What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action

Any school in the United States can operate at advanced levels of effectiveness-if it is willing to implement what is known about effective schooling. "If we follow the guidance offered from 35 years of research," says author Robert J. Marzano, "we can enter an era of unprecedented effectiveness for the public practice of education." In What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action, Marzano synthesizes that research to provide clear and unequalled insight into the nature of schooling.

Marzano defines the factors affecting student achievement and offers compelling answers to once-elusive questions:

* How can schools set academic goals that do not underestimate student potential? * How critical are staff collegiality and professional development? * Do all students have equal opportunity to learn given current curriculum requirements? * Supplemental versus required content-is there room for redefinition? * What types of parental and community involvement make a real difference? * What instructional strategies really work? * What influence can an individual teacher have on students? * How can teachers manage classrooms that promote positive student-and-teacher relationships? * How can teachers structure their curricula to better sequence and pace content? * Can teachers really overcome a student's negative home environment? * How does an understanding of motivation theories help students and teachers overcome learning obstacles? * What specific learning strategies can enhance learned intelligence and background knowledge?

In each chapter, Marzano recommends specific-and attainable-action steps to implement successful strategies culled from the wealth of research data.

Schools can and do affect student achievement. In his latest work, Marzano leads the way in establishing positive approaches that can make the long-held dream of effective public education a reality.

Editorial Review:

"When we call someone lazy, we condemn a human being," writes Mel Levine, M.D. In The Myth of Laziness, the bestselling author of A Mind at a Time shows that children dismissed as unproductive or "lazy" usually suffer from what he calls "output failure" -- a neurodevelopmental dysfunction that can continue to cause difficulties into adulthood if left unchecked.

The desire to be productive is universal, says Dr. Levine, but that drive can often be frustrated by dysfunctions that obstruct output or productivity. Drawing on his clinical experience and using real-life examples of both children and adults he has worked with, Dr. Levine shows how to identify and remedy these dysfunctions. A child suffering from language production dysfunction, for example, may be incapable of clearly expressing or explaining his thoughts, thereby leading to low productivity in school. A child who has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete a project or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments. Similarly, a child with memory weaknesses may be unable to draw on his accumulated knowledge for an assignment. In each of these cases, as Dr. Levine shows, writing skills are often the key to diagnosing specific causes of output failure.

Practical, wise, and compassionate, The Myth of Laziness offers parents and teachers day-to-day strategies and support to prevent output failure and, when necessary, to help children overcome dysfunction and become productive, successful adults.

A good introduction but... 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a member of one of the D9 sororities (Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.) I found this book to be a great intro for those that don't know much about the 9 organizations which make up the NPHC. Each organization's history and achievements are briefly reviewed along with some interviews of famous members and undergrad and grad chapters. I don't however find the answers to many questions that many people (D9 and non-D9) want to know. For a more in depth look into the history, legacy, and future of the D9, as well as the WHY's of Black Greek Letter Organizations, there is a phenomenal book out there titled "African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and The Vision." This book was written by D9 professors and scholars and is well worth the read. It will answer or attempt to answer many of the questions that most want to know, such as WHY D9 organizations do what they do? and HOW did it all get started? The book African American Fraternities And Sororities: The Legacy And The Vision is a great value to D9 members and non-D9 members alike, and especially for the other ethnic orgs (other BGLOs, Latin, Asian, Multicultural) that have copied the D9 in how they currently do things but do not know WHY we/they do them. It's a part of our history and heritage and you will find many of the answers to your questions in the book. If you want a great overall look into the D9, I recommend buying both books.

Mostly buzz words and common sense 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book was only slightly helpful in my classes. The advice in this book sounds good to educators with its trendy terminology and emphasis on some amorphous "deep learning" but many students hate the collaborative exercises in this book and shut off to being taught in this manner. McKeachie is writing to other educators, none of whom understand how students in this generation actually think. Although most of the book was junk, there was the rare teaching strategy I found useful, but none of them were particularly ground-breaking or innovative.

Editorial Review:

McKeachie's Teaching Tips provides helpful strategies for dealing with both the everyday problems of university teaching and those that arise in trying to maximize learning for every student. The strategies suggested in the text are adaptable to specific classroom situations. The book does not suggest a "set of recipes" to be followed mechanically; it gives instructors the tools they need to deal with the ever-changing dynamics of teaching and learning.

An excellent treatment of a timeless topic. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is very useful in dealing with the bully in the school. This is truly a life and death issue. It's application however goes beyond the the schools. It is always applies to the work place, business, the church, the internet, the funeral arrangement conference, national politics, and international relations. Chapter seven "Is there a bullied kid in the house applies" to all these environments.

She points out that the roots of bullying are in the home. Chapter Five is excellent in revealing three types of families and how it relates to bullying. She is particularly bold in describing sexual bullying and it's
relationship to sexual harassment. Her treatment of telling and tattling can be applied not just to the schoolyard, but to any type of whistle blowing. Five stars! Excellent job on a timeless subject.

Editorial Review:

Bestselling parenting educator Barbara Coloroso draws on her decades of work with youth, parents, and teachers to debunk the misconceptions and explain what we can do to stop bullying. She explains how to read the subtle "cues and clues" that a child is being bullied; discipline rather than punish the bully; and formulate constructive school and community policies. Readers will learn: - The three kinds of bullying, and seven steps to take if you child is a bully - Four abilities that protect your child from a bully - How to help bystanders speak out and stand up for their peers - Why teaching a "code of compassion" is more effective against bullying than conflict resolution techniques - Important insights on the dangers of cliques, hazing, taunting and sexual bullying - Why zero tolerance policies can equal zero thinking...and more

An Educator's Review 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...

Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.

Editorial Review:

Packed with words of wisdom and inspiration, this is one book no administrator or teacher should be without. Filled with practical tips to improve school climate, communication skills, and fun, this must-have resource will leave you laughing your way to

Editorial Review:

You need rubrics if:
* You find yourself repeating the same comments on most student papers
* You worry that you’re grading the latest papers differently from the first
* You’re concerned about communicating the complexity of a semester-long assignment
* You question the consistency of your and your colleagues’ grading scales
* Grading is taking up far too much of your valuable time

Research shows that rubrics save professors’ time while conveying meaningful and timely feedback for students, and promoting self-regulated and independent learning. The reason rubrics are little used in higher education is that few faculty members have been exposed to their use.

At its most basic a rubric is a scoring tool that divides an assignment into its component parts and objectives, and provides a detailed description of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable levels of performance for each part.

Rubrics can be used to grade any assignment or task: research papers, book reviews, participation in discussions, laboratory work, portfolios, oral presentations, group work, and more.

This book defines what rubrics are, and how to construct and use them. It provides a complete introduction for anyone starting out to integrate rubrics in their teaching.

The authors go on to describe a variety of processes to construct rubrics, including some which involve student participation. They demonstrate how interactive rubrics--a process involving assessors and the assessed in defining the criteria for an assignment or objective--can be effective, not only in involving students more actively in their learning, but in establishing consistent standards of assessment at the program, department and campus level.
