Editorial Review:

In a devastating exposé in the tradition of Silent Spring and Fast Food Nation, investigative journalist Randall Fitzgerald warns how thousands of man-made chemicals in our food, water, medicine, and environment are making humans the most polluted species on the planet. A century ago in 1906, when Congress enacted the Pure Food and Drug Act, Americans were promised “better living through chemistry.” Fitzgerald provides overwhelming evidence to shatter this myth, and many others perpetrated by the chemical, pharmaceutical, and processed foods industries. In the face of this national health crisis, Fitzgerald also presents informed and practical suggestions for what we can do to turn the tide and live healthier lives.

Consider this:
• The average American carries a “body burden” of 700 synthetic chemicals
• Chemicals in tap water can cause reproductive abnormalities and hermaphroditic birth
• A 2005 study of lactating women in eighteen U.S. states found perchlorate (a toxic component of rocket fuel) in practically every mother’s breast milk

Tomorrow Never Knows 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Since there is so much talk about the Beatles song, Tomorrow Never Knows, I have decided to use it as the 'working title' of this review.

We don't know what tomorrow will bring. It is a bit audacious on our part to even think that there might even be a tomorrow because all supposed tomorrows are simply extensions of our today.

I picked this book up in a used bookstore in San Francisco. I was at a crossroads in my life. I thought I really wanted to move up to the Bay Area for good. I thought that Southern California offered me as much as it possibly could, but now it was time to move to a different, higher part of the state.

What it was really time for was to move to a different, higher state of consciousness. It wasn't necessarily Southern California that wasn't offering anything more to my life, I wasn't offering anything more to my life. I was in a slump creatively, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually and you know what they say what the difference is between a slump and a grave --- about six feet.

Fortunately (or unfortunately according to some of my family members) I came across the three musketeers; Ralph Metzner, Richard Alpert, and Timothy Leary. I had long been interested in LDS but I wasn't ready to give up coffee and I didn't realy believe in polygamy...oh, wait, that's Latter Day Saints...I meant, LSD...lysergic acid diethylamide...Albert Hoffman's "problem child".

I had already been meditating and deeply studying Spirituality/metaphysics for a few years and I had many breakthroughs in many areas of my life, but like I said earlier, I felt I was in a slump. Maybe I should've just kept on doing it the 'old fashioned way' because psychedelics may promise enlightenment, but like most drugs do, they tend to lie.

I did my first and only session the right way, with a guide who has been through the process herself. We picked out appropriate music and she read me passages from this book.

The woman who was guiding me was slowly morphing into a beautiful crystal being. I could literally look through her and see the Pure Love that she was made in and out of as she read:

"O John
The time has come for you to seek new levels of reality.
Your ego and the John game are about to cease.
You are about to be set face to face with the Clear Light
You are about to experience it in its reality.
In the ego-free state, wherein all things are like the void and cloudless sky,
And the naked spotless intellect is like a transparent vacuum;
At this moment, know yourself and abide in that state..."

I began to realize, with Real Eyes, that everything I ever knew was 'made up'. I never saw life the way it truly was, I only saw it as I was. I could feel myself dying while at the same time I could feel my true SELF coming forth...

"O John
That which is called ego-death is coming to you.
Remember:
This is now the hour of death and rebirth;
Take advantage of this temporary death to obtain the perfect state -
Enlightenment.
Concentrate on the unity of all living beings.
Hold onto the Clear Light.
Use it to attain understanding and love..."

I began to get very clear messages from within my own heart why I chose the life I did. There might be some people who are reading this who might be thinking, "Oh, you were making it all up..." And that is exactly the point! We are making up life as we go along. Most of us do not understand, however, that all of life is simply a projection of what we are in consciousness.

"If you cannot maintain the bliss of illumination and if you are slipping back into contact with the external world,
Remember:
The hallucinations which you may now experience,
The visions and insights,
Will teach you much about yourself and the world.
The veil of routine perception will be torn from you eyes.
Remember the unity of all living things.
Remember the bliss of the Clear Light.
Let it guide you through the visions of this experience.
Let it guide you through your new life to come.
If you feel confused; call upon the memory of your friends and the power of the person whom you most admire..."

I began to feel wave after wave of Love, of Life, of Light...the three symbols that I, to this day, refer to the One Guiding Spirit I call God as. I began to cry as she held my hand - or what I thought of as my hand - and slowly but surely I merged with her and she merged with me and we were One. We always were. But just as I was One with her, I was One with the All. In fact, I never left the One that created me out of Itself.

"O John,
Try to reach and keep the experience of the Clear Light.
Remember:
The light is the life energy.
The endless flame of life.
An ever-changing surging turmoil of color may engulf your vision.
This is the ceaseless transformation of energy.
The life process.
Do not fear it.
Surrender to it.
Join it.
It is part of you.
You are part of it.
Remember also:
Beyond the restless flowing electricity of life is the ultimate reality -
The Void.
Your own awareness, not formed into anything possessing form or color, is naturally void.
The Final Reality.
The All Good.
The All Peaceful.
The Light.
The Radiance.
The movement is the fire of life from which we all come.
Join it.
It is part of you.
Beyond the light of life is the peaceful silence of the void.
The quiet bliss beyond all transformations.
The Buddha smile.
The Void is not nothingness.
The Void is beginning and end itself.
Unobstructed; shining, thrilling, blissful.
Diamond consciousness.
The All-Good Buddha.
Your own consciousness, not formed into anything,
No thought, no vision, no color, is void.
The intellect shining and blissful and silent -
This is the state of perfect enlightenment.
Your own consciousness, shining, void and inseparable from the great body of radiance, has no birth, nor death.
It is the immutable light which the Tibetans call Buddha Amitabha,
The awareness of the formless beginning.
Knowing this is enough.
Recognize the voidness of your own consciousness to be Buddhahood.
Keep this recognition and you will maintain the state of the divine mind of the Buddha."

All of my yesterdays and all of tomorrows are simply extensions of my today...of what I am being in this instant. People think that enlightenment or reaching a Christlike state takes years and years to reach. But even the Bible refers to it as something happening instaneously...

"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."
Corinthians 15:56

Many years have since passed since my one and only LSD experience. Sometimes my ego wants to go back and have "another one". Like the insatiable kid who could've satisfied his craving with just one piece of chocolate, but got sick after eating the whole box. Nope, all I need was confirmation, validation, appreciation for this Spiritual Path I was already on. It was truly a gift from my Self to my self.

I still live in Southern California. I became a Spiritual Counselor, met my wife, and every day is a beautiful new experience. Sometimes I'm not in awe and appreciation. Sometimes I'm really "stuck" in this world of form but as soon as I close my eyes and breathe in and out and just sloooooow dooooown...I can deeply realize with real eyes see that what I am looking for is always what I am looking with.

Read this book with an open mind and an expanded heart. Feel the Presence of Light all around you...all within you.

I am not advicating psychedelics in any way, shape, or form. I firmly believe you can "get" to another place in consciousness if you "let" yourself let go and just jump in. You are not your body. You never have been. You are the Light, the Life, and the Love of Something I call God, but it is from this Invisible Presence that all life stands forth out of.

Peace & Blessings,
john, 'the Light Coach'

Excellent, informative, and utterly lacking in a few places 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is an excellent, informative tome on current medications.
That being said, the book utterly lacks any information on the differences in responses to these drugs along ethnic diversity lines, or gender differences, or interactions with commonly used herbs or supplements.
The topic of diversity and supplement usage is extremely relevant in today's world and knowledge of the these subjects will only increase our clients' comfort.

Editorial Review:

Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is intended as a primer text for this field, and can be read cover to cover by anyone from the novice to the expert. Expanded and fully revised, this third edition enlists advances in neurobiology and recent clinical developments to explain with renewed clarity the concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. Features of this edition are clinical advances in antipsychotic and antidepressant therapy. It includes new coverage of sleep disorders, chronic pain, and disorders of impulse control. This remains the essential text for students, scientists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.

This book is comprehensive for pediatric clinicians. Format is easy to use and very through information.

reliable source for the pediatrician 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great source to have access to (especially if you're looking up pediatric drugs at home and don't have access to UptoDate or Micromedex). It is a thorough reference. The major down-side is that it lacks an index for generic/trade names. Maybe it's there and I still haven't found it, but this is a problem when one is trying to quick reference a drug. Nevertheless, I haven't found a superior drug reference in a readily available book in pediatrics (online, I'd say Micromedex is even more complete, but in a book, this is the best). Also, for neonatal dosing, I would prefer Neofax.

Editorial Review:

The pediatric population is a dynamic group, with major changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics taking place throughout infancy and childhood. Because of these vital changes, the need for the evaluation and establishment of medication dosing regimens in children of different ages is great. The Pediatric Dosage Handbook, 15th Edition, continues to be the trusted information resource for medical professionals managing pediatric patients.

I am a home health nurse therefore this pocket drug guide is perfect. I do not have room to carry a full sized book in my bag not to mention the added weight.
It is easy to read and understand. The look up is so easy!
This is fantastic! I reccomend it to any nurse!

Good content but small font! 4 out of 5 stars.

I really found this pocket drug guide helpful. I'm a nursing student and I'm constantly looking up drugs that my patients are on. The only problem I have with the format is that the words are SO small! I'm no senior citizen and I can barely see those itty bitty words on the page! I've also found a lot of drugs missing from the pages--but what can I expect! Its a minaturized version! I'd reccomend this for students doing clinical...but don't make it your bible. You'll need another drug book if you want to get to know these drugs and their interactions for real.

Editorial Review:

Specifically geared towards patient-care, this instant-access pocket guide provides registered nurses with essential, up-to-the-minute information on the selection and administration of 1,000 commonly used medications. This resource is revised annually to reflect approval of new drugs, changes in usage of current drugs, and withdrawal of older ones. The 2009 edition includes 30 additional herbal supplements. Organized alphabetically by drug name.

Editorial Review:

Always a student favorite, Pharmacology for Nursing Care offers a clear approach explaining drug prototypes and how they work. It provides the background needed to understand related drugs currently on the market, as well as drugs yet to be released. In simplifying a complex subject, this text focuses on the essentials of pharmacology. Large print is used to show "need-to-know" information, and small print is used for "nice to know" material. At the end of each chapter, a summary of major nursing implications helps in applying the material to real-world situations. This edition includes a new companion CD-ROM featuring NCLEX® examination-style review questions, a variety of electronic calculators, and animations depicting drug mechanisms and effects.

  • Uses a prototype drug approach that places a strong emphasis on understanding over memorization - equipping students with the knowledge to learn not only about related drugs currently on the market, but also about those drugs that will be released once the student begins practice.
  • Summaries of Major Nursing Implications at the end of each chapter provide an in-depth look at assessment, implementation, and ongoing evaluations.
  • Utilizes large print for essential information and small print for "nice-to-know" information to help both faculty and students focus their limited classroom and study time on understanding the essentials.
  • Concise drug summary tables present detailed information on individual drugs, including class, generic and trade names, dosages, routes, and indications.
  • Key Points at the end of each chapter summarize content in a bulleted format to help students review important concepts.
  • Prototype drug discussions employ a clear and consistent format with separate headings for Mechanism of Action; Pharmacologic Effects; Pharmacokinetics; Therapeutic Uses; Adverse Effects; Drug Interactions; and Preparations, Dosage, and Administration.
  • An attractive full-color design adds visual interest, highlights key information, and facilitates student learning.

  • Drugs for Multiple Sclerosis and Drugs for Hemophilia chapters.
  • Drugs for Erectile Dysfunction and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia chapter covers newsworthy drugs such as Viagra and Levitra.
  • Special Interest Topics boxes on current issues in pharmacology, such as Medication-Overuse Headache: Too Much of a Good Thing and Face Time with Botox.
  • Adult Immunization appendix summarizes the latest information on immunizations.
  • Numerous new illustrations show drug mechanisms and effects, and depict topics such as histologic changes in Alzheimer's disease and the movement of drugs following GI absorption.

NOT a 'Study on You Own' Review 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book would probably be a good review IF and only IF you have a hard text that goes along with it or you have attended a school for pharm tech for 2 yrs. This is a workbook ONLY and it doesn't explain the answers and some of the questions involve things that is I have never heard of and there was no way to figure it out without another source to go to. So IF you buy this book, make sure that you have the text book that goes along with it (and I don't know what that is) because if you are studying pharm tech on your own and you haven't gone to school for this, you will be disappointed because it is not a teaching book for review.

Good book, but not on it's own... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've been using The Pharmacy Technician (2nd edition) and this workbook for self-study over the past 2.5 months. I read the text book cover to cover and I've been casually quizzing myself with this book.

I agree with another one of the reviewers: Unless you have a textbook to go along with this book, it can be hard to use. I would HIGHLY recommend getting BOTH!! The workbook does not really explain any of the answers, which can make it hard to grasp a concept if you don't have something more detailed to refer to. Sometimes, I'll miss a question in the workbook and REALLY have to dig for it in the text book. It would be nice if, in the answer key, they could either include explanations or at least tell you where to look.

The layout of the book is simple & helpful. Each chapter is basically a detailed vocabulary list. At the end of each chapter, there are fill-in-the-blank questions, multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions to check understanding. The questions are challenging and will prepare you well, but again, GET THE TEXTBOOK WITH IT. Great book for reviewing, though. It also has a handy list in the back of the top 200 drugs that makes for easy index card making.

(If you're looking for a good math study book, APhA's Complete Math Review for the Pharmacy Technician is REALLY good! Really prepares you well for the math part. I took the practice test in the Workbook & Cert. Review and got EVERY SINGLE math question right.)

No matter which books you get, you need to put in the time or none of them will help! If you haven't taken any courses, I'd recommend at LEAST 2 months (2-3 hrs/day) with the books I mentioned.

Editorial Review:

This workbook can be used by pharmacy technicians as a preparation for the National Examination given by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. This third edition contains a revised Practice Exam.
