Great resource EXCEPT for small letters 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my 3 year old- she loves it- it is easy for her to understand. I would have given this book 5 stars but, when it has you trace words it is all in small letters and most everything I read says to teach your kids capital letters first and then introduce small letters. That is my only complaint though!

It's designed to help teachers implement practical, thoughtful ideas for teaching comprehension in contemporary classrooms through the seven core strategies that successful readers use to engage with texts.

Packed with new classroom examples, grounded in the latest research, and written in the same accessible tone as the first edition, reaffirms the essential elements of powerful comprehension teaching introduced in the first edition while adding and updating features, including:

  • new tools to help teachers create effective reader's workshops

Editorial Review:

According to author Mike Schmoker, there is a yawning gap between the most well-known essential practices and the reality of most classrooms. This gap persists despite the hard, often heroic work done by many teachers and administrators. Schmoker believes that teachers and administrators may know what the best practices are, but they aren’t using them or reinforcing them consistently. He asserts that our schools are protected by a buffer—a protective barrier that prevents scrutiny of instruction by outsiders. The buffer exists within the school as well. Teachers often know only what is going on in their classrooms—and they may be completely in the dark about what other teachers in the school are doing. Even principals, says Schmoker, don’t have a clear view of the daily practices of teaching and learning in their schools.

Schmoker suggests that we need to get beyond this buffer to confront the truth about what is happening in classrooms, and to allow teachers to learn from each other and to be supervised properly. He outlines a plan that focuses on the importance of consistent curriculum, authentic literacy education, and professional learning communities for teachers.

What will students get out of this new approach? Learning for life. Schmoker argues passionately that students become learners for life when they have more opportunities to engage in strategic reading, writing with explicit guidance, and argument and discussion.

Through strong teamwork, true leadership, and authentic learning, schools and their students can reach new heights. Results Now is a rally cry for educators to focus on what counts. If they do, Schmoker promises, the entire school community can count on unprecedented achievements.

I got a FIVE on the AP exam 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

By WWHS student

I love this book. It helped me get great grades on tests in class and a 5 on the AP exam! Our textbook was more than 1200 pages -- too long! I bought this review book a few months after the class started. But I should have bought it at the beginning of the year because once I began to study from it, I started to do better on class tests.

My teacher always gave us essay questions on her tests and the Free-Response Questions and Answers at the end of every chapter are really great. They really explain the material clearly. Also, the review book has 1 diagnostic test and 2 practice tests. That's more than any other review book that I saw.

Editorial Review:

Three full-length practice exams are presented with all questions answered and explained. The author also presents detailed reviews of all test topics and includes multiple-choice and free-response questions with answers at the end of each topic’s chapter. Test topics include: biochemistry, the cell, cell respiration, photosynthesis, cell division, heredity, the molecular basis of inheritance, classification, evolution, plants, animal physiology, the human immune system, animal reproduction and development, ecology, animal behavior, and an extensive laboratory section.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This series of books is fabulous. My husband and I even enjoy reading them. We bought three books in this series ( fourth grade, second and Kindergarten) and all of them are wonderful. The kids really enjoy reading them and they are packed full of information. Every parent should purchase these books for their kids/grandkids.

Excellent Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

We purchased this book because we wanted to make sure our child was learning everything he needed to be learning at his grade level. It is very user friendly; it is written in such a way that it can be read by the child independently or jointly with a parent or caregiver. Our child actually looks forward to the time each day when we sit down and look at it together, and it has helped supplement and reinforce what he has learned in class. Highly recommend this series. (We have a kindergartner who also insists that we read from the book written for his grade level daily.)

Editorial Review:

Since its publication in 1998 Craft Lessons has become a mainstay of writing teachers, both new and experienced. Readers value the pithy, practical lessons each printed on one page and appreciate the instructional language geared to three grade-level groupings: K 2, 3 4, and 5 8.
In the decade since Craft Lessons' publication the world has changed in many ways, yet one thing has remained constant: teachers continue to feel starved for time. With new curriculum mandates, daily specials, pull-outs, and precious time devoted to test preparation, the situation has never been worse, and the need for a succinct resource like Craft Lessons has never been greater.
The features that made Craft Lessons so valuable have been augmented. This edition includes:
* Seventeen brand new craft lessons; many based on veteran teachers' observations about typical student writing.
* Revisions to other craft lessons: model texts that have gone out of print have been replaced with current titles, and the resource materials sections have been expanded.
* New thinking about teaching elements of craft and the reading-writing connection.
*Two new indexes: a handy subject index to make it easier to find specific craft lessons, and an index that shows how these craft lessons can be integrated into Ralph and JoAnn's curriculum resource on the qualities of writing Ideas, Design, Language, and Presentation.
The 95 lessons in this book provide a wealth of information for teaching leads, character, endings, stronger verbs, and much more. This new edition reestablishes Craft Lessons as the crucial desert island book for harried writing teachers everywhere.

Popular Book, Reliable Concept, Some Mistakes 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am a full time SAT tutor and have almost all my students study this book. It is perhaps the most popular book of its kind, and for good reason-- Carnevale's effective approach to acquiring new SAT words. She presents words by theme. For example, the first chapter's theme, Cat Got Your Tongue? presents "Words Relating to Using Few Words or Being Quiet." They are: brevity, concise, laconic, pithy, quiescent, reticent, succinct, taciturn, and terse. I find that studying words in categories, as presented in this book, is an effective way for students to (1) learn more words and (2) internalize the sometimes subtle differences between synonyms. The book also has several sentences for each word to illustrate the word's proper context.
On the other hand, there are several mistakes in the book. For example, the introduction refers to the books approach as yielding, "expoential vocabulary growth" (the "n" in "exponential" is missing). In chapter 9, the book says correct use of "miserly" is "Using a sheet of paper on only one side is a sign of a miserly individual."
These mistakes take away only slightly from the book's value since the concept is so solid and the words appear so often on tests.

Editorial Review:

Updated and expanded to reflect the vocabulary and format of the current SAT’s Critical Reading section, Hot Words for the SAT presents and defines more than 365 words that frequently appear on SAT exams. The book is divided into 35 lessons, each consisting of dozens of illustrative sentences and a thematic word cluster. Each cluster contains words having similar meanings or words that apply to similar circumstances. Also included are new pronunciation keys for each word, memory tips, expanded review exercises following every five lessons, and an alphabetical word index. College-bound students who successfully complete the book’s exercises and master these words will expand their lifelong vocabulary and improve their chance for acceptance at the school of their choice.

My favorite of the GRE prep books! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In preparing for the GRE, I did some research as to which prep books were user's favorites and then narrowed them down to the top 3: Barron's, Kaplan and Princeton Review, not necessarily in that order but it turned out that way for me. I used the Barron's GRE as my main prep book, in terms of memorising word lists, studying the basic math formulas, and applying math skills towards problem-solving. However, Barron's is not very helpful in terms of preparing for the essay component which didn't really matter that much since the essay component is the least important component of the GRE anyway. So for the purposes of preparing for the verbal and quantitative component, Barron's was adequate.

That being said, I would recommend supplementing Barron's GRE with at least two other prep books. I found Kaplan's and the Princeton Review prep books [with the CD-ROM] to be excellent resources in helping me develop familiarity with the CAT model. However, I place Kaplan above the Princeton Review as I found the Princeton Review's online access tools too cumbersome and not user-friendly. The CAT tests provided on both though were quite good.

All in all, Barron's GRE Prep [I got the one without the CD-ROM] is a handy study guide covering both verbal and quantitative how-tos. But, you will need some other supplements in order to get more practice tests done, as well as preparing for the essay component.

Editorial Review:

This 17th edition of Barron’s GRE manual reflects recent Graduate Record Exams and presents six full-length model exams with all questions answered and explained. Tests are similar to recent actual GREs in length, question types, and degree of difficulty. The manual also reviews all GRE test topics: antonym, analogy, and sentence-completion questions, reading comprehension, analytical writing, quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation, and math.

A Very Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

It is a bit useless to review this book for it's value as an AP study guide, because the AP exams were two days ago, and next year there will be a major change to the content of the exam (No more APCS-AB).

However, I can say this is a very well made study helper. A little sense of humor combined with solid writing, thorough and frequent sections of example code, practice problems for every section, full explanations of every problem, chapter recaps and a specific diagnostic test will teach you all you need to know.

The book assumes it is being used as a supplement of a Java course, or by someone with a cursory knowledge of the language. This book is a great resource for teaching yourself (or anyone, for that matter) how to program, however I would recommend you take a basic Java tutorial online first.

Editorial Review:

The new fourth edition of Barron’s Advanced Placement Computer Science test preparation manual has been updated with a new case study. This new GridWorld Case Study will be tested on the AP exam starting in May 2008. The manual presents four full-length AP practice exams, two each for Levels A and AB. Two of these exams are presented as diagnostic tests, with charts detailing the topics for each question. All four model tests have questions answered and explained. Prospective test takers will also find an extensive subject review, starting with a review of Java 5.0 and going on to cover all topics questioned in both the Level A and Level AB exams. There are new sections on storage of numbers and random numbers.
