Editorial Review:

Too often, finance courses stop short of making a connection between textbook finance and the problems of real-world business. Financial Modeling bridges this gap between theory and practice by providing a nuts-and-bolts guide to solving common financial models with spreadsheets. Simon Benninga takes the reader step by step through each model, showing how it can be solved using Microsoft Excel.

The long-awaited third edition of this standard text maintains the "cookbook" features and Excel dependence that have made the first and second editions so popular. It also offers significant new material, with new chapters covering such topics as bank valuation, the Black-Litterman approach to portfolio optimization, Monte Carlo methods and their applications to option pricing, and using array functions and formulas. Other chapters, including those on basic financial calculations, portfolio models, calculating the variance-covariance matrix, and generating random numbers, have been revised, with many offering substantially new and improved material. Other areas covered include financial statement modeling, leasing, standard portfolio problems, value at risk (VaR), real options, duration and immunization, and term structure modeling. Technical chapters treat such topics as data tables, matrices, the Gauss-Seidel method, and tips for using Excel. The last section of the text covers the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) techniques needed for the book. The accompanying CD contains Excel worksheets and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.

Praise for the previous editions:

"Benninga has a clear writing style and uses numerous illustrations, which make this book one of the best texts on using Excel for finance that I've seen."
Ed McCarthy, Ticker Magazine

"The author describes this as a 'cookbook' and that is a good analogy.... Its breadth is extensive, covering simple present valuing and cost of capital ... to the likes of real options and early exercise of American-style options.... A worthwhile acquisition."
Paul Dentskevitch, Risk Magazine

"Financial Modeling is highly-recommended to readers who are interested in an introduction to basic, traditional approaches to financial modeling and analysis, as well as to those who want to learn more about applying spreadsheet software to financial analysis."
Edward Weiss, Journal of Computational Intelligence in Finance

"Financial Modeling belongs on the desk of every finance professional. Its no-nonsense, hands-on approach makes it an indispensable tool."
Hal R. Varian, Dean, School of Information Management and Systems, University of California, Berkeley

"This is applied finance theory for the professional at its best. As a student, I and countless others learnt the intricacies of Lotus and financial theory from Professor Benninga's first book—Numerical Techniques in Finance. Now, as a professional, I do not have to 're-invent the wheel' in Excel. An invaluable guide. A must for all financial analysts."
Vikas Nath, Global Strategist, Emerging Equity Markets, Union Bank of Switzerland, London

lost in transition 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

the book is compeltely unstructured. the author jumps from one theme to another. finally we get this crazy story about the guy who sees tommorow's numbers in today's WSJ and get a brief on Keins biography. come on guys! if you dont know what to write in a book, publish your articles in journals. he's a smart guy(the author), but a lousy writer. Maybe he's got a lousy publisher, somone shoul've helped him structure it much better.

Elegantly-written, in-your face report on hedge funds 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Hedgehoggers come in different sizes and personalities, and their results swing widely from high levels of success to abject failure. Hedge-fund investing is only for rich people and institutions; however, these funds play an important role in the stock market and the economy. Author Barton Biggs is a cultured, high-level money manager and global strategist. After 30 years with Morgan Stanley (which took public exception to parts of this book), he raised substantial capital through his wealthy family and investors, and entered the hedgehogging jungle. He describes the field both coldly and romantically. He is an effective raconteur, especially when he details war stories about Wall Street's unethical, double-crossing maneuvers, and strange but wealthy characters. getAbstract recommends this book for its smooth, dramatic writing about hedge funds, their context and the players who run them.

Editorial Review:

Rare is the opportunity to chat with a legendary financial figure and hear the unvarnished truth about what really goes on behind the scenes. Hedgehogging represents just such an opportunity, allowing you to step inside the world of Wall Street with Barton Biggs as he discusses investing in general, hedge funds in particular, and how he has learned to find and profit from the best moneymaking opportunities in an eat-what-you-kill, cutthroat investment world.

It was OK... 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Being in the financial services I am always looking for new and exciting books in my field...sadly, this is not one of them. The book was dry and made for a long read.

The upside is that the authors seem to know what they are talking about and are able to explain the ideas behind a variety of different asset protection strategies.

The authors also explain the benefits and drawbacks of each asset protection strategy, though they do not go into very much detail on some of their ideas.

One of the reasons is probably because at the end of the book, they provide their website as a reference. I don't have a problem with that, but it would have been nice if they had been able to make the information more interesting so that you didn't feel like you had to go to their website to "get the good stuff".

Editorial Review:

Strategies that are effective and legal for putting one’s assets safely out of reach

In today’s increasingly litigious world, the shielding of assets has become a prominent issue for financial planners, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals. Asset Protection details methods that are both legally and morally legitimate for protecting one’s assets from creditors, lawsuits, and scams.

Bringing economic common sense and legitimacy to an area that is drowning in gimmickry, two of today’s top lawyers examine the fundamental issues in this growing area, avoiding dense legalese to make the book accessible to anyone. Asset Protection covers everything readers want to know about:

  • Establishing an effective asset protection program
  • Today’s most popular, established strategies
  • Newer strategies that are still being resolved by the courts

Critique Highlights 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Strategic planning is a subject I know well having been a practitioner in a Fortune 500 company and a consultant for both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes and many different types for about 45 years and having written two books on the subject - one specific to nonprofits. My reason for buying this book along with two other books ("Applied Strategic Planning" Goodstein, Nolan, and Pfeiffer, and "Strategic Planning for Not-for-Profit Organizations" Haworth Press) was to find out if I should be aware of some important new techniques/approaches that had been developed. I did not find any.

I do not have time to provide a complete critique - just the highlights. This book is too long and involved for a reader who simply wants to find out how to write a strategic plan quickly and efficiently without wasting a lot of time. It inadequately provides the methodology for identifying key issues and tying in goals with strategies. Particularly missing is information on key governance areas, such as, job descriptions of executive directors, development directors, standing committees of boards, and important features of bylaws.

Editorial Review:

Practical, easy-to-follow planning strategies geared to the special requirements of the nonprofit

This very accessible resource from a team of experts in the nonprofit sector adapts basic business concepts to the unique structure and goals of nonprofit organizations. Breaking the planning process into six steps, the book covers it all--from getting ready and articulating the mission to monitoring and adjusting the finished plan.

* Sample worksheets, checklists, and tables are included in the book--and on a 3-1/2" IBM-compatible disk

JUDE KAYE and MIKE ALLISON (both of San Francisco, California) are executives with The Support Centers for Nonprofit Management.

Editorial Review:

"An excellent and comprehensive source of information on hedge funds! From a quantitative view Lhabitant has done it once again by meticulously looking at the important topics in the hedge fund industry. This book has a tremendous wealth of information and is a valuable addition to the hedge fund literature. In addition, it will benefit institutional investors, high net worth individuals, academics and anyone interested in learning more about this fascinating and often mysterious world of privately managed money. Written by one of the most respected practitioners and academics in the area of hedge funds." -Greg N. Gregoriou, Professor of finance and research coordinator in the School of Business and Economics at Plattsburgh State University of New York.

"This is a landmark book on quantitative approaches to hedge funds. All those with a stake in building hedge fund portfolios will highly profit from this exhaustive guide. A must read for all those involved in hedge fund investing." -Pascal Botteron, Ph.D., Head of Hedge Fund Product Development, Pictet Asset Management

"François-Serge Lhabitant's second book will prove to be a bestseller too - just like Hedge Funds: Myths and Limits. He actually manages to make quantitative analysis 'approachable'- even for those less gifted with numbers. This book, like its predecessor, includes an unprecedented mix of common sense and sophisticated technique. A fantastic guide to the 'nuts and bolts' of hedge fund analysis and a 'must' for every serious investor." -Barbara Rupf Bee, Head of Alternative Fund Investment Group, HSBC Private Bank, Switzerland

"An excellent book, providing deep insights into the complex quantitative analysis of hedge funds in the most lucid and intuitive manner. A must-have supplement to Lhabitant's first book dealing with the mystical and fascinating world of hedge funds. Highly recommended!" -Vikas Agarwal, Assistant Professor of Finance, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University

"Lhabitant has done it again! Whereas most books on hedge funds are nothing more than glorified marketing brochures, Lhabitant's new book tells it how it is in reality. Accessible and understandable but at the same time thorough and critical." -Harry M. Kat, Ph.D., Professor of Risk Management and Director Alternative Investment Research Centre, Cass Business School, City University

"Lhabitant's latest work on hedge funds yet again delivers on some ambitious promises. Successfully bridging theory and practice in a highly accessible manner, those searching for a thorough yet unintimidating introduction to the quantitative methods of hedge fund analysis will not be disappointed." -Christopher L. Culp, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor of Finance, Graduate School of Business, The University of Chicago and Principal, Chicago Partners LLC
