Editorial Review:

What is understanding, and how does it differ from knowing? How will we know that students truly understand and can apply their knowledge in meaningful ways? How might we design our courses and units to emphasize understanding and "uncoverage" rather than "coverage"? These are questions that The Understanding by Design Handbook guides users in answering.

The handbook is the companion book to Understanding by Design (ASCD, 1998). Understanding by Design provides the conceptual foundation for a theory of understanding that is based on six facets of understanding. The handbook offers the practical side: a unit planning template, worksheets, exercises, design tools, design standards and tests, and a peer review process for learning and applying the ideas in Understanding by Design. Following the logic of the authors' backward design approach, handbook materials show users how to plan curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

The handbook was developed to assist educators interested in designing units and courses of study that focus on developing and deepening students' understanding. It is also intended to serve as a resource for undergraduate and graduate-level coursework and in-service professional development. Various users, including teachers (elementary through graduate levels), school-based administrators, curriculum directors, subject matter specialists, staff developers, and assessment-evaluation personnel, will benefit from these practical and proven ideas and resources.

A great guide! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book contains a brief overview
about world history from every culture.
I highly recommend it!

Lengthy history review, but inaccurate practice problems. 4 out of 5 stars.

I took the 2008 AP World History exam. To prepare for the test, I read Kaplan's, Barron's, and Princeton Review's AP World History test prep books. Of the three, Barron's has the lengthiest history review. Pretty much the entire book is history review. The review is really detailed, and actually seems more of a textbook than a test prep book. In addition to lengthy reviews, this book also summarizes each time period, breaking it down into sections, such as gender role or political structure, really well. This book has a lot of practice questions, 10 almost every few pages. Unfortunately, the sample tests and practice questions don't reflect the actual AP World History exam questions at all. The practice questions in this book are more context questions than conceptual questions, and doesn't really challenge the student to think about the interactions between different cultures, which is basically what the AP World History exam test is about. This book does an even worst job to prepare you for the essays; although plenty of essay questions are provided, none of them have a sample essay so that students can see what might be expected of them in their essay; the general tips/suggestions in the beginning of the book just doesn't cut it. If you have several weeks before the test, you may want to consider this book for its lengthy review. I just got my grade, a 5.

Review is Helpful, Test is Not 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The review in this book is pretty good. That's why I like it. But the practice tests have to be taken with a grain of salt. Many of the questions on there are just ridiculous. 2-dimensional diagrams of pi bonds: probably not on the test (especially the rather crudely drawn ones presented here). And the math is not representative of the AP Chemistry test. On the real test, you are not expected to do complex logarithms and square roots in your head. And, as mentioned earlier, the answer key is riddled with mistakes. These include answers to the wrong question, thinking the question was the opposite of what was asked, and answers that just don't match up with calculations. Also, their explanations are short at best.

    Editorial Review:

Updated to reflect the most recent Advanced Placement Chemistry exams, this manual presents two diagnostic tests and three full length practice exams, all with questions answered and explained. The author also presents additional routine and more challenging problems in every chapter. Also included is a complete compact review of chemistry topics covering the structure of matter, chemical bonding, states of matter, physical chemistry, chemical reactions, and other topics that appear on the AP exam.

Don't let this book collect dust! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Out of Dust is a book every young reader in American needs to read. Written in poetry form, Karen Hesse's book reveals the year long evolution of fourteen year old Billie Jo. Set in Oklahoma's Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, the story exposes the raw emotions of a young girl as she struggles to survive the most haunting experience of her life. This story will help experienced young readers, ages 11-13, understand the complexity of life for children their own age during a historical era of our Nation's history. Whereas most recollections of the Great Depression are depicted through adult views, Out of Dust is told through the eyes of Billie Jo which will allow children to make a connection between the issues of the time and the ones they are dealing with today. This beautifully written book is an excellent introduction to the Great Depression and offers multiple opportunities for exploration of the era.

Kaplan NYSTCE test prep 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book helped me with the multiple choice aspect of the test, (I am an english student so multiple choice is extremely difficult for me; one concrete answer) but to tell you the truth, when i finally had to take the test, majority of the questions were reading comp. This book prepared me for math questions and other material that weren't on the test. Although, I do find that material useful, so i don't feel like an idiot when someone asks me the median of a group of numbers, the whole book is just lacking a little something. The book defiantly helped me prepare though and has good test taking tips.

REVIEW OF LIBERAL ARTS FROM COLLEGE 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This books is a good review of Liberal Arts from college and high school. Unfortanately, the test isn't about what you remember from History class. The test is a tedius experience of reading comprehension. You read the passage and then answer questions. The skills you need are being a critical reader and comprehending what you read. The math and Science review may be helpful for some. My advice would be to just review the format of the test, relax and go take the test. This book had me nervous about taking the test before I took it. It has been a few years since I took History, science etc. The book makes you feel that you need to remember all the stuff that you crammed and forgot many years ago. You dont need to. If you can comprehend and think critically about things, you should do fine. A review for this test would be about 1/4 the size and be worth about $3.99. They add a lot of stuff to make the book big and charge a "big book" price. This book did more to intimidate me than help me. Having said that, if you master this book, you will definitely pass the test. You will be a more "educated person" by reviewing all that stuff you learned many years ago. You would have just wasted a lot of unnecessary time if your goal is to just pass the test. Good Luck.

It's an okay book, overall 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book isn't all that great. I bought it in hopes of refreshing my memory, and since AP Statistics has some intricate details to it, this book doesn't really go into them. The chapters contain A LOT of examples which helps the student see the different types of problems he/she can encounter, but there is little explanation of general ideas. The author relies a lot on defining terms through examples and through few words. The chapter questions in the end are also flawed because the answers turn out to be those that AREN'T covered by the author in the chapter reviews. In addition, the way the chapters are broken up are incoherent and inconsistent to follow, and you end up running to (again) examples of ideas than the actual definition. I thought that this was fine because in the end, I could grasp the concept, but it turns out I'll just be memorizing the different questions the AP test could ask than actually understand the concept.

My best bet is that this book is good for taking the 6 practice tests, but for general review, one should get the CliffsAP Statistics or even The Princeton Review.

The Barron's book initially got good reviews on the previous editions, but this one doesn't live up to that. I'm ending up buying another book and dropped this book for studying for the AP Exam that's in 3 weeks.

    ~Hope my review helped (:~

    Editorial Review:

Six full-length Advanced Placement practice Statistics exams are presented in this manual with all questions answered and explained. Equally valuable to prospective test takers is the author’s 15-chapter topic review, covering virtually everything they will encounter on the actual exam. Topics for review are divided into four general themes: Exploratory Analysis, Planning a Study, Probability, and Statistical Inference. Additional multiple-choice and free-response questions with answers are presented at the end of all 15 chapters. Detailed appendices include exam-taking advice, an AP scoring guide, a guide to basic uses of TI-83/TI-84 calculators, and more.
