Why going to school ? 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

From a high school student's point of view, reading Dewey couldn't provide something else than hope for educational systems, most of which, despite the efforts of making a school a more living atmosphere, organizations still remain too mechanical in learning procedures and detached from social applications regarding the capabilities they serve.

Originally from Cameroon, I've had the opportunity to explore three educational systems from different cultural influence each. It was an advantage that surely opened my mind to different perspectives by interacting with different cultures in different social contexts, but especially carried me out to realize how the so called "education" - in general, but in high school in particular - shortly addresses fundamental needs as much individually as socialy, since people tend to ignore its essential functions or misunderstand the concepts it involves, precisely because their implications are so general that they shouldn't be analyzed in separated contexts, school and society, as far as they are, with respect, one a component of the other but the other being the expression of the first one in a long term.

By observing both components as a whole, Dewey proposes a model that doesn't necessarily apply to actual issues or give factual solutions, but at least redefines "education" by integrating inherent aspects to human nature in its double acception - as a group as much as an individual -, which reveals the values traditional education still mostly hides.

I delibarately took the initiative of question what high school didn't explained to me, and probably often forget to ask itself. In what ways education serves people in the aim of blooming personally and socially ? which role schools are therefore supposed to play and in which patterns ? The questions are so simple that the answers appear obvious. In fact, they should be when the problematic is carefully put. this is the reason most people can get it wrong and sometimes don't even try to question what is already established. Dewey was an excellent starting point for my research and I recommend it to EVERYONE, not especially those concerned with education because it shouldn't be a matter of a restricted segment of people. Education is everywhere. Sorry for my english :)

Editorial Review:

This edition brings Dewey's educational theory into sharp focus, framing his two classic works by frank assessments, past and present, of the practical applications of Dewey's ideas. In addition to a substantial introduction in which Philip W. Jackson explains why more of Dewey's ideas haven't been put into practice, this edition restores a "lost" chapter, dropped from the book by Dewey in 1915.

Biased! 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

While this book may contain some good information on multicultrual education I find it difficult to get past the bias presented in it. Based on statements like

"A crucial fact in understanding racism is that whites see themselves as superior to persons and groups of color, and as a result exercise their power to prevent people of color from securing the prestige, power, and privilege held by whites."

and

"Whites go through a developmental stages as they develop their racial identity and abandon racism."

The authors seem to presume that all whites are racist, power hungry, pigs. Knowing that such a generalization is patently false how can I trust the content describing peoples of other cultural backgrounds.

Editorial Review:

This well-respected book helps readers understand pluralism and the complexities of cultural backgrounds and how to use this knowledge successfully in the classroom. It appropriately describes seven critical microcultures to which students and teachers belong: class; ethnicity and race; gender; exceptionality; religion; language; and age. These microcultures form the foundation for understanding pluralism and multicultural education. A focus on current issues features sections on hate groups, school violence, social justice, culturally responsible teaching, and teaching for democracy. Video insights incorporated into each chapter promote stimulating social and cultural discussions around video segments from ABC News. For teachers striving to deliver an equitable education to all students.

Illegible Graphs - Poor Proof Reading!! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Only purchase this book if you want to be forced to do the publisher's proof reading for them. Sentences end as if someone just got tired of typing...and obviously the proof readers were asleep.

The pie chart graphs in the sample tests key on various shades of grey, and are indistinguishable and frequently wrong making it nearly impossible to divine the correct answer.

Sample test answers are correctly derived in the answer sections, but the letters in the sample test answer keys are frequently transcribed wrong. You'll only discover this if you actually go through and work the problems in the explanation section and discover that the answer key is incorrect. In my experience, about 10% of the answers in the sample test keys are wrong.

I just took the CBEST test and found that, fortunately, the test is prepared more professionally than this study guide. If you can work your way through the guide, you'll probably pass. However, you'll waste lots of time correcting errors.

I'd recommend another guide! Don't select the thinest study guide...this one....like I did.

Editorial Review:

This brand-new manual prepares prospective teachers in the California public school system to pass all three sections of the required statewide test: Reading, Math, and Writing. Following a general introduction and overview of the CBEST, the authors present diagnostic tests in reading and math, both with answers and analysis. Each diagnostic is followed by a full-length test that is much like the Reading and Math tests on the actual CBEST. Both tests come with answer sheets and answer keys. The books following chapter covers the Writing Test, and presents example essays with an analysis pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each. The book concludes with additional brief practice tests and answer keys.

New edition helpful for the synthesis question 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I used this book this summer in a prep course our district has designed to give students a boost going into AP Language and Composition as their first AP course. I found Part III, the comprehensive review, to be most helpful in preparing students to use the skills needed for analysis, argument, and synthesis. AP exam multiple-choice questions are easy to find, but I like that this book offers something more: a comprehensive overview of the essays and the literary/rhetorical terms and a clear outline of the body of knowledge needed to approach the exam successfully. I also trust Murphy and Rankin as experienced AP teachers and exam readers. My students were not bored, and went into their AP courses feeling confident.

I run a daycare and bought these books to help guide our daily activities. I've only been using it for a few weeks, but love it. I also bought the Daily Curriculum book co-authored also by Pam Schiller, who helped write this one. They have a lot of similar things, but enough different that I kept them both. There is lots of ideas in the book for kids with varying interests and it's made planning educational stuff a lot easier for me.

1 Thumb up... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book expecting oodles of great ideas...One great thing is the way that it organizes themes with each unit broken down into days and learning centers. However, the actual ideas are pretty general and although some are interesting, I have definitely found better ones- some of them don't even seem to correlate with the theme they are listed under...

I did get some good ideas, but would suggest 2 much better options for the money that provide more themed ideas with details rather than just general activities. Try: "The Complete Daily Curriculum" by: Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps AND "Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom" by: Judy Herr

Editorial Review:

This resource supplies 25 two-week themes, with a total of over 2,000 activities and ideas. Paperback, 463 pages.

Editorial Review:

Teachers have always used the school calendar to plan instruction. Now, using a standard computer word-processing program, they can collect real-time information about what is actually taught to create "curriculum maps." These maps provide a clear picture of what is happening in their classes at specific points during the school year.

The benefits of this kind of mapping are obvious for integrating curriculum: when curriculum maps are developed for every grade level, educators see not only the details of each map, but also the "big picture" for that school or district. They can see where subjects already come together--and where they don't, but probably should.

In Mapping the Big Picture, Heidi Hayes Jacobs describes a seven-step process for creating and working with curriculum maps, from data collection to ongoing curriculum review. She discusses the importance of asking "essential questions" and of designing assessments that reflect what teachers know about the students in their care. She also offers a viable alternative to the "curriculum committees" that are part of almost every school district in the United States.

The book concludes with more than 20 sample curriculum maps from real schools, all of which were developed using the process described in this book.

great for families with more than one 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you're juggling a few children at different ages (I have one school ager and two toddlers) this book is a great find. We can tear out pages to take them on errands. Very little preparation is required, just review the directions and assist child when needed. The areas your child is struggling with will be pretty glaring, so you can make quick review lessons to takle the problem areas. Having a worksheet based curriculum allows time for bible and life-skill lessons, as well as reading time with books of your choice. My child looks forward to his worksheets. The short and flexible lessons allow him to absorb the important stuff without feeling overwhelmed (he has adhd). It's also great for his confidence to get such immediate feedback.

Victoria LeSage's Summer Vacation! 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I used this book with my daughter Victoria during her summer vacation 2002. She has been diagnosed ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). After having a tough year in kindergarten I wanted to make sure she had a head start on all the learning requirements for 1st grade. As her first week of 1st grade came to a close we received many comments on her reading skills and other skills. I enjoyed using this book as a 1 on 1 tool with Victoria and her self-confidence has been boosted because she does see that all the hard work this summer has paid off. She completed 200 pages of the 440 + pages of work and will hopefully complete the book on weekends and vacations so that she can start the next level next summer. Highly recommended.
