Change your mind 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a profound little book that makes a cogent argument for effective change in individual and social thought processes. It will change the way you think about oppression and what it actually is for those who are oppressed. This is a book for everyone but especially for those who want to make a change for the better in themselves and the society at large. A thought provoking and challenging book!

Editorial Review:

This text argues that the ignorance and lethargy of the poor are the direct result of the whole economic, social and political domination. By being kept in a situation in which it is practically impossible to achieve a critical awareness and response the disadvantaged are kept "submerged". The book suggests that in some countries the oppressors use the system to maintain this "culture of silence". Through the right kind of education, the book suggests, avoiding authoritarian teacher-pupil models and based on the actual experiences of students and on continual shared investigation, every human being, no matter how impoverished or illiterate, can develop a new awareness of self, and the right to be heard.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, Ron Clark's New York Times bestseller that's changing America one child at a time!

The runaway bestseller that's a must-have for every parent and teacher. How many authors would travel coast to coast on a bus to get their book into as many hands as possible? Not many. But that's just what Ron Clark, author of The Essential 55, did to keep his book and message in the public eye. And it worked. After his Oprah appearance, sales skyrocketed: we've sold more than 850,000 copies in six months! The book sat tenaciously on the New York Times bestseller list for 11 weeks. Ron Clark was featured on the Today show, and in the Chicago Tribune, Good Housekeeping, and the New York Daily News -- not to mention the calls we've received from teachers and parents who want to get their hands on Ron's guidelines for teaching children.

Now in paperback, The Essential 55 will be the perfect book for parents and teachers to slip into their own backpacks, to read on the train or at lunch, and to highlight the sections that resonate for them. And with an author who is truly a partner in getting his message to the masses, we just can't lose.

what a fine book 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for those kids getting started with independent reading. The authors give great passages and problems specifically for the objectives in the 2nd grade curriculum. The practice items enforce what kids taught in school that otherwise just forgotten. The book offers many fine reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises. Your kids can never have too much of them.

I like such practices as the reading is checked by the questions, so you know objectively how much is understood. Otherwise, your child may read many funny books but still has a poor comprehension. Another great resource like this is the Beestar ELA programs (www.beestar.org). They cover everything required in the curriculum, so you are confident that your child has obtained the expected knowledge and skills regardless how his teacher teaches him.

Editorial Review:

Practicing skills has never been so easy! This ready-to-use resource includes more than 40 fun practice pages. The simple directions and fun exercises make them perfect for kids to use independently in school or as homework. For use with Grade 4.

Therapist on your nightstand! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I thought I knew a lot about 'parenting' until I became one! I have one easy-going child that makes parenting seems like a breeze and one who is so wired and always pushing limits so far that I didn't like the person I was becoming. I was VERY frustrated and came across this book. I hate labeling so I don't like the title much, and carrying it around I wanted to put a darn book cover on it so others would not see it! The contents however are thought-provoking and profound. I never realized the slump that my son and I had gotten into... him pushing, my reacting... everything seemed negative. Things got worse before they got better. I am still reading the book and still implementing the ideas. However, I am realizing that as they say 1. My son enjoys playing with me like his live toy, 2. He always gets my attention by doing something negative.

I have implemented the strategy of noticing him when he's doing something that is not negative, and telling him I notice him in a neutral way (this way I am not giving him false praise but allowing him to see that I really DO pay attention to him). I found that alone has made a huge difference. I also realize that most of my talking to him was "don't......." which is NOT a life for the poor guy! I have stopped reacting to his inappropriate behaviors. In the book they compare it to a video game.... kids do good at video games because if the do wrong, they get an immediate consequence and there's no wiggle room (unlike mom who allows that and can be talked into/out of something), and video games always inspire kids to do better because they are always rewarded with flashing lights and whistles etc. So while I am perhaps a bit preliminary in my review, I have to say that this book is a TRUE help, especially if you are your wits end and ALL the best traditional parenting in the world is JUST NOT WORKING!

Editorial Review:

Transforming the Difficult Child brings to life a new way of shifting intense children to a solid life of success. The Nurtured Heart Approach puts a refreshing spin on both parenting and teaching and reveals new techniques and strategies that create thoroughly positive behaviors. This is the newly updated 2008 revision.

The Jesus I used to know 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Philip Yancey, in THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW, lets slip with a few secrets that you never learned in Sunday School (nor even, for that matter, in THE DA VINCI CODE). Example: Have you heard the one about Jesus catching a bad case of leprosy? (p. 79). [He got it from rubbing spit-and-mud on an elderly leper, neglecting then to wash his hands before lunch. Two weeks later, when the lesions appeared, Jesus healed himself using the same trusted remedy, and Presto! he was good to go.]

Yancey's disclosures are precisely what make this book so important: Indeed, THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW has been "Critically acclaimed as the most significant book of the last ten years" (and it's not just Phil Yancey who says so, I take that quote directly from the book jacket).

Phil grew up long before the days of Christian video games, like that one in which you blast to smithereens the Jews who want to nail Jesus to the cross. As a child, Phil Yancey thought that Jesus was just some two-dimensional bearded figure in a boring flannelgraph story; after which, the teacher gave you KoolAid and sugar cookies. Later, as a teen, Phil was able to admire Jesus as a role model--a bootlegger who, when his Mom rebuked him, sassed her with such rude remarks as "Woman, what have I to with THEE?" But when Phil (as a grown man) finally came to know the true Lord of glory, he discovered "a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying"--not unlike Robert Powell in Franco Zeffirelli's film version (p. 77); in fact, I'd say almost EXACTLY like Robert Powell in Franco Zeffirelli's film version.

I actually like Jesus, quite a lot. Jesus, back when I first knew him, was (a.) the Son of Yahveh, and (b.) a very nice, well-adjusted person, which, when you consider those two facts side by side, is no small accomplishment. And I totally agree with most of what Phil has to say in this book about the real Jesus: "brilliant," yes; "creative," yes; "challenging," absolutely. I endorse all of his epithets except the last: "ultimately satisfying?" Not! Just ask Mary Magdalene, she'll back me up. "What would Jesus do?" is a fascinating question, but it's exactly what we never knew; and (trust me!) no one tried harder to find out the answer, than Mary Magdalene.

My favourite part of Phil's book is Chapter 4, "Temptation: Showdown in the Desert." Here's the story, which is one that Philip Yancey never used to know. In 28 CE, Jesus and I spent six weeks together, hiking in the wilderness and then taking a tour of Jerusalem. We talked. We reminisced. We shared our fantasies. My idea was for Jesus to have a little fun while he lived among humankind, maybe even commit a harmless sin or two, just as a life-experience; but he was not open to that suggestion (Mark 1:13). When he became hungry, I tempted him to turn stones into bread. He didn't bite. When he felt discouraged, I tempted him to throw himself off a pinnacle without getting hurt, thereby to prove his divinity. He didn't jump. Testing the limits of his courtesy, I offered him a sizable chunk of real estate - the entire planet - if he would pay me a single compliment of the sort Yahveh gets every day of the year. No thanks. And when he was horny - yes, Jesus was tempted in all points like any other man, but without sin - I'd catch his attention with some short-togaed Roman shiksa and whisper in his ear and say, "Hey, Jesus, how'd you like some o' that before returning to Heaven!" (Hebrews 4:15).

But Jesus would just his squeeze eyes shut in that cute way he has, and say, "Woe unto you, Lucifer, for trying to make me think about that!" (Matt. 4:1-11).

In retrospect, I have always felt my timing was off: for it was immediately after the baptismal service - right after he saw his Father looking down on us from Heaven - that I tempted Jesus to dabble in sin. I should have tempted him to dabble sooner, during his adolescence. Instead, Jesus' unassailable virtue struck a harmful blow to my self-esteem. It's quite unusual when I earnestly tempt someone to sin, for my suggestions to be rejected flat out. But with Jesus I hit a brick wall. I tried every rhetorical, Jesuitical, trick in the book. I could not even make Jesus WANT to dabble in sin. So I guess you could say that, between the two of us, Jesus proved himself the better man. He is certainly more obedient than I am. Well, more power to him! I've got no beef with Jesus. I just wish that I could have got to know him a little better before he scooted back up to Heaven and left us with a planet full of Christians.

Editorial Review:

Yancey invites readers to share his personal quest for answers to his questions about Jesus' life. The Jesus I Never Knew is an intimate, faith-building look at the major parts of Jesus' life--his family, his teachings, the miracles, and his death and resurrection. This book peels away stereotypes and challenges comfort zones with fresh perspectives on the authentic Jesus and his sayings.

Fresh approach to curriculum design 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've used this book for three years in my graduate Curriculum Design courses for teachers. My students are practicing teachers who have seen dozens of lesson planning approaches and don't need some new theory just for the fun of it. But Wiggins and McTighe present a fresh perspective that doesn't so much replace as reposition traditional approaches. It boils down to what they call backward design--or identifying learning outcomes and assessments before addressing fun activities or how to meet state standards. This means the fun activities, state standards, and building or district level lesson plan formats all work with their system--they just remind us all to figure out the purpose of a lesson before committing the "twin sins" of merely entertaining the students or covering the material.

Editorial Review:

*Winner of a 1999 EdPress Distinguished Achievement Award! *What is understanding and how does it differ from knowing? What do we want students to understand and be able to do? What enduring knowledge is worth understanding? How will we know that students truly understand and can apply knowledge in a meaningful way? How can we design our courses and units to emphasize understanding and "uncoverage" rather than "coverage"? Understanding by Design explores these questions and provides practical solutions for the teacher-designer. The book opens by analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to coverage and activity-oriented plans. Though backward from habit, this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction. The text proposes a multifaceted approach, with the six "facets" of understanding. The facets combine with backward design to provide a powerful, practical framework for designing curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

This book is the best! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When I read this book it was hard to put it down! From Kenny who is very talented for his age to Byron(By)who tries to act all cool to their little sister Joetta(Joey)who is very different for a young child things are very crazy sometimes. Their dad,Daniel, acts like a clown when he knows people are watching him. He is from Flint the town they now live in. Their mom,Wilona,is a very calm person when she wants to be and sometimes she is kind of a drama queen. She is originally from Birmingham. When they all go to Birmingham they listen to music on their recently bought record player and take adventures!
If you decide to get this book I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Editorial Review:

Enter the hilarious world of ten-year-old Kenny and his family, the Weird Watsons of Flint, Michigan. There's Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, Kenny, and Byron, Kenny's older brother, who, at thirteen, is an "official juvenile delinquent."

When Momma and Dad decide it's time for a visit to Grandma, Dad comes home with the amazing Ultra-Glide, and the Watsons set out on a trip like no other. Heading South, they're going to Birmingham, Alabama, and toward one of the darkest moments in America's history.

By turns comic, tragic, and touching, this remarkable Newbery Honor work, delightfully performed by LeVar Burton in this unabridged production, will delight listeners young and old as they meet Christopher Paul Curtis, a storyteller of bold ambition and a true and original voice and his inimitable Watsons.

Disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After having read about Brain Gym in other books, I rather expected a little something more. What I got was a very thin book of limited scope and poor illustrations

Should have bought a diffrent edition 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this because I read that Brain Gym was good for kids with special needs. Never having seen it done or used any other Brain Gym products- I naturally ordered the TEACHERS EDITION, thinking all the directions would be there for implementing this is my classroom. This manual would be for someone already familiar with the basics of Brain Gym exercises who wanted to find creative ways to use it within a classroom setting. I will be looking for Brain Gym products that meet my needs better.

Not up to standard! 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Although the content is very interesting, the quality of the graphics, typesetting and production is terrible! The illustrations are all line drawings by an amateur, and poorly illustrate the movements and postures described in the text. If the publishers didn't have a monopoly on the content, they simply couldn't get away with such a low standard. Considering the premium price point for this slender tome, one should expect a higher standard.

Editorial Review:

Brain Gym is made up of simple and enjoyable movements and activities . These activities make all types of learning easier but are especially effective with academic skills.
