Vindication for the creators of this book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I originally bought this book in 1990. I found it very scientific in it's process and only biased in the sense of attempting to dispell the drug hysteria that overwhelms oh so many people who cannot think for themselves. I was very proud of this book and all it offered, incuding making intellegent and educated decisions when I've chosen to ingest chemicals (drugs or otherwise), until the mid-90's research which seemed to negate almost all that Eisner offered. However, now (see New York times 3/10/04) it seems that "findings about mdma and its effect on the brain's seratonin levels" were inaccurate, published with an anti-drug agenda, and not accepted by many in this field of research. Seems like what I learned from this book so many years ago is as accurate as I initially thought and the writer and researchers are far ahead of the game in a much more non-biased sense than most of us. Not only have I learned a great deal of comprehensible scientific information on MDMA from this book, but also was able to realize how moronic the drug hysteria can be.

Editorial Review:

Thoroughly revised and updated for its Second Edition, this volume is a practical guide to the management of the myriad symptoms and quality-of-life issues that occur in patients with cancer--including newly diagnosed patients, patients undergoing treatment, cancer survivors, and patients whose disease is no longer curable. The interdisciplinary group of contributors includes leading experts in hospice care and palliative medicine, oncology, nursing, neurology, psychiatry, anesthesiology, and pharmacology. More than thirty chapters cover the symptoms and syndromes that can result from cancer or its treatment. Other chapters describe the variety of interventions available for alleviating these symptoms. Close attention is also given to hospice programs, terminal care, and ethical dilemmas in palliative and end-of-life care. This edition features new chapters on complementary and alternative medicine, nutritional support, bone pain, cross-cultural issues, palliative care in the ICU, physiatric approaches to pain, and outcomes assessments in palliative care.

Needs editing! 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this review book in order to prepare for my written boards in 2004. I found that there were numerous mistakes in the answer sections making this a very hard review manual to get through. I would not recommend this book if you are preparing for boards. I would get Chern's review manual and question and answer book for board review studying.

Good intro to picu 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Good intro to picu. There is probably a new version of this book coming out soon. I had this with me in the unit when i was on call. Brief enough chapters to maybe get through one on call. Not bad. I would check out [...] first. Supplemental knowledge. If you're going into PICU, maybe you could buy the new version.

Editorial Review:

-- Are patients aware of the fact that pharmacological therapies stress the brain in ways which may prevent or postpone symptomatic and functional recovery ? ==================================================== Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent is a critical appraisal of the medications which an estimated 20% of Americans consume on a regular (and sometimes involuntary) basis. It is the philosophically, epidemiologically, and scientifically supported revelation of how and why psychiatry's drug therapies have contributed to a standard of care which frequently does more to harm than to cure. Extensively researched and documented, the book addresses: -- the process by which psychiatric drugs reach the market -- the history and philosophy of Evidence Based Medicine -- the common flaws in research methodologies which negate the validity of the psychiatric RCT (Randomized Controlled Trial) -- the problem of allostatic load (how drugs stress the body) -- the history, long term effects, and utility of the drugs used to suppress symptoms of depression, psychosis, inattention and hyperactivity -- the effectiveness of alternatives to medication Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent exposes the current crisis in medical ethics and epistemology, and attempts to restore to psychiatry an authentically informed consent to care.

A practical encouraging guide 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is simple and short, and is a wonderful way to encourage someone on the terrible journey that is called rsd, crps,or rnd. Written by a young woman who has "been there" and found her way through, it also gives practical guidance from Elizabeth's mother and sister to parents and siblings of young people with rsd.

Editorial Review:

"Power Through Pain is a moving, inspiring memoir of Elizabeth Elster and her family's three and a half year struggle to find a solution to Elizabeth's intense daily pain. Eventually, after seeing twenty physicians, ingesting countless medications, and enduring many invasive medical procedures, the Elster family's search ends in success. Too often, individuals in chronic pain become isolated and embittered. This is a wonderful account of an individual's courage, determination and hope that will help other families struggling with rare chronic illnesses weave a path through a fragmented medical system that treats symptoms yet rarely heals." James W. Broatch, MSW, Executive Director, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association

A Great Pain Management Text 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Griggsby Wright, MD says:

This book has fantastic illustrations relating to anatomical structures, creating a 3-dementional appreciation for technical approaches and interventions. However, the genre of this book is limitless by actually getting down to the molecular aspects of theory and practice.

This book boasts an extensive compilation frameworked within a superior format.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive, authoritative text presents the scientific foundations and clinical practice of neural blockade in both regional anesthesia and the management of pain. The descriptions and illustrations of pain mechanisms are considered classic examples. The Fourth Edition has been refined for clarity and flows logically from principles and pharmacology, to techniques for each anatomic region, to applications. This edition has two new co-editors and several new chapters on topics including neurologic complications, neural blockade for surgery, treatment of pain in older people, and complications in pain medicine. A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text and an image bank.

Groundworks gives accounts of the actual processes of working with individuals in six major schools of Somatics by either the creator of the method itself or a leading teacher of the method. The creators are Robert Hall of Lomi School, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen of Body-Mind Centering, and Emilie Conrad Da'oud of Continuum. Leading teachers of methods include Michael Salveson on Rolfing, Elizabeth Beringer on Feldenkrais work, and Darcy Elman on F. M. Alexander Technique. Each therapist describes how he or she approaches and diagnoses a patient's problem, how he or she determines what and where to work, and the progress of a session. Each therapist shows the complexity of working with somatic processes and the resulting reward for client and therapist both.
