A good resource! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a great resource to help design an effective layout for a classroom. It takes all of the elements of the classroom into account: whole group, word study, readers' workshop areas and more! I also liked the spiral binding because it provided easy access to the desired page. I would recommend it for any elementary ed teacher.

Good book 5 out of 5 stars.

A book for our times 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Finally, a resource that gets to the point! Parents will love it- kids will wonder what hit them. In a world of excess and overindulgence, Caffrey shows us how to become parents again. In a world lacking common sense, she demonstrates an abundance of it. It is refreshing to be reminded that we have a responsibility to raise independent young men and women who will feel the need to make contributions to the world because they have a sense of pride, not entitlement!

Editorial Review:

The quality of drive provides the momentum for a person to dream and achieve, creating a unique, independent life. Without it, a person is like a rudderless boat, drifting around a flat lake. In Drive, nationally renowned educator Dr. Janine Caffrey shows how to inspire your children and develop this vital characteristic. How do I get my child excited about learning? To enroll in a good college? To move out of the house? To create his own life? Designed to assist parents, educators, and counselors to get kids of all ages off the couch and into the world, Drive outlines nine specific steps proven to beat boredom and foster self-motivation and resourcefulness. Filled with quizzes, anecdotes, and practical strategies, Drive helps parents turn “Generation Me” into “Generation Move.”

Insight into five pivotal thinking habits 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Howard Gardner is a man of many minds. The Harvard psychologist, MacArthur "genius grant" recipient and prolific author started a revolution when he claimed that human capability couldn't be reduced to a single metric. Rather than accepting IQ as the whole story of cognitive capacity, Gardner said people have "multiple intelligences," a notion he popularized in his 1983 book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Twenty-five years later, Gardner is still producing influential work on human mental skills and capabilities. In this clear, eminently useful book, Gardner describes five cognitive capacities that he predicts will be in most demand in the future and which everyone should practice. While he describes them metaphorically as "minds," these forms of thought are neither wholly innate nor immutable. All people can, through diligent practice, cultivate their disciplined mind, their synthesizing mind, their creative mind, their respectful mind and their ethical mind - and they should. Given accelerating technological change and vast increases in the flow of information and the necessity of working closely with many different kinds of people worldwide, getAbstract is of a mind to recommend this book to managers who are trying to think ahead.

Editorial Review:

In his book, Gardner defines the cognitive abilities that will command a premium in the years ahead and takes that thinking to the next level. Concise and engaging, he provides valuable insights for those charged with training and developing organizational leaders, both today and tomorrow.

This is book a must have for anyone studying African American History. If you are building a library, it cannot be complete without this writing - this is one of the foundational cornerstones.

Editorial Review:

This book is considered must reading for anyone involved in the education of blacks living in white dominated countries. The author does well to point out the shortcomings of a "Euro-centric" teaching structure that leaves out consideration for black culture and heritage. This has resulted in blacks being truly mis-educated and has caused many to live in complete contradiction to their own best interests. Woodson outlines how and why the mainstream educational system damages the personal growth of blacks and how the blame can be equally placed on black professionals -- those who become successful and enter into a corporate world that helps only themselves, without making any effort to align black education properly. This book strongly points out the importance of black history and culture, and its absence in mainstream education systems.

effective test preparation 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In the past, I did not feel like children should use test workbooks this early. After we enrolled in Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org), we realize that there are so many kids doing so well. No wonder the standard tests keep raising the bar. A low expectation from parents only leads to low achieving children. This book boosts your child's vocabulary, reading, and test taking skills effectively. It gives you a good chance to know how much your child learned in school. No matter how he was taught, the book would cover the bases and practice what he learned. We enjoyed this fine book very much!

Editorial Review:

Raise Test Scores!
Be sure kids test their best on standardized tests in reading by familiarizing them with the skills, formats, and language they need to succeed. These practice tests, collected from the reading skills practice tests offered three times a year to Scholastic News Edition 3 subscribers, are designed to look and feel like state and national tests including the Terra Nova, ITBS, CTBS, and MAT. The 15 ready -to-take practice tests are a great way to boost confidence‹and make test prep easy for you. Also includes bubble-style answer sheets and tips for administering the tests and a chart outlining specific skills tested.

Excellent resource and easy to read and apply... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Tomlinson presents the material in an easy to read and use format. The book is easy for the teacher to use immediately, either read one chapter at a time or all the way through. A great resource. Now if we could just get the regular education teachers to give it a try!!

Great teaching strategy book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I like the theory and implementation strategies behind this book! It was easy to read and understand, too. I bought it for an education/ teaching methods course and I've used it to write every lesson plan, unit plan since. It relates to the idea that classrooms are made up of so many diverse types of learners that you must try and vary your instruction. (It's a lot like Howard Gardner's "Ways of Knowing".) It gives suggestions on how to add "difference" to your lessons. A lot of school corporations near where I live are adopting "DI" as well. It's catching on along with "Understanding by Design." Differentiated instruction works really well with Special Needs students, too. I recommend that anyone teaching these students at least read a copy of the book if not keep one for their own libraries!

Editorial Review:

For education courses in Educational Psychology, Advanced Educational Psychology, Differentiated Instruction, Inclusion/Mainstreaming, Mild/Moderate Disabilities Methods, or General Methods (K-12). This brief Merrill/ASCD text provides guidance, principles, and strategies for teachers who are interested in creating learning environments that address the diversity typical of mixed-ability classrooms. The text will help educators understand what differentiated instruction is, why it is appropriate for all learners, how to begin to plan for it, and how to become comfortable enough with student differences to make school comfortable for each learner in the classroom.

great for the most part 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for the most part. Although I agree with many of his points, I disagree in the part where he proposes a reform that requires mandatory community service. In the book he mostly says that people do well when they aren't made to do something, and yes community service is great but it shouldn't be forced on people, and people should have the option to decide if that is what they want to do. That's what freedom is all about.

He's right about school. My experience in school felt like a prison, where my teachers didn't take me seriously, they sometimes liked humiliating me and my classmates, and honestly to this day, I have zero respect for teachers. I can't look back on a teacher that I actually liked. Many of them just made me follow dumb rules that had nothing to do with learning but about respecting authority.

Even as a college student, I feel that college is just another scam, its not about learning but about getting that degree so you can get a good job. Getting As and Bs isn't a sign of intelligence, but a sign that you did the work the way that your teacher wanted you to. I think true learning occurs when you are accountable to yourself for your own education.

Editorial Review:

With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers' bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City's public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto's "guerrilla teaching."

John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000).
