Editorial Review:

Muhammad Yunus is that rare thing: a bona fide visionary. His dream is the total eradication of poverty from the world. In 1983, against the advice of banking and government officials, Yunus established Grameen, a bank devoted to providing the poorest of Bangladesh with minuscule loans. Grameen Bank, based on the belief that credit is a basic human right, not the privilege of a fortunate few, now provides over 2.5 billion dollars of micro-loans to more than two million families in rural Bangladesh. Ninety-four percent of Yunus's clients are women, and repayment rates are near 100 percent. Around the world, micro-lending programs inspired by Grameen are blossoming, with more than three hundred programs established in the United States alone.

Banker to the Poor is Muhammad Yunus's memoir of how he decided to change his life in order to help the world's poor. In it he traces the intellectual and spiritual journey that led him to fundamentally rethink the economic relationship between rich and poor, and the challenges he and his colleagues faced in founding Grameen. He also provides wise, hopeful guidance for anyone who would like to join him in "putting homelessness and destitution in a museum so that one day our children will visit it and ask how we could have allowed such a terrible thing to go on for so long." The definitive history of micro-credit direct from the man that conceived of it, Banker to the Poor is necessary and inspirational reading for anyone interested in economics, public policy, philanthropy, social history, and business.

Muhammad Yunus was born in Bangladesh and earned his Ph.D. in economics in the United States at Vanderbilt University, where he was deeply influenced by the civil rights movement. He still lives in Bangladesh, and travels widely around the world on behalf of Grameen Bank and the concept of micro-credit.

Editorial Review:

Personal finance author and lecturer Robert T. Kiyosaki developed his unique economic perspective from two very different influences - two fathers. One father (Robert's real father) was a highly educated man but fiscally poor. The other was the father of Robert's best friend - that dad was a college drop-out who became a self-made multi-millionaire. In this follow-up to the bestselling "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", he reveals the secret of how the wealthiest people become wealthier by presenting some simple investing secrets and explaining how anyone can enjoy cash benefits merely by knowing where and how best to invest their money. The author's nuts-and-bolts approach to personal finance and understanding the real earning power of money has gained him a huge following, particularly as he knows all he describes from first-hand experience. Once so cash poor that he and his wife were forced to sleep in their car, today the Kiyosakis are multi-millionaires and highly sophisticated and experienced investment experts.

Economics of Failure 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 11 people found this review helpful.

John Maynard Keynes is the collectivist's savior. Finally, the welfare statist thinks, someone who actually makes my ideas sound good to economists. Unfortunately, Keynes's theory is nothing new. It should be incredibly obvious to any non-professional that if a large entity (government) decides to spend a lot of money over a short period of time, then in the short term there will be very pleasurable effects. In the long term, however, a large sum of money spent by the government will have very harmful effects, distorting the price system and creating inflation, whereas a large sum of money spent by a private entity will have a sustained benefit on the economy.

Editorial Review:

In 1936 Keynes published the most provocative book written by any economist of his generation. Arguments about the book continued until his death in 1946 and still continue today. This new edition, published 70 years after the original, features a new introduction by Paul Krugman which discusses the significance and continued relevance of The General Theory.

Inspiration for daytraders 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I generally only read textbooks about trading. Statistics, technical analysis, calculus etc. However, this very entertaining collection of interviews may be my favorite and most informative read. The stories give re-assurance that an individual can succeed through their own studies, analysis and effort. If you read carefully between the lines, you can figure out how the best in the business are operating and how they are formulating their strategies.

Editorial Review:

How do the world’s top traders make millions of dollars in the markets – sometimes in a matter of only weeks or even days? That’s precisely the question Jack Schwager was trying to answer when he interviewed 17 superstar money-makers including Richard Dennis, Paul Tudor Jones, Ed Seykota, Marty Schwartz, Tom Baldwin and others. After reading this best-selling book, you’ll know what ingredients enable these top traders to consistently work their financial magic in the markets while so many others walk away losers. One of the top-selling trading books of all-time!

Vague and lacking. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was my first introduction to Value Investing and I was intrigued by the clarity of Buffett's reasoning as expressed through the quotes in this book. However (!) now that I have digged deeper in the world of Value Investing, and have since revisited this book, I see that it is actually little more than a vague overview.

My first problem with this book is that it doesn't tell you how to practice what it preaches. It doesn't tell you where to find the information you need, for instance what parts of the annual reports you should read, and how to interpret them. In a sense, the book assumes you already know what you're doing - but why then pick up this book?!

Second, a most important aspect of Value Investing is that of valuation, naturally. That is, how much is a business really worth? Hagstrom quickly slings out a few calculations but does not properly explain the reasoning behind them. I have been trying to find good books on valuation but without luck so far. I would instead recommend the reader to do an internet search on this subject or a Wikipedia lookup for Discounted Cash Flow.

I debated with myself whether to give this book fewer stars than the three I gave it. But there are some good points for further investigation, if you're already experienced in value investing. Just take this book with a grain of salt.

Editorial Review:

Warren Buffet, surely one of the greatest investors of this century, shares his important thinking with listeners and has openly demonstrated the sagacity and courage so vital to success. 2 cassettes.

Superficial 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I seldom buy financial books because most of them are simply print "scams". I bought this one because of the reviews and a recommendation by someone, and Mr Panzner's credentials. He certainly has the background to write a meaningful book on the subject. However, I was stunned at how extraordinarily superficial the book was, and thus felt compelled to write a review. The book takes some similar events in history and paints a potentially very scary future. And that future may come to pass, but you've got almost 200 pages of extrapolating those historical events into the future and very little else. Seems little more than an attempt to sensationalize and commercialize what "can" and possibly will happen. There is little digging into what precipated some of the events, and the "advice" offered is really pathetic. The fact that this got such high ratings is either a testimony to how many friends he has in the industry or how ill informed and poorly read our society is. The one thing for sure is that there was indeed a wealth transfer that occured here: my wallet to his. But other than that, there is absolutely no reason to purchase this book. Given his credentials, I would have thought he would have been mildly embarrassed to pen this. He could undoubtedly do better.

Editorial Review:

According to Michael Panzner, the US is less than two years away from "financial Armageddon."  When the stock market bubble burst in March 2000, the collapse that followed wiped out over two-thirds of the value of the technology-laden Nasdaq Index and decimated the hopes and dreams of millions of Americans.

Now, imagine not one, but four such disasters looming on the horizon.  Four key elements--Debt, Derivatives, Government Guarantees, and the Retirement system--are quickly unraveling, and because they are so intricately connected, there will be an unremitting domino effect.  With time running out, this is a disaster-in-the-making on which every American must be informed so they can protect themselves, their families, and their economic well-being before it's too late.

best almanac for investors 5 out of 5 stars.

i have been using this almanac for many many years and i also subscribed to their web services. Just one trade will be worth it.

I believe in probability when it comes to the stock market and one should try to line up everything you could to increase your probability of a successful trade or investment. Why not buy or sell with that in mind over and above the tools you use either foundamentals or technical or both.
