Good resource with some disappointing elements 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I am surprised other reviewers have not mentioned inaccuracies and errors in this book. For example, in the first story Mary Rose refers to the Arawak Indians as both the Arawak and the Arawaks. I consider this a big error considering the passage is only a few paragraphs long. The second story on the Pilgrims contains inaccuracies and many of the points she chooses do not support her thesis that parents are strict. Requiring children to stand at the dinner table is an example of parental strictness. Other examples were not at all related to strictness but instead to conditions of poverty.

The text is also fraught with typographical errors, some of which could be very confusing to a beginning reader. E.g. :"Then he returned home and happily at his dinner" (p. 32). Obviously this should read "ate" his dinner.

Additionally, many stories are overpunctuated. Some stories even have a double exclamation point in the title (e.g. Bananas!!).

Slang (improperly used at that) is another troubling element... a story on astronauts' water sources warns "Don't gross out!"

There are some inaccurate explanations. Rose's explanation of the use of italics is misleading. She italicizes words of foreign origin the first story. This use is correct, but her explanation of the use of italics does not correspond to the way she uses it.

There are positive aspects to this book, however. It clearly states the objectives for each section and has good questions to go with the passages. I also appreciated how the author related the content of the book to standardized assessments.

Editorial Review:

Can a once-a-week homework activity really boost reading fluency and comprehension? Yes! One-page reading passages, a couple of quick comprehension activities, and a parentOs signature are all you need to ensure success. Developed by a leading teacher,

A Real Winner for Teachers Dedicated to Self-Improvement 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book, for the reflective teacher, is a tremendous tool to help guide teachers toward constructing meaningful lessons that promote real learning. The book provides solid strategies to support teachers in their efforts to go beyond "covering" material to teaching content for learning in ways that are both measurable and meaningful.

This is a real "teacher's handbook."

Great Read 4 out of 5 stars.

Excellent read for people in the educational field. Wonderful strategies and techniques to use in the classroom.

Barely literate 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is the sort of book that makes one despair of education academics. It is barely literate, most of its points are obvious, and it has little that will help you in the classroom. I'd recommend Frames of Mind or even Rookie Teaching for Dummies over this book.

Eat it or leave it 2 out of 5 stars.

If you chewed on this book it might be more inspiring than it is as a read. Wow! You mean that encouraging students, giving them homework, and having them reflect on their lessons actually has beneficial effects? I'm shocked! It's a good thing that these notions are presented with lots of proof from academic studies with lots of scientific graphs, or I would never believe them. Sheesh. Of course there are some good suggestions but they are not presented very well, so unless you can relate to some of the ideas already they probably won't leave much of an impression on you. There has to be better books out there.

Editorial Review:

From one of America’s most celebrated educators, an inspiring guide to transforming every child’s education

In a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and drugs, there is an exceptional classroom known as Room 56. The fifth graders inside are first-generation immigrants who live in poverty and speak English as a second language. They also play Vivaldi, perform Shakespeare, score in the top 1 percent on standardized tests, and go on to attend Ivy League universities. Rafe Esquith is the teacher responsible for these accomplishments.

From the man whom The New York Times calls “a genius and a saint” comes a revelatory program for educating today’s youth. In Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire!, Rafe Esquith reveals the techniques that have made him one of the most acclaimed educators of our time. The two mottoes in Esquith’s classroom are “Be Nice, Work Hard,” and “There Are No Shortcuts.” His students voluntarily come to school at 6:30 in the morning and work until 5:00 in the afternoon. They learn to handle money responsibly, tackle algebra, and travel the country to study history. They pair Hamlet with rock and roll, and read the American classics. Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire! is a brilliant and inspiring road map for parents, teachers, and anyone who cares about the future success of our nation’s children. BACKCOVER: Praise for Rafe Esquith:

“Rafe Esquith is my only hero.”
—Sir Ian McKellan

“Politicians, burbling over how to educate the underclass, would do well to stop by Rafe Esquith’s fifth grade class as it mounts its annual Shakespeare play. Sound like a grind? Listen to the peals of laughter bouncing off the classroom walls.”
—Time

“Esquith is a modern-day Thoreau, preaching the value of good work, honest self-reflection, and the courage to go one’s own way.”
—Newsday

Excellent source of material!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Cracking the CBEST" book is an excellent source of material. It explains in great detail how to solve the problems of reading, mathematics, and writing. Though the methods of cracking the problems are simple, it gave me confidence that under stress of test taking I can succeed because the solutions do not bombard you with over explanations. Everything is simply laid out and I felt that I didn't have to guess for the answers because the solutions teaches you how to approach each problem. I felt confident taking the two tests at the end of the book and even scored better on the second test! For someone who suffers from test anxiety, I feel confident taking the CBEST test next week because now I have the tools and the positive attitude to follow through. And that's no easy task for me! I say buy this book because you will not regret it.

Editorial Review:

If It's on the CBEST, It's in This Book
We don't try to teach you everything there is to know about mathematics, reading, and writing –only the techniques you'll need to score higher on the CBEST. There's a big difference. In Cracking the CBEST, we'll teach you how to think like the test writers and

·Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
·Prepare for the new challenges of the revised CBEST
·Raise your score by mastering the critical analysis and evaluation area of the reading section
·Ace the math section by knowing what to expect

This book includes 2 full-length practice CBEST exams. All of our practice questions are just like the ones you’ll see on the actual CBEST, and we fully explain every solution.

Trustworthy Text! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Shelley Harwayne's recommendation for this outstanding resource says it all in her first line. Harwayne states that Mentor Texts is "a trustworthy book". It truly is. Lynne Dorfman and Rose Cappelli have crafted a remarkable resource for teachers, parents and writers. Every school district should order multiple copies for their staff development departments and hand it out to veteran and beginning teachers.

One of the primary reasons this book works so well is that Dorfman and Cappelli are in classrooms living what they write about - this is a real difference-maker in a teacher resource book.

The thrust of this book is using real literature as mentor texts for writers. Dorfman and Cappelli write that mentor texts are books that are filled with possibilities for writers to learn from and that they can become "as comfortable as a worn pair of jeans". This book will, no doubt, become as tattered and worn and comfortable as a worn pair of jeans for me as I teach writers of all ages. However, just like I buy multiple pairs of jeans that I know fit well, I plan to buy multiple copies and keep them on my bookshelf.

Buy this book if you write, teach teachers, teach writers or even if you are an editor.

I can't wait for their next book, Non-fiction Mentor texts!

Bravo!

Practice with PURPOSE 5 out of 5 stars.

This is just what I've needed. Excellent source for getting kids motivated and on tasks that help THEM to learn. Outlines possible problems and solutions ahead of time. Great ideas for taking centers I already want and making them real learning stations in the classroom.

Other teachers on my floor are already looking to "borrow" it.

Great 5 out of 5 stars.

This was an excellent resource! With our school getting ready to teach combination grades-I will highly recommend it to all teachers. The ideas are practical and with a limited budget, will be attainable in our classes.
Finally- a book to help right away, simple ideas that we can all use!

Patrice Third grade teacher 5 out of 5 stars.

When I received the book, I sat down and read it through and through. This book is exactly what I need for my third grade class. The concept of practice centers for intermediate students makes sense. Debbie Diller's book
gave me the written "how" and provided the blackline masters to put those ideas into practice. I just completed my first week of school and I have already used several of her ideas. This book is easy to read, understand, and most importantly practical.

Fun for the whole family 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this so we would spend some quality time at the table and boy did it work.My husband works alot of hours and is so used to eating and jumping up from the table. These cards really go all of us talking and the kids have been eating more and not bouncing around at the table.Even my 2yr old likes to listen to our answers and has been much more behaved at dinner!

Great family conversation tool 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

We were looking for a way to increase our family communication during dinner and to allow each child in the family to have equal "floor time" for their comments. The cards contain great topics, are creative, and enhance spontaneous discussion. Great buy!

Editorial Review:

A grouping of stars is called a "constellation." Constellations are our oldest picture books. People who studied the stars at night long ago connected them with imaginary lines. These lines made shapes that looked like animals and people. Famous constellations include "Leo the Lion" and the "Big Dipper." Have you ever seen a picture formed by some stars? What was it? Could you find it again?

Editorial Review:

Since its publication in 1998 Craft Lessons has become a mainstay of writing teachers, both new and experienced. Readers value the pithy, practical lessons each printed on one page and appreciate the instructional language geared to three grade-level groupings: K 2, 3 4, and 5 8.
In the decade since Craft Lessons' publication the world has changed in many ways, yet one thing has remained constant: teachers continue to feel starved for time. With new curriculum mandates, daily specials, pull-outs, and precious time devoted to test preparation, the situation has never been worse, and the need for a succinct resource like Craft Lessons has never been greater.
The features that made Craft Lessons so valuable have been augmented. This edition includes:
* Seventeen brand new craft lessons; many based on veteran teachers' observations about typical student writing.
* Revisions to other craft lessons: model texts that have gone out of print have been replaced with current titles, and the resource materials sections have been expanded.
* New thinking about teaching elements of craft and the reading-writing connection.
*Two new indexes: a handy subject index to make it easier to find specific craft lessons, and an index that shows how these craft lessons can be integrated into Ralph and JoAnn's curriculum resource on the qualities of writing Ideas, Design, Language, and Presentation.
The 95 lessons in this book provide a wealth of information for teaching leads, character, endings, stronger verbs, and much more. This new edition reestablishes Craft Lessons as the crucial desert island book for harried writing teachers everywhere.

Basic knowledge for a first year teacher 3 out of 5 stars.

Good information for first year teachers, but if you have taught for a while it is definitely just a review of everything that you already have experienced and know.

Editorial Review:

In Tools for Teaching, Dr. Jones describes the skills by which exceptional teachers make the classroom a place of success and enjoyment for both themselves and their students. Tools for Teaching integrates the management of discipline, instruction and motivation into a system that allows you to reduce the stress of teaching by preventing most management headaches. Dr. Jones helps you reduce student disruptions, backtalk, helpless handraising and dawdling while helping you increase responsible behavior, motivation and independent learning. These skills are made accessable by practical, down-to-earth language and many examples and illustrations that provide the next best thing to attending one of Dr. Jones' workshops. The second edition also includes an Overview DVD of Dr. Jones entire program; including how to use the Study Group Acitivity Guide, workshops, and parent videos.
