Lucid, informed, and on point 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'll cut to the chase. This is one of the best books I have yet read on the subprime mortgage situation. The narrative is clear and specific, explanations sufficient without getting lost in excessive technicalities. The set of recommendations is practical and well based in the author's extensive experience and observations. No one book gives the whole picture, but Confessions of a Subprime Lender should be on every recommended reading list for those interested in the subject, in my opinion. (The Trillion Dollar Meltdown belongs on the same list.)

Editorial Review:

Former subprime lender Richard Bitner once worked in an industry that started out helping disadvantaged customers but collapsed due to greed, lack of financial control and willful ignorance. In Confessions of a Subprime Lender: An Insider's Tale of Greed, Fraud, and Ignorance, he reveals the truth about how the subprime lending business spiraled out of control, pushed home prices to unsustainable levels, and turned unqualified applicants into qualified borrowers through creative financing. Learn about the ways the mortgage industry can be fixed with his twenty suggestions for critical change.

Editorial Review:

From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.

Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”

Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

A front row seat into the world of high-stakes commercial real estate investing

“A must-read book … one of the best real estate investment books I have ever read. On my scale of 1 to 10, this unique book rates an off-the-charts 12.” ---Robert Bruss

Confessions of a Real Estate Entrepreneur is for the individual who is ready to get serious about investing. Not a rah-rah or get-rich-quick book, this book is for someone who is prepared to think about what he or she wants to accomplish. James Randel provides the how and why.

James Randel has been a successful investor and educator for 25 years. He teaches investing through stories and anecdotes – bringing to the limelight not just his successes (and there are some amazing stories of these) but also his mistakes. His candor is instructive and entertaining.

It is said that “those who can, do, and those who can’t, teach.” James Randel is a rare exception as he is both a highly successful investor as well as an excellent teacher. As said by Jeff Dunne, Vice Chairman of the largest real estate company in the world, CB Richard Ellis:

“I’ve tracked Jimmy’s incredible run of successful real estate investments for 20 years and more recently invested very profitably with him. His new book is a must read for anyone interested in real estate investing.”

If you are tired of the “same old, same old” and prepared to play in the big leagues, this book is calling your name.

Editorial Review:

"This book is designed for realty investors who want to profit from buying below market, making cosmetic improvements to add value, and then quickly reselling. But real estate agents and home buyers should also study it because of the valuable insights offered by a longtime, very successful real estate broker. On my scale of one to 10, this superb book rates an off-the-chart 12."
Robert Bruss

You've probably seen TV shows like Flip This House and Flip That House, in which Real estate investors buy, renovate, and sell a house in a matter of weeks for tens of thousands of dollars in profit. They make flipping houses look so easy that you want to jump out of your recliner (during the next commercial, of course), run down the street, find a house for sale, flip it for a 50 percent profit, and run back home to continue watching the show.

I, Ralph Roberts, have flipped hundreds of houses, and it's never as easy as it looks on TV. People don't generally line up at your front door begging you to buy their house for 30-50 percent below market value. Renovation expenses always exceed estimates. And you can't always sell a house for what you think it's worth.

Flipping houses for a profit requires time, money, and what I like to call sticktoitism—dogged determination in the face of overwhelming uncertainty.

Not just another house flipping book

You can find plenty of books about flipping houses that claim "anyone can do it" and make flipping look easy and risk-free. Flipping Houses For Dummies takes a different approach—honesty. We don't claim that flipping houses is "easy" or "simple" or "risk-free," because, quite frankly, it isn't.

Flipping Houses For Dummies reveals the risks and rewards of flipping properties; helps you determine whether you have the time, energy, cash, and other resources to be successful; and then conveys the expert knowledge that those who wish to pursue house flipping need in order to minimize risk and maximize potential profits in a very competitive market. Did you know?

Most books on flipping houses gloss over the key factors that that make or break the novice house flipper. These are the very items we focus on in Flipping Houses For Dummies. For example, did you know:

  • You should secure financing before you look at houses.
  • As a flipper, you want dontwanners—houses that the owners obviously don't want.
  • You make your profit when you buy the property. You realize your profit when you sell.
  • Always plan on earning at least 20 percent after your total investment—purchase price, repairs and renovations, real estate agent commissions, and holding costs (monthly mortgage payments, insurance, property taxes, and utilities).
  • Working with a top-notch real estate agent can save you thousands of dollars more than what you pay in commissions.
  • You should choose a limited geographical area to work and then become an expert on the houses and property values in that area.
  • Your goal when renovating a home should be to bring the property up to market standards, not exceed them.
A flipping book for real people

Flipping Houses For Dummies speaks to the mom and pop investor, steering you clear of the gray areas, which tend to carry high-risks and low-returns, into safer, more potentially profitable areas. We encourage you invest in your comfort zone and take on bigger, riskier projects with higher profit potential only when you're ready.

In Flipping Houses For Dummies we stress that the first flip is the most important one, and we take the guesswork out of the first transaction, to lead you through a positive first experience on which to build a promising real estate investment portfolio.

Flipping Houses For Dummies provides plenty of examples of successful and not-so-successful property flips, presenting the total investment (in time and money), the work involved, and the net profit. Before-and-after photos visually illustrate the positive transformations from run-down-shacks to showcase homes.

The proof is in the testimonials that have arrived by the thousands: "This is a really great book. It's simple. It's straightforward. We read it. We ran our ad. We got over 100 telephone calls. We sold our home."—John Henke, Boise, ID. "Our real estate broker was green with envy. In 5 days we got 24 bids higher than the highest bid she got us in 11 1/2 years. You're our hero!"—Elizabeth & Tim Hunter, South Berwick, ME. "I had a business opportunity I couldn't take advantage of unless I sold my home immediately. I saw your book in a bookstore and sold my home the next weekend. Thanks!"—Doug Walker, Salt Lake City, UT. "Thanks to your system I sold my home in 5 days at $1.26 million. You saved me $78,000 in real estate commission!"—V., Potomac, MD.

Now in its third edition and timed perfectly to address a challenging real estate market, How to Sell Your Home in 5 Days turns the conventional on its head to present an innovative, practical, and foolproof alternative that makes the market work for you, the seller. Based on the one basic truth of free enterprise—that your home is worth exactly what the highest bidder will pay for it— this step-by-step plan shows exactly how to price your home attractively; make a timetable; write an effective ad; use buyer psychology, price points, and magic numbers to get the best price; and conduct round-robin bidding. It includes new information on the Internet—including a supporting website, www.5-day.com—the most recent testimonials, and updates to every phase of the process, from whether or not to renovate a kitchen before selling to the ins and outs of transferring ownership. Homes sold through the five-day plan sell for an average of 5% more than through conventional sales, plus, the seller doesn't have to pay a broker's fee—making this book among the best deals of the century.
