Editorial Review:

Though pain affects millions of people daily, it is one of the most mysterious and hard-to-treat conditions. Pain can have many causes, is experienced subjectively in varieties of different ways, and often defies the most advanced treatments available to modern medicine. Yet physicians such as Daniel J. Benor, as well as hundreds of other doctors and complementary therapists worldwide, are developing simple and safe ways to treat pain naturally. They have discovered that addressing underlying emotional traumas often leads to the rapid and permanent alleviation of pain. When emotional pain is cleared, physical pain often dissipates too.

WHEE is one in a new group of therapies called Energy Psychology. WHEE changes a person's bio-electromagnetic energy system and consciousness - and facilitates the healing of physical problems. In the same way that changing the position of two magnets makes the iron filings between them shift, the bio-energy field changes produced by WHEE often result in rapid and painless healing on all levels of a person's being.

CranioSacral Therapy is great! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is very difficult to read, but it is full of amazing information. I read it to prepare for a 4-day workshop on CranioSacral Therapy from The Upledger Institute. I had to read the book before the class, and again after the class. It made much more sense the second time.

I was a little skeptical at first, but I decided to give the therapy a try. I'm very glad I did, too. My son had been diagnosed with PDD (autism) and bipolar disorder before I took the class. After a couple of years of using CranioSacral Therapy (and a few other things), he now has ADD. He no longer takes the bipolar medication, and people who know him would never suspect PDD.

It has been A LOT of work, but it's worth every minute of it!

Editorial Review:

Craniosacral Therapy is the most practical, comprehensive textbook in this rapidly growing field of therapy involving the cranial bones, meningeal membranes, cerebrospinal fluids, and whole-body connective tissues. Craniosacral Therapy defines the physiology and anatomy of the craniosacral system, its function in health, and relationship to disease processes. It provides practical instruction in developing and extending palpatory skills which will greatly benefit all forms of manipulation, as well as basic physical diagnosis.

Two hundred drawings and photographs illustrate the mechanisms underlying the craniosacral system, and vividly demonstrate how to perform craniosacral techniques in the clinic.

Editorial Review:

An illustrated practical guide to the use and technique of injecting joints for the relief of musculoskeletal pain and inflammation. The bulk of the book deals with the technique of injection joint by joint. The page of illustrations illustrating the procedure. For each joint there is a 2-color line drawing of the anatomy of the joint and a photograph (highlighted using a second color) showing the surface anatomy position for injection.

Very Interesting - I loved it! 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

First, if you have read Dr. Drew's book "Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Back Together" then I would recommend this book if you are further interested addiction.

This book definitely has a different tone, as some of the other reviews complain, but don't let that turn you away! It may not be a compassionate look into a doctor's world of addiction treatment, but it's not meant to be. This book is a nice introduction to addiction, how it happens, how treatment works, and how it is genetic. It's meant more as a reference for people who struggle with addiction through a family member, friend, etc and not as something to be necessarily entertaining.

The reason I rated this book a four is because of some of the terminology thrown around in it. If not familiar with the brain structure and some basic psychology, this book may have some people doing a little more research for a better understanding. Though, if you want to learn about addiction and many of the concepts emerging today, this is a great book and has many great references included in it.

Another note, this is not a Dr. Drew book entirely. This book is simply composed of six different writers (Drew included) who discuss many different aspects of addiction.

Editorial Review:

Americans, it seems, have a history of self-medicating for pain. The high profile and increasingly widespread cases of prescription pain medication abuse that we're seeing today serve as the latest chapter in America's long-standing love/hate relationship with painkilling drugs. In this fascinating, informative, and timely book, Dr. Drew Pinsky and other leading experts in the fields of addiction and recovery discuss why Americans are using drugs such as OxyContin and Vicodin, how American's used and abused other painkillers in the past, what makes some people vulnerable to addiction, and how to get help for yourself or a family member in trouble with drugs.

Editorial Review:

Well over ten million Americans are prescribed a psychiatric medication annually, for symptoms as varied as headache and insomnia to depression and various psychiatric disorders. Unbelievably, many of these drugs have not been formally tested to treat the problems for which they have been prescribed. Scientifically documenting the need for an end to this vicious cycle of inadequate approval, mis-medication, and irresponsible inattention to adverse side effects, Breggin and Cohen advocate compassionate and non-toxic therapies, and offer readers a roadmap for sensible, safe withdrawal from psychiatric drugs.Whether the drug is a sleeping pill, tranquilizer, stimulant, antidepressant, mood stabilizer, or antipsychotic, Your Drug May Be Your Problem reveals its documented withdrawal symptoms, demonstrating what many doctors don’t know, understand, or consider: withdrawal symptoms often mimic the symptoms for which a person has been medicated in the first place, a fact that frequently prompts doctors to mistakenly re-medicate their patients at even higher doses. Armed with this essential background information, readers will then be able to choose for themselves when and how to withdraw from psychiatric drugs. Groundbreaking and empowering, Your Drug May Be Your Problem offers readers what they have long sought—a medically and psychologically sound program for freeing themselves from psychiatric drugs, emphasizing throughout the importance for patients to keep control over the withdrawal process.

I've used my little handbook for a number of years now and recently purchased copies for my case managers. They have reported they refer to the handbook often and it is kept with them at all times while they are in the field. It is well worth the money.

Symptom Management Algorithms: A Handbook for Pallieative Care 1 out of 5 stars.

Terrible, terrible, terrible!!! I never received this book. I am a hospice nurse whose patients depend upon me for the comfort that this book guides me to give them, but what kind of comfort can I give if I do not have this book in hand as a reference. Many, many weeks, if not months ago I ordered this book, but I have yet to receive it.
I will not accept the excuses that it was not available, because I have seen it advertised in my nursing journals from lots of book outlets. To keep me as the always-true-blue-absolutely-loyal-customer whose book purchasing monoply you have enjoyed for countless eons, and to keep me from purchasing this book, and taking my business to other outlets, I strongly suggest that you folks get off your collective duffs and ship this book immediately.
Perhaps I have not received this volume because I used your "orders >$25.00 get free shipping" option, and your free shipping is by way of BF Egypt, using slow-mo salamanders as carriers?
Well, you'd better whip up those pathetic little salamandor buggers into supersonic action and get that book to me ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you fail to deliver this book ASAP, I will curse you with the ultimate of all curses: May the flees of one-thousand camels invade your armpits, plus all your most sensitive body parts/orifices below.
You have exactly one week from today, 8 March 97, to respond, or get ready to scratch!

A helpful book for both patients and professionals 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 48 people found this review helpful.

"You'll just have to learn to live with it." That's what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to "live with it?" Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn's book begins. Dr. Thorn's book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is not a comprehensive chronic pain workbook, nor was it intended to be. It does not cover such issues as medications for pain, nor does it cover breathing techniques for pain or insomnia control. Rather, it takes one critically important aspect of pain disorders, how patients come to think about their pain, and deals with the therapeutic process more thoroughly than any other book currently available.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain book is a monumental work on the topic of how pain and suffering are influenced, for better or for worse, by a patient's belief system. Beyond this, this book does an extraordinary job of taking current scientific theory and research about the nature of pain, and distilling from that concrete advice for both clinicians and their patients. This book leaves the reader with the awareness that Dr. Thorn is a master at simplifying complex ideas, and explaining them in a way that even a discouraged patient can understand and benefit from.

Unlike some books, which are scientifically sound but which offer little that is clinically usable, Dr. Thorn's book is eminently practical. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain walks the reader through the types of the beliefs that influence pain, how to assess them, therapeutic strategies, and homework assignment for the patients. This book even takes the additional step of identifying aspects of these assignments that patients are likely to have difficulty with, and strategies for helping patients overcome these difficulties.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is organized with sections on theoretical matters, assessment devices with their scoring keys, and therapeutic strategies with actual homework forms. Additionally, there are also sample dialogs illustrating how to present this information, and how the patient might respond.

Dr. Thorn's approach is at the same time sympathetic to the plight of patients with pain, while still offering hope. While never judgmental, she still challenges patients to identify ineffective coping strategies, and to learn better ones. Most health psychologists will have a chronic pain workbook on their shelf. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is the next step beyond such a workbook, and will be an indispensable addition to even a senior pain professional's library.

Although this book is written as a guide for clinicians who treat pain, this book can also be a useful self-help guide for a motivated patient with pain.

Editorial Review:

Grounded in state-of-the-art theory and research, this hands-on volume provides a complete cognitive-behavioral treatment program for clients suffering from chronic pain. Ten clearly organized modules for use with groups or individuals offer well-tested strategies for engaging clients, challenging distorted thoughts and beliefs about pain, and helping to build needed skills for coping and adaptation. Also featured are a detailed theoretical and empirical rationale, along with guidelines for setting up treatment groups and conducting effective assessments. Presented in a large-size format for ease of photocopying and use, the book contains everything needed to implement the program, including numerous case examples and troubleshooting tips and over 40 reproducible session outlines, client handouts, and assessment tools.
