Editorial Review:

We live in a toxic world. Environmental pollution and disease-causing germs assault us continually day after day. Our food is nutrient deficient and our water supply dangerously contaminated. People today are exposed to chemicals in far greater concentrations than were previous generations. Diseases that were rare or unheard of a century ago are now raging upon us like a plague. Millions are dying from diseases that were virtually unknown in the past. Experts tell us that by the time we reach middle age, each one of us will have already been affected by either cancer, cardiovascular disease, or some other serious degenerative condition. Conventional medicine has no sure cure. Drugs, surgery, and radiation treatments can be as dangerous and debilitating as the diseases they attempt to cure. This book outlines the steps you need to take to thoroughly detoxify and cleanse your body from these disease-causing agents. You will also learn how to reduce your toxic exposure and how to strengthen your immune system.

Editorial Review:

These days, prescription drugs are often considered a first course of treatment for psychological disorders. Like any other modern pharmaceuticals, psychopharmacological drugs are complex, powerful, and highly interactive with other chemical and natural medications. Mental health and medical professionals absolutely must have a thorough knowledge of how these medicines are used and how they work in the human body. People who take these drugs or love others who do will benefit greatly from having a thorough understanding of the application and function of psychologically effective prescription drugs. This book has proven its indispensability through three editions and remains, in this fourth major update, the single most respected and widely used book on the subject available.

Everyone who needs the most accurate and comprehensive information about psychopharmacological medicines must have this book on his or her shelf. It covers every significant medical aspect of the use of these drugs, including indications based on diagnosis, physiological functions, side effects, and criteria for evaluating client response and recommending further treatment or reevaluation. This revised and expanded edition includes a new chapter devoted to children and psychopharmaceuticals. Sections on bipolar disorder, major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder have been revised to include major developments in current research. Six new drugs have been fully reviewed and added to the book's charts and tables.

Fantastic Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book was a very good purchasing, because it gives me the main infomation about biomolecules, metabolism and biochemistry deseases. I don't want to be expert in biochemistry, I am studying medicine and I just want to be a doctor that has a good biochemistry knowledge with a clinical approach. This book gives me what I want...
Besides, the book makes be easier to learn biochemistry...

Good Clinical Correlations 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The whole point of going to medical school is to be able to solve problems and apply basic scientific principles in solving those problems. This edition gives specific and memorable clinical cases that help one to remember and apply these priniciples in clinical practice. It also comes with a CD that is a great bonus. I heartily recommend this book to help explain and use the basic medical biochemistry principles. It starts with a look at the metabolic and nutritional needs of the human body, relevent to anyone, and a great place to start, whereas many other books like, Lehninger, start out with chemical theory. This makes Marks much more relevent to the medical student and much more interesting. I recommend this book for your library and practical use. Use Lehninger to keep the door open, and read Marks to feed your brain.

Editorial Review:

A best-selling core textbook for medical students taking medical biochemistry, Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry links biochemical concepts to physiology and pathophysiology, using hypothetical patient vignettes to illustrate core concepts. Completely updated to include full-color art, expanded clinical notes, and bulleted summaries at the end of each chapter, the revised Third Edition helps medical students understand the importance of the patient and bridges the gap between biochemistry, physiology, and clinical care.

The best 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I had the pocket version and wanted to see if a larger version had more info or is just larger print. Don't get both as they are identical as far as I can tell. The larger one has a ring binding, so you can lay it flat and look at it. Also, for those over 40 the print is bigger. The larger one would fit in an oversize pocket, but mine are too stuffed with other stuff to fit the big version.

Sanford Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been using this guide as a reference for years, since I was in school. It's a great guide.

Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy 2008 4 out of 5 stars.

If you have only one reference for Antibiotic therapy this should be it.Although not always intuitive in it's layout, once you find what your looking for, it offers clear instruction and sensinable alternitives. A standard for all practices.

The medium size spiral edition is the one to get. 4 out of 5 stars.

After seeing the size of the text and tables of the pocket size version, the spiral bound book was definetly a better choice because it can be read without a magnifying glass and still fits into my lab coat.

Editorial Review:

The essential, accessible source for understanding how drugs work and their effects on body and behavior. Scientifically accurate and easy to read, this no-nonsense handbook gives the most balanced, objective information available on the most often used and abused drugs, from alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine to heroin, ecstasy, and special-K. It reports both in quick-reference summaries and in depth on how these drugs enter the body, how they manipulate the brain, their short-term and long-term effects, the kinds of "high" they produce, and the circumstances in which they can be deadly. Little information has previously been made accessible to the general public on the most current psychological and pharmacological research on drug use--and even less that is not distorted by anti-drug hysteria, leading many people, especially young people, to distrust any official pronouncements. But whether the reader is a student confronted with drugs for the first time, an accountant reaching for his fourth cup of coffee, or a health educator, this book will provide a clear understanding of how drugs work and the consequences of their use. Neither a "Just Say No" treatise nor a "How-to" manual, this book is based on the conviction that people make better decisions when well-informed than when in the dark.

some useful info 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There was some useful information mixed in with some of the author's "opinions".
A lot of the information was facts that I've heard before and/or already knew about. But, it's nice to have a reference on hand instead of relying on memory. I didn't actually find any "amazing cures" - just some options in treatment.
What works for some doesn't necessarily work for others - but you can
always try to help yourself.

Editorial Review:

As a pharmacist for almost two decades, Suzy Cohen knows that medication can often be invaluable. But she has also learned to "think outside the pill" and recommend natural options that are often just as good or better at promoting health without the risk of dangerous, drug-induced side effects. In this comprehensive, one-of-a-kind resource, she answers such questions as:

  • How can I stop my husband/wife from snoring?
  • Are vitamin pills worth it or worthless?
  • Are there alternatives to antidepressants?
  • What kind of surge protection is there for hot flashes?
  • How can I train my body to lose fat?

Great for review, bad for learning 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

While in school, I enjoyed the pictures and such. But found the book tough to learn from. Maybe I don't handle gigantic lists that well.
Now that I'm out practicing, I like the book alot as a quick reference/refresher.

Great pharm review book 5 out of 5 stars.

Great charts and they group the meds together by class. They give you a quick patho review too. This book really helps with memorization and it really is simple.

Great book for covering the basics! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book for those who are interested in the basics of pharmacology. Every chapter covers a different aspect of the body and the effects that pharmaceuticals have on it. Covering difficult concepts about the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, the book utilizes charts and "cute" animations to illustrate how certain drugs act on specific receptors. In a sense this book could be considered to be a version of Cliff's Notes for pharmacology students.

However, while the book is straightforward and correct about the actions of the categories of drugs (for example, beta blockers), there are several errors in the pharmaceutical charts regarding the specific actions and side effects of certain medcines. Please check with your professors or a more knowledgable authority concerning these errors.

Editorial Review:

Provides general principles of pharmacology. Includes tables to compare different agents within a given class of drugs. For use as a review for Boards, self-testing, or reference. Previous edition: c1997.
