical Office helps you excel at all aspects of insurance billing for a full range of today's health care plans. This edition helps you keep pace with industry changes, featuring the latest information on HIPAA regulations, diagnostic coding, procedural coding, office and insurance collection strategies, Medicare, and more. The accompanying Student Workbook with CD-ROM (sold separately) lets you practice "real world" billing with patient simulations using Altapoint and the Student Software Challenge.

  • Procedural (CPT and HCPCS) and diagnostic (ICD-9-CM) coding and documentation are emphasized, since they are the keystones to obtaining maximum reimbursement.
  • Key terms are bolded at first mention, explained within the context of the discussion, and defined in the glossary.
  • Separate chapters on Electronic Data Interchange and HIPAA Compliance and Privacy in Insurance Billing provide essential knowledge of electronic claims filing, informing you of submission guidelines used in the majority of medical offices today.
  • Icons clearly identify each insurance payer with a specific color and graphic, making specific information easy to locate.
  • Compliance features located at appropriate points throughout most chapters offer tips to ensure compliance with correct billing and coding practice, particularly HIPAA and OIG.
  • A separate chapter on documentation in the medical office describes how proper documentation can prevent penalties and refund requests, and help you prove compliance in the case of an audit or review.
  • Detailed examples and samples of completed insurance forms show you how to apply knowledge in the real world.
  • Emphasis on the business of running a medical office highlights the importance of the medical insurance specialist's role in filing clean claims, solving problems that do occur, and collecting overdue payments.
  • Service to Patient feature throughout the chapters focuses on ways to provide quality service to the patient as well as your co-workers.

  • All content has been reviewed by industry experts and meticulously updated to reflect recent changes in insurance claim filing.
  • In addition to the list of key terms at the beginning of each chapter, a separate list of key abbreviations clarifies common terms identified in the field primarily by their abbreviations.
  • Key points at the end of each chapter briefly summarize important chapter content to help you better understand the subject matter.

Great companion while studying for test! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book really was an asset in preparing for the state test. It was very informative and I would agree with the other review that stated that its information was better than what the class offered. The chapter quizzes were very good and the explanations of WHY the answers were what they were helped a lot. It didn't just give you the correct A, B, C, D answer - it went on to define the reasonings. I used the CD that came with it along with the readings and found them helpful. This is a great book to have at your side when taking the class. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

You no longer need a traditional employer plan to get good, affordable health insurance. The New Health Insurance Solution can help you cut your health insurance costs in half if:
  • You're self-employed, an independent contractor, or your employer doesn't provide health insurance (you can probably get coverage on your own for about $94/month—a fraction of what an employer would have to pay for the same coverage)
  • You are employed and pay extra to cover your spouse or children under your employer-sponsored plan—you may save 50% by taking them off your employer plan
  • You own a small business and are getting killed by double-digit premium increases—you can now give employees tax-free money to buy their own plans and get your company out of the health insurance business

The book also explains in detail the best solutions for you if:

  • You can't find affordable health insurance because you or a child have an expensive preexisting medical problem (your state has a program to provide you with guaranteed coverage )
  • You're currently putting money into an IRA or a 401(k)—because you don't realize that an HSA is always a better option
  • You're unsure how you or your parents will be able to afford health insurance during retirement, or how to maximize benefits from Medicare—including the new Part D prescription drug plan

The New Health Insurance Solution is the definitive guide to the new ways every American can now get affordable health care—without an employer.

Several key misstatements & omissions 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Although this book covers a lot of ground and is fairly readable, two misstatements and one key omission may actually lead to some bad decisions:
a) The book says there is a 10% tax penalty for withdrawals from a qualified plan (such as 401k) under age 59.5 unless one of a list of exceptions apply..one of which is "leaving a job involuntarily after you reach age 55". But there is no penalty for withdrawals under those circumstances if you leave voluntarily and the rule is that you turn 55 that year (you can retire earlier than your birthday).
b) The book says "when you decide on an age for retirement...there is no going back". Actually if you file a "withdrawal of claim" and pay back the benefits you've recieved, you get a fresh start.
c) A very important option for married couples: if a dependent (i.e. lower earning) spouse wants to start collecting the spouse benefit but the primary earner wants to defer collecting, that can be done (the primary earner has to "file and suspend" for his benefit). A couple of recent studies have demonstrated that this is oftern the best option.

In combination, I think these defects really impair the usefulness of the book.

Many errors prevent text from being good as it could be 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I rate this text 3 because if the errors in this book were corrected, it would be a very good book. I'm a Registered Nurse, taking an online Medical Coding course that uses this book and it's associated online course. Although this textbook has many good aspects (good illustrations, good practice problems, and others), there are also some troublesome problems. The main problem is that there are numerous errors in both the text and the online course, including wrong medical definitions, descriptions, and explanations; wrong answers in the answer key to practice problems; inconsistencies; many others. This may not be as big a problem if the student has a teacher to clarify. But if you are taking an online course, you are reading the entire text and course and you are relying heavily on the text for your understanding of the material. Since I can't be sure if my answer is wrong or the book is wrong, I have spent precious time tracking down correct answers and information, which eats up the time I have for learning this material. I noticed there are two RN's on the Editorial Review Board for this text, and frankly I am shocked that RN's endorsed these printed errors. I am using the 2005 edition, which appears to be a 6th edition, so I'm wondering why the publisher hasn't done a more responsible job of editing by now. If you aren't a nurse or doctor, the errors in this text will misinform you, confuse you, and/or steer you in the wrong direction in medical coding.

Editorial Review:

Proposals to reform the health care system typically focus on either increasing private insurance or expanding government-sponsored plans. Guaranteeing that everyone is insured, however, does not create a system with the quality of care patients want, the flexibility clinicians need, and the internal dynamics to continually improve the value of health care.

In Total Cure, Hal Luft presents a comprehensive new proposal, SecureChoice, which does all that while providing affordable health insurance for every American. SecureChoice is a plan that restructures payment for medical care, harnessing the flexibility and responsiveness of the market by aligning the incentives of clinicians, hospitals, and insurers with those of the patient. It uses the accountability of government to ensure transparency, competition, and equity.

SecureChoice has two major components. A universal pool covers the major risks of hospitalization and chronic illness, which account for almost two-thirds of all costs. Everyone would be in the pool, irrespective of employment, income, or health status. The second component emphasizes choice, flexibility, and responsibility. People will be able to choose any physician to serve as their “medical home,” to keep track of their health records, provide much of their care, and suggest referrals. Clinicians will have the information and incentives to continually enhance quality. SecureChoice also facilitates improvements in areas ranging from malpractice to pharmaceuticals and establishes new roles for key stakeholders such as health insurers.
