A Must Read for Elementary Teachers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Where has this book been all of my teaching career? This book is such an easy read and true to its words. I didn't really think that my students would respond to the ideas in this book. Not only did they respond, they soaked it up. Never before have I had all of my students quietly engaged in meaningful reading activities. I am sharing this with my faculty. Thank you sisters!!

The Daily Five 5 out of 5 stars.

The Daily Five is going to change my literacy block in my second grade classroom. I'm excited about starting a new year with fresh ideas and a structure that will allow me more one-on-one and small group time for conferencing and instruction with my students.

Inspiring and helpful 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the few education books that I really looked forward to reading and learning more about the philosophy. Even if your school has a set idea of how Language Arts/Reading periods should look, there are some fabulous theories and strategies that can be implemented!

User Friendly 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a great way to introduce literacy activities to a class. It helps the teacher and students become comfortable with reading and writing. It also helps the students work independently without teacher support. I highly recommend this book to all elementary school teachers.

Math Doesn't Suck 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Great book. This makes math seem much less intimidating to students AND their teachers.
I bought it to show to my grad students who are going to be teachers. One bought her own copy after borrowing my copy and another student promptly borrowed the returned book.

Great reference--serious home work help 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book when my daughter faced some serious lags in starting the school year--3 days into a new school and 6th grade, and she was out from an appendectomy. I knew we'd have to do some serious instruction at home to keep her up to speed. Because our math text book is so unfriendly, the teacher recommended another reference, but this popped up on the Amazon suggestions. The positive reviews grabbed my interest, and when the book came I found that I actually wanted to read it! It has come in very handy during teary episodes of "I don't know how to do this"--it covers all those topics we once learned, but forgot, and makes it very fast and easy to re-learn (for parents) and learn (for kids). It's fun, engaging, and very helpful. Thanks, Danika!

Making Children Thoughtful Readers Is So Important 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Teaching young children to think and especially think about what they read is so important. Too often children read words with no idea about what they are reading. As a teacher I constantly use children's literature to teach comprehension. Two of my favorites are:Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success and The Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tailwhich not only have fabulous messages but a great teaching guide. I recommend these very highly to my parents because of these guides. Start young teaching kids to understand what they read!

Teaching Reading Comprehension 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book for those interested in teaching first graders how to comprehend their reading. It is full of strategies and systems that can be adapted to all grade levels. Easy, quick read.

Teaching With Debbie 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In this book, Debbie Miller leads the reader through a year in her classroom. I use it daily in order to focus my thoughts as I teach in a reading workshop structure. Even though I teach third grade and Debbie wrote from the perspective of a first grade teacher, her common sense yet highly sensitive approach to teaching reading empowers me to lead my students through a year of discovery. With her thoughts and strategies running through my mind influencing my lesson planning, my students rediscover themselves as readers. This book is a valuable resource for anyone teaching reading in the early elementary grades.

Really good too! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book as well is a really good book. Debbie Diller is amazing and I recommend all of her books. They have so much good information and have really good pictures from classrooms that I have used to help me with setting up my spaces in my room. Definitely get if you are a teacher.

Great way to meet all needs! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just started to implement this in my classroom (1st grade) for this week with the start of school. The kids were excited to help set up the stations and they were on task when they went to them for the first time. I am excited to differentiate for each child and to see how the students benefit.

Love the Work Stations 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a first year teacher learning the ropes. I am finding the work stations very easy to implement and am enjoying the "freedom" to achieve reading level testing at week three of the school year and am looking forward to guided reading group time soon.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend Debbie's book to all K-2 teachers! I spent TONS of time making and preparing "centers" during my 1st year of teaching and my students struggled with them. I read Debbie's book and set up my work stations according to her models - not only is it my students' favorite time of the day, but it's mine too! I also spend very little time preparing for work stations as the book explains how to use tasks that are taught during your everyday lessons (this way they easily align with the curriculum)!

I LOVE this book and just can't say enough about it! It has a permanent place on my desk!

An Eye-Opening Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I will always be grateful that someone recommended Loren Pope's book to me when my daughter was a high school sophomore. The book made such an impact on me that I remember where I was when I was reading it. (A soccer tournament in Lancaster, CA.) The book opened up an entirely new world for me because I had previously assumed that universities were superior to any pint-sized alternatives. It had never occurred me, my husband or daughter to consider liberal arts colleges.

Pope made an eloquent--and to me -- persuasive argument that liberal arts colleges are a wonderful choice for many students. I definitely don't think you should treat the 40 schools profiled as the only ones worth considering, but I would urge you to use the book to gain an appreciation of what small schools can offer.

My daughter just finished her freshman year at one of the 40 schools that's located in Pennsylvania and she had a marvelous experience. She liked ALL of her professors, she returned home bilingual (she's a Spanish major) and she made lots of friends. She brought five of them back home to San Diego during spring break.

After touring liberal arts colleges, my daughter ultimately didn't even want to apply to any University of California campuses. Liberal arts colleges, however, aren't cheap, which is why I set out to discover how we could afford a private school on a state school budget. Those efforts led me to write my own book, which was just released called The College Solution: A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price.

I think my book is a valuable supplement to Pope's book because it includes concrete advice on how you can slash the cost of private schools with high sticker prices. As I learned through my research as a financial journalist, the prices are meaningless if you know where to look.

Editorial Review:

Now fully revised—the perennially popular guide to choosing the right college

Prospective college students and their parents have been relying on Loren Pope’s expertise since 1995, when he published the first edition of this indispensable guide. This new edition profiles 41 colleges—all of which outdo the Ivies and research universities in producing performers, not only among A students but also among those who get Bs and Cs. Contents include:

• Evaluations of each school’s program and “personality”
• Candid assessments by students, professors, and deans
• Information on the progress of graduates

This new edition not only revisits schools listed in previous volumes to give readers a comprehensive assessment, it also addresses such issues as homeschooling, learning disabilities, and single-sex education.

Essential resource for top MBA programs 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is the bible for getting into the top MBA schools. I am currently in the process of applying to some of the top schools and have talked to a lot of current and recent grads, all of whom swear by this book. It walks you through all the steps required and the right way to approach the situation. I had my first round interview last week and knowing how the different schools differ in their approach helped tremendously.

STILL TBD on if I'm successful in my bid for the top schools but so far, I feel I'm getting all the right insider tips from this book.

A Complete Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I think it's one of the most complete guides for the subject. It covers many different topics in a very sound way which many other books "try to" cover in hundred of pages.

Editorial Review:

Now updated and revised.

Now with new and expanded information on Executive MBA programs, the most up-to-date school rankings, new interviews with admissions officers, and more detailed advice for younger applicants, Montauk offers an up-close and candid view of what leading MBA programs look for in an applicant.

Interesting & challenging 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I used a couple of these mysteries in my 5th grade classroom. The students enjoyed them because it was different then the way they usually practiced problem solving. The only downside to this book is that I think it is more challenging than the ages suggested. There were only a few stories that were appropriate for my 5th graders and those were still very challenging for them. I wouldn't reccommend this book to someone with a general ed. 4th grade classroom but it is perfect for junior high (6th, 7th, 8th) students!

Math Improvement the FUN way. 5 out of 5 stars.

This product helped my grand daughter who was having math difficulty better understand math concepts. She was having fun at the same time.

good book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Nice and challenging. My kids are happy with it. I give them one challenge from this book on the drive to school every morning and give them 10-15 mins to complete. It's nice to have books like this. They're only 8&9 but they cover most of it.

Editorial Review:

Humorous, reproducible math mystery stories will give your math sleuths a chance to have fun while practicing important math problem solving skills. They’re just perfect for classwork and homework and help you meet the NCTM standards. For use with Grades 4-8.

Disappointing!! This book has no words! 1 out of 5 stars.

I was very disappointed with this book. Unfortunately I purchased "Waiting for Baby" in the same order but have not received it yet. The product description does not state that it is only a picture book.

it takes a little imagination because there are no words to the book. but my son (2 years old) and i enjoy flipping through the pages and making up our own story (stories).

wondeful book for toddlers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Our 27 month old son loves this book and its companion, "Waiting for Baby" by the same author. We talk about what's going on in the pictures and he's always noticing new things, even after repeated readings. I like this book because it presents the introduction of a new baby as a natural, happy event. The mom is pictured breastfeeding not once, but twice and the dad is shown changing diapers, dressing the baby, strapping on a baby carrier and cooking dinner. It is rare to find a book which depicts both parents so actively engaging in the the care of a newborn. And the illustrations are just gentle and sweet too. Great little books for anyone with a young child.
