Cecil is once agaon THE textbook of medicine 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The new Cecil (23rd edition) set a new high standard for an Internal Medicine Textbook. Up until now Harrison has been my standard textbook but with the 23rd Cecil, I have to say:" Hasta la vista, Harrison" . I have been using it for the past few weeks and I must say I am very impressed.

The quality of printing is superb; the book is filled with color figures, useful algorithms (better than UptoDate's), beautifical clinical pictures, and highly intelligent use of color text. Of course, the authors of such an important textbook are the Who's who in medicine, but the style of writing is not as condescending as Harrison's. The therapy section of each disorder is also highly practical and highly current. The use of the principle of evidence based medicine and the incorporation of treatment guidelines made this textbook highly modern. Even psychosocial oriented practitioners will enjoy the psychiatry chapter in this book: the discussion of psychopharmacology of various disorders is deep without being long-winded.

I have been using Medstudy for my board recertification, but now I am spending more time flipping through Cecil than any other Internal Medicine books. For day to day use in the clinic, UptoDate is slightly more up-to-date. But for learning and studying, Cecil is much more practical and it is an extremely good-buy. I just love those algorithms.

Drs. Goldman and Ausiello, thank you for your wonderful book. And now Harrison's editors have to try to play catch up with your excellant work. Residents will soon be quoting from Cecil's rather than Harrison's in morning round as the ultimate authority in Internal Medicine.

Editorial Review:

For years scientists have searched for a "magic bullet" to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- safe enough for nursing mothers, children with ADHD, and the elderly, without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Now the search may finally be over, thanks to the Omega-3 Renewal Plan, introduced here by Andrew L. Stoll, M.D., Director of the Psycho-pharmacology Research Laboratory at Harvard's McLean Hospital.

In his groundbreaking research, Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, play a crucial role in mental health -- regulating and en-hancing mood, sharpening memory, and even aiding concentration and learning. And these remarkable substances, so essential to our health, are found abundantly in common fish oils and other sources.

The bad news is that even though omega-3 fatty acids have played a critical role in our evolutionary past, these extraordinary substances have been depleted by our Western diet and lifestyle, and the resulting nutritional imbalance seems to have led to a sharp rise in heart disease and depression. By contrast, in Japan and other countries where fish consumption is high, both heart disease and depression rates are low. Stoll explains how easily omega-3s can be used up in just a few generations, and how a new mother with depleted omega-3s loses still more to her baby -- a fact that may account for the severe postpartum depression so many women suffer. He documents evidence that a shortage of omega-3s may also play a role in attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other learning problems. The good news is that this downward spiral of depletion and depression can finally be reversed.

In his revolutionary Omega-3 Renewal Plan, Dr. Stoll presents readers for the first time with all the tools for restoring their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including which foods to eat and how to choose the most effective over-the-counter supplements. Featuring information on how to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans, and including simple recipes as well as supplement dosages and sources, The Omega-3 Connection offers an entirely new, practical method for improving mental health.

Awesome Pocket Book Guide - Great for those in Dietetics 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm currently a Dietetic Intern. This book has been, and still is, a useful pocket book guide that I use everyday for my internship. The book has almost all the medications that I currently deal with in my clinical rotation. The type of information that this book gives are as follows:

1. Alternative Name(s)
2. The drug's affect
3. Diet (with our without food), what foods to avoid with the med (ie. grapefruit)
4. Oral/GI affects
5. S/Conds
6. Affects on Pregnancy
7. Blood/Serum affects
8. Urinary affects
9. What to monitor
10. Ways to be adminstered (the drug)
11. and more

Additionally, the book provides (what I find to be very useful) are Lab Values, their normal ranges, and reasons why they might be elevated or below normal limits.

There is more within this pocket guide.

The only thing I don't like is that it says "Pocket Guide"; it's not really that small, it's quite big. Don't expect it to fit in your pant pocket. It will fit in your lab coat pocket, but it's quite still big. I suggest to carry it with your binder. Just don't misplace it; I've done it many times already on the different hospital floors.

I highly recommend this food and drug medication guide -- especially those in the dietetics profession.

As a third year pharmacy student, I am particularly impressed with the organization and conciseness of this guidebook to non-prescription products. This text is simple to follow, for health care professionals and also the average consumer who has questions and concerns about medications that they are buying over-the-counter.

The Bible for Any Dialysis Patient 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis. This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well. It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc. The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

Editorial Review:

The thoroughly revised and updated Third Edition of this popular handbook provides practical, accessible information on all aspects of dialysis. This edition's section on hemodialysis features expanded chapters on physiologic principles, acute hemodialysis, urea kinetic modeling, and vascular access. The section on peritoneal dialysis has been extensively reworked by a new editor and includes two new chapters. The clinical discussions include frequent references to the National Kidney Foundation's Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative (DOQI) guidelines. Each chapter provides references to relevant Web sites.
