Hooks and Hate Speech 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 66 people found this review helpful.

We read this book in class at the graduate level and her ideas caused a great deal of controversy. Some loved her and others were sure she was radical with no agenda except for blaming others for her anger. I thought that her book was non-academic because it was not an academic piece of writing. Color or gender have nothing to do with it. I was not impressed by her ranting against white middle class educational values because she was a beneficiary of a scholarship that helped her achieve her education. Besides, at least in this book, she can't get past her anger to give real examples of transformative education in the classroom, except to assure the reader she practiced it. Not good enough. Playing the race-card, flagrant self-promotion and hate speech is not enough. Being a revolutionary requires more than a polemic against the things you don't like. I wasn't impressed.

Editorial Review:

In this book, bell hooks, one of America's leading black intellectuals, shares her philosophy of the classroom, offering ideas about teaching that fundamentally rethink democratic participation. Hooks advocates the process of teaching students to think critically and raises many concerns central to the field of critical pedagogy, linking them to feminist thought. In the process, these essays face squarely the problems of teachers who do not want to teach, of students who do not want to learn, of racism and sexism in the classroom, and of the gift of freedom that is, for hooks, the teacher's most important goal.

What can one say about this book - it's one of the best ever! 5 out of 5 stars.

As both an author and reader of fiction, I was impressed with The lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Maybe it is because I have always enjoyed a book that could hold my attention and make me think at the same time. In a nutshell, the characters are believable and yet a little out of the ordinary and the story line interesting. Give this book a try.

Although I read the story as a child, I recently listened to the audio book during my commute to work. The reader does a fantastic job creating a distinct voice for each character and I thoroughly enjoyed the story all over again. I recommend that anyone who read the story as a child, revisit it again with this fun audio version.

Editorial Review:

Provides secondary educators with the information and skills they need to establish management systems in today's richly multicultural classroom, and is based on the authors' 25 years of extensive research conducted in more than 500 classrooms. It addresses the planning decisions teachers must make, including arranging the physical space, establishing rules and procedures, planning and conducting instruction, encouraging appropriate behavior, addressing problem behavior, and using good communication skills with care to the increasingly ethnically diverse classroom profile. All examples, checklists, case studies, and group activities are designed specifically for the secondary level. Promotes effective learning and smoothly-functioning classrooms with practical, step-by-step guidelines that emphasize proactive planning. New case studies in Chapter 10 teach inclusion by expanding on the importance of teaching every student. Encourages educators to rise to the diversity challenge. Completely updated readings with special attention to culturally diverse students and students living in extreme poverty provide readers with important information and actual case studies. This new edition maximizes technology tools in the classroom by introducing technology management. Chapters 1-6 include information on technology safety for students, using technology to manage classrooms, incorporating technology with developing rules and routines, managing special groups, and designing cooperative learning. Very Useful 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book was extremely helpful to us in a 6th Grade Language Arts unit. this is filled with GAMES and ACTIVE ways to explore nouns, verbs, sentences - types, fragments, and run-ons.

Using the student's multiple intelligences, you actually make language interesting! You read the lesson idea beforehand, gather materials, and then lead the child or class through an activity.

I found it the perfect program to mix with dry sentence diagramming from elsewhere - to lift up the lesson. Afte such creative fun, my son didn't mind getting in front of a blackboard with me to diagram a few sentences.

Also, instead of just deciding if a verb was a verb, we now decide if it is "vivid" and look at nouns as specific or general - great for strengthening creative writing...and with activities across all learning styles, not lecture. That is hard to find in middle school language arts.

As a homeschooler, I did notice two teacher terms used (perhaps this is what the earlier reviewer was referring to) - mnemonics (rhymes for teaching) and rubric (like a short chart explaining something) - and some of the activities have to be adapted as they were designed for a group - still most activities didn't need any adaptation and I was totally pleased with the way my child responded to these active lessons.

Scholastic Books Are TopNotch for Homeschooling. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I like to use two or three different textbooks per subject. Scholastic wins my approval, as well as Dorling Kindersley, Learning Horizons and School Zone products. We are currently using "Scholastic Success with 1st Grade Workbook; Math, Reading, Writing, Grammar and Maps." I really like their presentation of topics in each workbook. They tell you what is to be learned, give good practice pages, then assess what has been learned after each section. I am homeschooling my first grader and am very pleased with Scholastic's approach to learning. I have previous experience as an elementary school principal and head teacher in a multi-grade school. I plan to use Scholastic books as much as possible.

make the knowledge stick 5 out of 5 stars.

Good writing cannot be achieved overnight. Young kids need to learn and write often to build their skills. Grammar is often left to intuition in school. Taking tests will help to clarify the right way from the wrong ways explicitly. My child used this book for assessment as well as for learning. Very good contents worth every penny we spent. The book is short though; my child finished it in 3 weeks. Looking for similar tests, I found Beestar (www.beestar.org) pretty good, too. My child's writing and test skills are definitely improving with such grammar drills.

Editorial Review:

Practicing skills has never been so easy! This ready-to-use resource includes more than 40 fun practice pages. The simple directions and fun exercises make them perfect for kids to use independently in school or as homework. For use with Grade 2.

Not a lot of content 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book contains reproducible mini-books, bingo cards, flash cards, some word search puzzles and fill-in activities. In my opinion, the fill-ins are a bit too challenging. I even had trouble with them. The only thing in this book really "worth it" that I couldn't make as well myself, are the mini-books. The mini-books each contain several different sight words, so they seem to me to be more effective for review of words the student has already learned than in the initial learning of them.

Learning Sight Words is Easy! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book has excellent resources to teach sight words. The Bingo Games are a good hands on activity for the children to learn. The story books are another good source for learning to help children grasp memorization of sight words.

Editorial Review:

Put young learners on the path to reading with engaging, reproducible activities that teach the top 100 sight words! Skill-building activities help children learn sight words, strengthen reading fluency, and expand vocabulary. This teacher-written resource is packed with Fabulous Fill-ins, Word-Search Puzzles, Make & Share Mini-Books, and more! Perfect for nurturing Spanish language literacy. For use with Grades K-2.
